Beschreibung: The non-asteroidal brightening of (2060) Chiron, first noted by Tholen in 1988 is now ascribed to cometary activity. Photometry since 1988 has revealed a broad surge in brightness that peaked in 1989 about 1.0 mag above the brightness in the mid-1980s. The surge is evidently due to sporatic formation of dust coma, which is itself driven by the presence of extremely volatile ices at or near the surface. CN emission was recently reported. Since Chiron is now nearing perihelion, there is interest in determining whether it has exhibited anomalous brightening in the past, particularly at greater heliocentric distances. Photographic plates dating back to 1895 are known to contain images of Chiron. Using some of these archival material, the initial results are presented for a project to determine Chiron's brightness history over orbital timescales. A particularly homogeneous and high-quality set of plates taken prior to and around the time of Chiron's discovery in Oct. 1977 at the 1.2 m Oschin Schmidt telescope at Mt. Palomar Observatory were examined. Images of Chiron were identified and digitized using a PDS microdensitometer, and images of field stars around Chiron were both similarly digitized and photometrically calibrated using recently acquired B and V band CCD frames. As a result of the present work, eleven new data, including estimated errors, were added between 1969 and 1977. The implications that Chiron can be active at any heliocentric distance in its present orbit suggest that the active volatile is either N2, CH4, or CO, and that a substantial degree of mantling may have developed. Further historical data is presented, the error bars discussed, and possible mechanisms suggested for the observed activity.

Beschreibung: The spectral characterization of small asteroids is important for understanding the evolution of their compositional and mineralogical properties. We report the results of a CCD spectroscopic survey of small main-belt asteroids which we call the Small Main-belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey (SMASS). Spectra of 316 asteroids were obtained, with wavelength coverage ranging from 4000 to 10000 A (0.4 to 1 micrometers). More than half of the objects in our survey have diameters less than 20 km. Survey results include the identification of the first object resembling ordinary chondrite meteorites among the main-belt asteroids (Binzel, R. P., et al, 1993) and observations of more than 20 asteroids showing basaltic achondrite spectral absorption features that strongly link Vesta as the parent body for the basaltic achondrite meteorites (Binzel, R. P., and S. Xu 1993). A potential Mars-crossing asteroid analog to ordinary chondrite meteorites (H chondrites), 2078 Nanking, is reported here. Through a principal component analysis, we have assigned classifications to the members of our sample. The majority of the small main-belt asteroids belong to S and C classes, similar to large asteroids. Our analysis shows that two new classes are justified which we label as J and O. Small asteroids display more diversity in spectral absorption features than the larger ones, which may indicate a greater variation of compositions in the small asteroid population. We found a few candidates for olivine-rich asteroids within the S class. Although the total number of olivine-rich candidates is relatively small, we present evidence suggesting that such objects are more prevalent at smaller sizes.

Beschreibung: The Small Main-Belt Asteroid Lightcurve Survey is the first to measure main-belt asteroid lightcurve properties for bodies with diameters smaller than 5 km. Attention is given to CCD lightcurves for 32 small main-belt asteroids. The objects of this sample have a mean rotational frequency which is faster than that of larger main-belt asteroids. All lightcurves were investigated for nonperiodic variations ascribable to free precession; no conclusive detection of this phenomenon has been made, however.

Beschreibung: The detection of CN emission the spectrum of (2060) Chiron not only underscores its cometary nature, but represents, at a heliocentric distance in excess of 11 AU, the most distantly detected instance of a cometary gas species. These observations are noted to be consistent with a driving of Chiron's outgassing by isolated outbursts of CO2 from a small fraction of Chiron's surface. If dusty particles or icy grains are dragged out by the gas with unit dust-to-gas mass ratio, outbursts need occur only once every several months. Such small-surface outgassings appear to characterize comets which have made many passages close to the sun.

Beschreibung: Production rates of OH, CN, C2, C3, NH, and NH2 were derived from different data sets for the Comet P/Wolf-Harrington, and a dust production measure was calculated. This comet is found to be depleted by more than an order of magnitude in its pure carbon species compared with OH and CN. The data obtained suggest that a nonnegligible fraction of comets or their constituent components formed at a different temperature and thus at a different location and/or time than the majority of comets.

Beschreibung: Periodic variations in Comet Halley's production of gas and dust during its 1910 apparition were searched for using measurements from a homogeneous set of photographic plates obtained at the National Observatory of Argentina at Cordoba. After applying corrections to the observations to compensate for geometric and heliocentric distance effects, the data, spanning the two months immediately following perihelion, were split into two sections for analysis. Of the possible periods indicated in either half of the dataset, only those in the range of 7.3-7.8 days were present in both halves. The additional constraint of similarity in the shape of the resulting, phased light curves further constrained the period from about 7.35 to 7.60 days. Allowing for the inherent limitations of the 1910 data, comparison of these light curves to the equivalent 1986 light curve indicates that a match in features between the two apparitions is made possible by utilizng one of two phase shifts. While not conclusive, this ability to match features suggests long-term stability in many aspects of Halley's intrinsic activity.

Beschreibung: Because of their short dynamical lifetimes, the population of near-earth asteroids (NEAs) must be resupplied. Two sources have been hypothesized: main-belt asteroids and extinct comet nuclei. A new survey of physical properties for less than 5 kilometers diameter main-belt asteroids reveals that their spin rate and shape distributions are similar to those of NEAs, as is fully consistent with a main-belt origin for most NEAs. Physical data on comet nuclei are limited. If the existing sample is representative of the comet population, analysis of the asteroid and comet samples constrains the fraction of comet nuclei to between 0 and 40 percent of the total NEA population.
