    Notes: Abstract The morphology of cold-drawn, rolled and annealed high-density polyethylene was investigated by transmission electron microscopy of stained sections. From the electron micrographs, a model of the structure was developed and the scattering pattern calculated. This was then compared with the corresponding small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) pattern, in order both to aid in the interpretation of SAXS patterns of oriented polymers, and to assess the effects of staining with chlorosulphonic acid on the morphology.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die mikrofibrillare und lamellare Morphologie in kaltverstreckten bzw. kaltverstreckten und anschließend getemperten HD-Polyäthylenplatten wurden mittels Raster-Elektronenmikroskopie untersucht. Kontrastunterschiede an Bruchoberflächen im Falle kaltverstreckten Polyäthylens werden interpretiert durch eine, vom Verstreckmechanismus bedingte, bevorzugte Orientierung der inter-mikrofibrillaren tie-Moleküle in der Plattenebene. An kaltverstreckten/getemperten Platten wurden Lamellenstapel beobachtet, die eine Zwillingsorientierung von geneigten Lamellen aufwiesen. Diese ‚dachförmige’ Struktur wird erzeugt durch eine Scherung innerhalb der Mikrofibrillen während der Mikro-Halsbildung und deutet das bekannte 4-Punkt-Röntgen-Kleiriwinkelbeugungsdiagramm. Zur Auflösung der einzelnen, lamellaren Textur wurde eine leichte Ätzung mit rauchender Salpetersäure benötigt.
    Notes: Summary The microfibrillar and lamellar morphologies in cold-drawn and cold-drawn/annealed high-density polyethylene sheets were observed by means of scanning electron microscopy. Differences in contrast on fracture surfaces for cold-drawn sheet are interpreted in terms of a preferential orientation of inter-microfibrillar tie molecules in the plane of the sheet brought about by the drawing mechanism. In annealed, cold-drawn sheet, stacks of lamellae were observed which showed twinned orientations of inclined lamellae. This “roof-top” structure is interpreted in terms of shear within the individual microfibrils during micronecking, and corresponds to the well-known 4-point small-angle X-ray pattern for this type of specimen. Light etching with fuming nitric acid was necessary in order to resolve the individual lamellar texture.

    Description: Extensive testing done on a T55-L-712 turboshaft engine compressor in a compressor test rig is being followed by engine tests in progress as part of the Army Non-Recoverable Stall Program. Goals include a greater understanding of the gas turbine engine start cycle and compressor/engine operation in the regions 'beyond' the normal compressor stall line (rotating stall/surge). Rig steady state instrumentation consisted of 497 steady state pressure sensors and 153 temperature sensors. Engine instrumentation was placed in similar radial/axial locations and consists of 122 steady state pressure sensors and 65 temperature sensors. High response rig instrumentation consisted of 34 wall static pressure transducers. Rig and engine high response pressure transducers were located in the same axial/radial/circumferential locations in front of the first three stages. Additional engine high response instrumentation was placed in mach probes in front of the engine and on the compressor hub. This instrumentation allows for the generation of detailed stage characteristics, overall compressor mapping, and detailed analysis of dynamic compressor events.

    Description: This paper describes the implementation and evaluation of a yaw rate to throttle feedback system designed to replace a damaged rudder. It can act as a Dutch roll damper and as a means to facilitate pilot input for crosswind landings. Enhanced propulsion control modes were implemented to increase responsiveness and thrust level of the engine, which impact flight dynamics and performance. Piloted evaluations were performed to determine the capability of the engines to substitute for the rudder function under emergency conditions. The results showed that this type of implementation is beneficial, but the engines' capability to replace the rudder is limited.

    Description: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has developed independent airframe and engine models that have been integrated into a single real-time aircraft simulation for piloted evaluation of propulsion control algorithms. In order to have confidence in the results of these evaluations, the integrated simulation must be validated to demonstrate that its behavior is realistic and that it meets the appropriate Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification requirements for aircraft. The paper describes the test procedures and results, demonstrating that the integrated simulation generally meets the FAA requirements and is thus a valid testbed for evaluation of propulsion control modes.

    Description: The engine control system for civil transport aircraft imposes operational limits on the propulsion system to ensure compliance with safety standards. However, during certain emergency situations, aircraft survivability may benefit from engine performance beyond its normal limits despite the increased risk of failure. Accordingly, control modes were developed to improve the maximum thrust output and responsiveness of a generic high-bypass turbofan engine. The algorithms were designed such that the enhanced performance would always constitute an elevation in failure risk to a consistent predefined likelihood. This paper presents an application of these risk-based control modes to a combined engine/aircraft model. Through computer and piloted simulation tests, the aim is to present a notional implementation of these modes, evaluate their effects on a generic airframe, and demonstrate their usefulness during emergency flight situations. Results show that minimal control effort is required to compensate for the changes in flight dynamics due to control mode activation. The benefits gained from enhanced engine performance for various runway incursion scenarios are investigated. Finally, the control modes are shown to protect against potential instabilities during propulsion-only flight where all aircraft control surfaces are inoperable.

    Description: This paper describes a model-predictive automatic recovery system for aircraft on the verge of a loss-of-control situation. The system determines when it must intervene to prevent an imminent accident, resulting from a poor approach. It estimates the altitude loss that would result from a go-around maneuver at the current flight condition. If the loss is projected to violate a minimum altitude threshold, the maneuver is automatically triggered. The system deactivates to allow landing once several criteria are met. Piloted flight simulator evaluation showed the system to provide effective envelope protection during extremely unsafe landing attempts. The results demonstrate how flight and propulsion control can be integrated to recover control of the vehicle automatically and prevent a potential catastrophe.
