Notes: Summary The free-living stages of Steinernema kraussei (Rhabditida), an endoparasite of Cephalcia abietis L. (Hymenoptera), are exposed to different soil conditions when searching for host nymphs. Field studies and laboratory experiments showed that soil acidity plays a major role in the nematode's ability to parasitize Cephalcia nymphs. Under field conditions in Picea abies forests positive correlations between soil pH and both nematode density and insects parasitized were found. Acidic soil with pH levels below 4.0 may limit the nematode's host-finding. Controlled experiments in the laboratory under different pH conditions confirmed these correlations.

Notes: Abstract For a period of approximately six months the concentrations of airborne microorganisms were determined by the uptake of their day-characteristic at local places differing by the extent of air pollution. By simultaneously recording the meteorological parameters as temperature, relative humidity, direction and velocity of wind and intensity of solar radiation, it was intended to find out the relationship between these factors and the viability of airborne microorganisms. The present data show an oscillation of the concentration counts over a wide range and seem not yet to depend on the local situation of air pollution. In a further series of experiments the atmospheric aerosol 〈10 μm was collected on ‘air-filters’. The decreased substances were extracted from the filter material by aqueous and organic solutants and tested for their antimicrobial activities. In this context the seasonal dependence of the microbicidal activity of organic compounds of aerosol is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear and magnetic structures of an annealed polycrystalline sample of the heavy-fermion compound CePd2Al3 prepared by arc-melting were investigated by neutron powder diffraction. The chemical structure corresponds well to the ordered hexagonal PrNi2Al3-type structure. The antiferromagnetic structure of CePd2Al3 with an ordered magnetic momentμ Ce=0.47(2)μ B at saturation is remarkably similar to that in the heavy fermion superconductor UPd2Al3. The additional incommensurate magnetic structures reported previously both for UPd2Al3 and CePd2Al3 are not observed in the present sample of CePd2Al3. At 1.4 K the magnetoresistivity of CePd2Al3 measured up to 14 T indicates only one field-induced phase transition at 3.0 T.

Notes: Preventive and constructional measures against gas and dust explosions. Even during the planning of plant for processing potentially explosive products, process and constructional aspects should be accompanied by investigations on the products conducted with a view to obtaining as complete a picture as possible of the danger of explosion of the materials. These studies provide the basis for estimates of explosive risks in the plant and for decisions concerning the extent to which safety measures against the occurrence of explosions or the effects of explosions can be implemented. An explosion-proof plant can be accomplished by preventive measures hindering an explosion, or by constructional measures suppressing the effects of an explosion. This paper is intended to be of assistance in the choice of explosion-proofing equipment.

Notes: Thermally stimulated and isothermal depolarization currents of three low-density polyethylenes are investigated in the temperature range 80-320°K. The thermally stimulated current spectra can be analyzed in terms of a continuous relaxation time spectrum. This spectrum can be resolved into three Gaussian distributions of activation energies centered near 140°K (γ-relaxation), 205°K, and 245°K (β-relaxation) in agreement with electrical and mechanical loss factor measurements. The experimental observation are explained in terms of reorienting dipoles, coupling the molecular motion to the electrical field.

Notes: The Fröhlich model of discrete reorienting dipoles has been extended to include a continuous spectrum of relaxation times and applied to the measurement of thermally stimulated and isothermal depolarization currents of low-density polyethylenes. The experiments can only be interpreted if the detailed history of polarization and depolarization prior to the actual current measurements are taken into consideration. With certain simplification the spectrum of activation energies can be directly derived from the complete thermally stimulated current profile.
