Notes: The mass spectra of twenty-six commercially available medicinal phenothiazines have been determined at high resolution. In each compound, the side chain attached to the 10-position of the phenothiazine ring contains nitrogen and fission of the C—C bond α to this nitrogen gives in most cases the base peak. Some of the compounds are also substituted at the 2-position and this substituent generally remains intact, though some substituents such as acetyl, propionyl, methoxyl and methylthio can undergo fragmentation. Fragmentations fall into three groups; those which give ions representing a part of the side chain; those which give ions representing the intact phenothiazine ring with part of the side chain attached; those which give ions representing a partially fragmented ring system.

Notes: Evidence is adduced from steric effects on relative intensities that the [YC6H6N]+ ions from substituted acetanilides have the aniline structure.

Notes: We examine the influence of high-energy radiation and subsequent aging and orientation on the degree of crystallinity of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) films. In particular, PVDF films were exposed to electron beam radiation (doses up to 50 Mrad) and aged at room temperature for varying lengths of time followed by uniaxial orientation. The degree of crystallinity of these films was found to increase significantly with increasing radiation dose. In addition, a further substantial increase in the degree of crystallinity was observed upon subsequent aging of irradiated films at room temperature. Upon orientation, in addition to a further rise in the degree of crystallinity, the crystallites were observed to undergo the α form → β form transformation, the latter phase being the polar phase effective for piezo-electric/pyroelectric activity.

Notes: The low energy mass spectra of N-benzylacetamide have been recorded. The major fragmentations of the molecular ion are similar to those observed in the acetanilide spectrum. In addition, the secondary dissociation of the [C6H5CH2NH]+ ion by loss of HCN is shown to occur with transfer of the -N-H hydrogen to the ring.

Notes: The kinetic shifts for an ion decomposition involving loss of CH2CO from a series of substituted acetanilide ions have been calculated using the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus theory. The results indicate that in the main the observed changes in appearance potential-ionisation potential for this reaction are due to a change in the number of degrees of freedom on introducing the substituent and not due to a substituent effect on the critical energy of reaction.

Notes: The mass spectrum of thiacyclobutane at 70 eV has been calculated using quasi-equilibrium theory and an energy distribution given by f(E)= βE exp (- E2γ). The measured and calculated spectra are shown to be in reasonable agreement.

Notes: The mass spectra of a series of meta- and para-substituted phenyl acetates have been examined. Substituent effects have been correlated with Δ (AP-IP) values and by using the Harrison and Chin approach. The bond-cleavage and rearrangement reactions of phenyl accetates are compared with the corresponding reactions of acetanilides and the differences attributed to the degree of transmission of polar effects in the two systems.
