    Description: A guide to the expected characteristics of the space telescope (ST) observatory is presented. The general objectives of the ST observatory are summarized. The plans for the development of the observatory are described with a brief history of the scientific activities; an account of the scope of the present program; a summary of the major responsibilities of the contractors; and a list of the project milestones are included. The performance characteristics of the observatory are provided including the imaging and stray light characteristics, pointing capability, and operational access. The expected performance characteristics of all six of the first generation science instruments are summarized. The mode of operations is described which includes a discussion of program options, guide star selection, methods of acquisition, and quick look data capabilities.

    Description: The Space Telescope is an international astronomical observatory which will be placed into a low earth orbit in December 1983. The observatory will provide astronomers the opportunity to use five different instruments (wide field/planetary camera, faint object camera, high-resolution spectrograph, faint-object spectrograph, and high speed photometer), and to do astrometry with the use of the fine guidance sensors used primarily for pointing control. These instruments, the spectral range available above the earth's atmosphere, and the spatial resolution available from the combination of a near-diffraction limited 94-in. primary mirror and the stability provided by the Pointing Control System provide a tremendous potential to the astronomical community.

    Description: An attempt is made to understand the physical and kinematic conditions in the M16 active star formation site, by means of mapping observations of neutral and ionized hydrogen and observations of (C-12)O from selected positions within the H II regions. The 21-cm maps suggest that at least two neutral clouds are present in the M16 complex, one of which is likely to be the remains of the cloud in which star formation initially occurred, and the other is probably the cold gas remaining from a disrupted cloud edge where the ionization front has crossed the cloud-intercloud boundary. Multislit echelle spectra of the H-alpha line are obtained to determine the physical conditions within the ionized gas, and H-alpha maps show that the ionized gas is systematically blueshifted in the east and splits into two streams in the southwest.

    Description: A method of post-development intensification of photographic images using a newly developed autoradiographic procedure is described. Radioactive Thiourea-S35 is combined with silver in the developed emulsion, which is then contact printed with a receiver emulsion. The beta decay from S35 produces an enhanced autoradiographic image. The laboratory technique is described and results of astronomical applications are presented.

    Description: The astronomer's capacity for observation will be tremendously enhanced by NASA's Space Telescope, a multipurpose optical telescope in earth orbit which will enable man to gaze seven times farther into space than has now been done, possibly to the outer edges of the universe. The Space Telescope is to be placed in orbit in 1983 by the NASA Space Shuttle. The turbulence of the earth atmosphere imposes practical limitations in all but a very few types of astronomical observations conducted on the surface of the earth. The Space Telescope, high above the hazy and turbulent atmosphere, will enable scientists to see the heavens clearly for the first time. The Space Telescope is a superb system that fully exploits the advantages of space observations and will dramatically extend the astronomer's capabilities beyond ground-based telescopes.

    Description: The Space Telescope, still under construction, is discussed in light of the constraints imposed on ground-based telescopes. The history of the Space Telescope is traced from its conceptual origin to its actual construction, and design considerations used to determine the Space Telescope construction are described. The optical system of the telescope will have an aperture of 2.4 m, a focal ratio of 24, and a front of primary to focus of 1.5 m. The fine guidance system will use astigmatic images at the edge of the field of view to provide the guidance signal for maintaining stability to 0.007 arcseconds. The guidestars are required for 85% of random fields located at the galactic poles, and the system sensitivity must meet performance specifications for stars brighter than 13.5 magnitude. The scientific instruments - the wide field camera, the faint object camera, the faint object spectrograph, the high resolution spectrograph, the high speed photometer, and the fine guidance sensors - are discussed in detail. Finally, the operations system, including schedule contraints and the Science Institute, is presented.

    Description: The advantages of an orbiting astronomical observatory are discussed. The principal consequence of having the telescope in space is that more light will be concentrated in the images, which has two effects: (1) the ability to view more accurately complex sources, and (2) the ability to detect and measure extremely faint point sources. The fact that higher resolution will reveal complex and unexpected detail is demonstrated by comparing a well-known astronomical scene with an image artifically degraded. Five scientific functions are envisaged for the Space Telescope. The first flight will feature performance of four of these functions with these four pieces of equipment: the f24 field camera, the faint object spectrograph, the infrared photometer, and the faint object camera. Astrometry will be done not by any specialized scientific instrument but with the fine guidance and pointing system.
