    Notes: The low-temperature oxidation chemistry of linear and branched alkanes is discussed with the aim of unifying their complex behavior in various experimental systems using a single detailed kinetic model. New experimental data, obtained in a pressurized flow reactor, as well as in batch- and jet-stirred reactors, are useful for a better definition of the region of cool flames and negative temperature coefficient (NTC) for pure hydrocarbons from propane up to isooctane. Thermochemical oscillations and the NTC region of the reaction rate of the low-temperature oxidation of n-heptane and isooctane in a jet-stirred flow reactor are reproduced quite well by the model, not only in a qualitative way but in terms of the experimental frequencies and intensities of cool flames. Very good agreement is also observed for fuel conversion and intermediate-species formation. Irrespective of the experimental system, the same critical reaction steps always control these phenomena. The results contribute to the definition of a limited set of fundamental kinetic parameters that should be easily extended to model heavier alkanes.

    Description: A new forward-swept rotor designed by Allison Engine Company was tested in NASA Lewis Research Center's CE-18 facility. This testing was a follow-on project sponsored by NASA Lewis to study range enhancements in small turbomachinery. The test was conducted against a baseline rotor design that was also tested in CE-18. The design point for the rotor was a rotor pressure ratio of 2.69, a mass flow of 10.52 lbm/sec, and an adiabatic efficiency of 89.1 percent. Test data indicate that the rotor met the pressure ratio of 2.69 with a 10.77 lbm/sec flow rate, a 87.5-percent adiabatic efficiency, and a 19.5-percent stall margin. The baseline rotor achieved a pressure ratio of 2.69 at a 10.77 lbm/sec flow rate with a stall margin of only 9.2 percent and an adiabatic efficiency of 87.0 percent. The major differences are the significant stall margin increase and the substantially higher off-design peak efficiencies of the forward-swept rotor. The substantially higher performance over the baseline rotor design makes the new design a viable technology candidate for future products.

    Description: A new metthodology for interactive design of turbomachinery blades is presented. Software implementation of the meth- ods provides a user interface that is intuitive to aero-designers while operating with standardized geometric forms. The primary contribution is that blade sections may be defined with respect to general surfaces of revolution which may be defined to represent the path of fluid flow through the turbomachine. The completed blade design is represented as a non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) surface and is written to a standard IGES file which is portable to most design, analysis, and manufacturing applications.
