    Notes: Soap film flows provide a very convenient laboratory model for studies of two-dimensional (2-D) hydrodynamics including turbulence. For a gravity-driven soap film channel with a grid of equally spaced cylinders inserted in the flow, we have measured the simultaneous velocity and thickness fields in the irregular flow downstream from the cylinders. The velocity field is determined by a modified digital particle image velocimetry method and the thickness from the light scattered by the particles in the film. From these measurements, we compute the decay of mean energy, enstrophy, and thickness fluctuations with downstream distance, and the structure functions of velocity, vorticity, thickness fluctuation, and vorticity flux. From these quantities we determine the microscale Reynolds number of the flow Rλ(approximate)100 and the integral and dissipation scales of 2D turbulence. We also obtain quantitative measures of the degree to which our flow can be considered incompressible and isotropic as a function of downstream distance. We find coarsening of characteristic spatial scales, qualitative correspondence of the decay of energy and enstrophy with the Batchelor model, scaling of energy in k space consistent with the k−3 spectrum of the Kraichnan–Batchelor enstrophy-scaling picture, and power-law scalings of the structure functions of velocity, vorticity, vorticity flux, and thickness. These results are compared with models of 2-D turbulence and with numerical simulations. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this article we describe a new technique, optical fiber velocimetry (OFV), to instantaneously measure two components of velocity at a point in freely suspended flowing liquid films. The technique relies on the measurement of displacements of an optical fiber tip which is coupled to the flowing film. The deflection of the fiber tip is proportional to the velocity and it behaves as a simple harmonic oscillator. Thus the low frequency response of the fiber gives direct measurements of the flow velocity. A statistical test using data acquired simultaneously by the fiber and by a laser Doppler velocimeter shows good agreement between the two techniques. Velocity power spectra measured in the wake of a von Karman street and in two-dimensional (2D) grid turbulence using the OFV also compare favorably with the laser Doppler velocimeter. The OFV technique is simple and robust, allowing it to be used in a wide variety of flows that have strong 2D characteristics. New prospects of using multiple fibers to measure circulation and velocity correlations at several separated spatial points are discussed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The menhadens Brevoortia gunteri and B. patronus are sympatric and morphologically similar. The two species are planktophagous and exhibited significant (P 〈 0·0001) food resource partitioning, with phytoplankton predominating in B. patronus stomachs and zooplankton in B. gunteri. The branchial apparatus of both species is of the typical alosine form. Brevoortia patronus has significantly more branchiospinules per mm (x̄=19·47) and significantly longer gill rakers (x̄=13·35 mm) than B. gunteri (x̄=14·11, x̄=12·01 mm respectively). B. patronus is characterized by a gill raker system forming a fine-meshed filter capable of retaining smaller food items. The results support the hypothesis that food resource partitioning is related to different morphological features of the branchial apparatus.

    Notes: A study was conducted to investigate red crab Pleuroncodes planipes (Stimpson) as a protein source in experimental diets for postlarvae and juvenile brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus californiensis (Holmes). Four experimental diets were prepared. The base diet contained 10% shrimp meal, 25% fish meal and 27% soy meal plus other ingredients. Complete substitution of shrimp meal with red crab meal (RCM) was done on the remaining diets. Additionally, 5% of the soy meal was replaced with RCM in one diet, and 4% of the fish meal was replaced with RCM in the last diet. A commercial diet (36% crude protein) was used as an external comparison diet to provide a basis to evaluate the growth of shrimp on the test diets. The trial with shrimp postlarvae showed that diets containing RCM produced better results in terms of final weight (3.24–3.55 g), growth rate (0.044–0.046 g d−1) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) (3.7–3.8) than the base or the commercial comparison diets. The FCR was significantly different between the base diet (4.5) and the commercial diet (5.5). Final weight (3.83 g) and growth rate (0.044 g d−1) were higher when the diet replacing 4% fish meal was used to feed juveniles. The commercial diet produced the lowest values of final weight (2.57 g) and growth rate (0.025 g d−1) and the highest FCR (5.6) (P〈0.05). These results indicate that the use of P. planipes as a replacement for traditional ingredients in shrimp rations is desirable.

    Notes: Spatial, seasonal and diel distribution patterns were analysed over a 2-year period for Diapterus auratus and Eucinostomus melanopterus in Pueblo Viejo lagoon, a tropical coastal lagoon in Veracruz, Mexico. A total of 216 samples were collected with 329 individuals of D. auratus and 170 of E. melanopterus. Diapterus auratus individuals were captured throughout a wider range of environmental conditions, and consequently its spatial niche breadth was significantly greater (P 〈 0.001) than that of E. melanopterus. In general, more individuals were captured at localities with submerged vegetation (Ruppia maritima), with 70% for D. auratus and 87.2% for E. melanopterus, although only the latter species showed significant spatial differences. A spatial segregation influenced by distance from the lagoon inlet and salinity was observed between the species. It is considered that this segregation may allow resource partitioning and minimize interspecific competition. A relatively low niche overlap (4.9%) was observed for the two species. Seasonal capture peaks of D. auratus were related to rainfall and the productivity pattern in the lagoon system. Seasonal fluctuations in monthly mean number of D. auratus were correlated with preceding variations in local rainfall (r = 0.86, P 〈 0.02). Moreover, seasonal capture peaks of D. auratus coincided with ecosystem primary production peaks. Although E. melanopterus exhibited no significant seasonal differences, its maximum numbers also coincided with an ecosystem primary production peak and recruitment patterns. In 24-h cycle analysis, both species were captured mainly around mid-day, with minor peaks at dawn and/or at dusk. Generally, few individuals were collected during hours of darkness. It was proposed that diel abundance variation of gerreids might be related to both light penetration in the water column and feeding activity. Food availability within Pueblo Viejo lagoon appears to be an important factor influencing fish abundance.
