Notes: SV40 large T oncoprotein-transformed murine mesenchymal 3T3 T stem cells (CSV3 cells) can be induced to growth arrest and then differentiate into adipocytes. When differentiation occurs, SV40 T oncoprotein expression is repressed (Estervig et al., J Virol 63:2713, 1989). To determine if repression of T oncoprotein expression can also be induced pharmacologically, the effect of a variety of agents that have been reported to effect differentiation in various cell types but not in 3T3 T or CSV3 cells was tested. This rationale suggests that if any of these agents repress T oncoprotein expression in CSV3 cells, then the results would establish that repression of T oncoprotein expression can be mediated by mechanisms independent of overt differentiation. The results show that dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) is the only agent tested that represses T oncoprotein expression in CSV3 cells. Repression occurs in a dosage-dependent manner within 24-96 hours after exposure to DMSO. The effect of DMSO on T oncoprotein expression is mediated by posttranslational mechanisms that decrease the stability of the T oncoprotein. DMSO-induced repression of T oncoprotein expression is also associated with reversion of the transformed phenotype in CSV3 cells as demonstrated by the loss of responsiveness to a specific transformation-associated mitogen. These data support the conclusion that the pharmacological repression of T oncoprotein expression represents a form of cancer suppressor activity that can be mediated by a distinct molecular mechanism. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Description: This proposal has been concerned with methods for constructing geomagnetic field models that incorporate physical constraints on the secular variation. The principle goal that has been accomplished is the development of flexible algorithms designed to test whether the frozen flux approximation is adequate to describe the available geomagnetic data and their secular variation throughout this century. These have been applied to geomagnetic data from both the early and middle part of this century and convincingly demonstrate that there is no need to invoke violations of the frozen flux hypothesis in order to satisfy the available geomagnetic data.

Description: Attention is given to UV images of a 40-arcmin field in the northeast part of the Cygnus Loop made by the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) during the Astro-1 mission in December 1990. The longest FUV (B5) exposure is compared with ground-based and X-ray observations and with models. It is inferred from SNR shock models that C IV 1550 A dominates for more typical conditions in SNRs, and IUE spectra exhibit a strong correlation between C IV 1550-A flux and UIT B5 flux. The B5 image resembles images in forbidden O III 5007 A, but to the east of the edge of the forbidden O III filaments there is a faint C IV emission, consistent with nonradiative shocked material behind the SNR blast wave. Conditions in shocked gases that lead to C IV emission are similar to those that produce forbidden O III. Hence the ratio of the B5 and forbidden O III intensities can be used to map the optical depths of the sheetlike regions that emit the C IV resonance line.

Description: An algorithm is developed for constructing plausible field models satisfying the frozen-flux hypothesis of Roberts and Scott (1965), which supposes that, for short time intervals, diffusion can be neglected. The algorithm is based on a new parameterization of the field in terms of its radial component B(r) at the core-mantle boundary (CMB). The model consists of values of B(r) at a finite set of points on the CMB, together with a rule for interpolating the values to other points. The parameterization of the B(r) is used to construct field models satisfying the frozen-flux hypothesis for the epochs 1945.5 and 1980.

Description: The paper presents new ground-based and IUE spectrophotometry of several positions in NGC 6164-5 surrounding the Population I Of star HD 148937. Electron temperatures, densities, and abundances are derived for the various positions in the nebula using spectral line information. For all of the regions observed, Ne/H is depleted by an amount comparable to O/H, while S/H and Ar/H have normal values. The results suggest that the nebula consists partly of material ejected from inner shell-burning regions of the Of star. In effect, HD 148937 is older and more advanced than what was previously thought.
