Notes: Abstract The degenerate four-wave mixing experiments have been performed in the dichloromethane solutions of 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-pipridine-4-ol-N-oxyl p-hydroxybenzaldehyde oxime benzoic ester (TPOHBOBE) and bis-(TPOHBOBE) cobalt (II), respectively. The result is in agreement with the theoretical prediction of γ depending on the molecular chain length l as l 5. A large off-resonant third order hyperpolarizability γxxxx of 1.3 × 10−30 esu for bis-(TPOHBOBE) cobalt (II) was obtained. The corresponding value of the third order nonlinear optical susceptibility χ(3) xxxx for its solid state is estimated to be 7.8 × 10−9 esu.

Notes: Abstract. Single-film bipolar electrets of porous polytetrafluoroethylene are generated by means of a two-step corona-charging process at elevated temperatures. Quasi-static direct piezoelectric coefficients of up to 0.15 nC/N have been observed on these films. In addition, multiple-layer stacks of porous and non-porous polytetrafluoroethylene films with monopolar charge were also investigated. While the piezoelectric responses of the stacks were not as high as those of the single films, the multiple-film arrangements may have other advantages such as better electrical shielding or tunable mechanical properties and adjustable acoustical impedance. Our new results are discussed in the context of the emerging field of porous polymer electrets with many potential device applications.

Notes: Summary Acid soils having high levels of aluminium (Al) can drastically reduce yields in alfalfa and the most economically viable solution to the problem appears to be the development of Al-tolerant cultivars. To assist with the choice of a breeding method, a six-parent alfalfa diallel (crosses and reciprocals included but not parents) was evaluated in Al-toxic nutrient solution in terms of height (HT) and dry weight (DW). General combining ability was significant for both traits and constituted the majority of the genetic variation. Specific combining ability was significant only for HT and reciprocal effects were significant only for DW. Tolerance appeared to be at least partially dominant to sensitivity. Results indicate that a mass selection scheme, such as recurrent phenotypic selection, may be effective in increasing levels of tolerance in at least some alfalfa populations and that minor grains may also be achieved through exploiting non-additive genetic variation.

Notes: Abstract The paper studies the effects of a rapidly changed temperature on the free vibrations of simply supported sandwich plates. It has been taken into account that the properties of the facings and of the core of the sandwich plate change with the temperature. The effects of geometrical nonlinearities on the behaviour of the plate have also been included. The damping is considered by modelling the viscoelastic core as a Voigt-Kelvin solid. A Runge-Kutta method is employed to solve the governing equations and obtain the numerical results. It was found that the rapid change of temperature strongly affects the amplitude and frequency of the vibrations.

Notes: Abstract The nonlinear, forced, damped vibrations of simply-supported rectangular sandwich plates with a viscoelastic core are studied. The general, nonlinear dynamic equations of asymmetrical sandwich plates are derived using the virtual work principle. Damping is taken into account by modelling the viscoelastic core as a Voigt-Kelvin solid. The harmonic balance method is employed for solving the equations of motion. The influence of the thickness of the layers and material properties on the nonlinear response of the plates is studied.

Notes: Summary A new stress rate, based on the spin of a material triad that coincides momentarily with the principal stress axes, is applied to the analysis of constrained and unconstrained shear with and without superposed normal stresses of hypoelastic and rigid plastic, kinematically hardening solids. A comparative study of various alternative stress rates that have been proposed, including the Jaumann rate, favours the new formulation from the viewpoints of qualitative behaviour, general applicability and ease of implementation. In particular, the present rate is the only one which furnishes a limiting value for tan β (β being inclination of a vertical fall of a material cube) in unconstrained shear with and without normal stresses.

Notes: Summary It is known from Lighthill's exact solution of the incompressible inverse problem that in the inverse design problem the surface pressure distribution and the free stream speed cannot both be prescribed independently. This implies the existence of a constraint (regularity condition) on the prescribed pressure distribution. The same constraint exists at compressible speeds. In this paper, an inverse design method for transonic airfoil is presented. In the method, the target pressure distribution contains a free parameter that is adjusted during the computation to satisfy the regularity condition derived in this paper. A few design results are presented here in order to demonstrate the capability of the method.

Notes: Abstract Because Medicago ruthenica [(L.) Ledebour] is a potential new forage legume, we collected 90 accessions in Inner Mongolia in 1991. The 40 accessions evaluated in this study (E2) trace to 13 collection sites ranging from 40° 40′ (N) × 111° 15′ (E) to 42° 55′ (N) × 122° 20′ (E) and to altitudes ranging from 175 to 1493 m. Nineteen of these accessions were collected from new or under-represented sites in generally milder and drier climates (temperate desert steppes), compared to the 50 accessions evaluated earlier (E1). All accessions were evaluated at Beltsville, MD (USA) on a B and K deficient Iuka sandy loam (coarse-loamy, siliceous, acid, thermic, Aquic Udigluvent; pH 6.4) in two-year studies. Significant variation was noted in E1 and E2 for dry matter yield, growth habit, leaf shape, and plant height and width. Upright growth habit and leaf narrowness, and procumbency and yield were positively correlated in both evaluations, but no particular leaf shape or growth habit was correlated with tolerance to winter conditions. In E2, leaf:stem ratios of four M. ruthenica accessions and a cultivated alfalfa (M. sativa L.) check were not significantly different, but M. ruthenica was significantly more tolerant of potato leafhopper (Empoasca fabae Harris) feeding than was M. sativa. Second-year alfalfa dry matter yield was about five times larger than that of M. ruthenica. Many of the highest yielding accessions were collected near cultivated fields and/or buildings. Although data for both evaluations demonstrated the same basic trends, there were sufficient deviations to emphasize the value of evaluating the entire germplasm collection.
