Notes: Abstract Samples having the nominal composition of Ca3SrAl6SO16 were sintered at 1380 °C and analysed by electron diffraction. The frequent appearances of forbidden and satellite reflections in this compound imply the presence of a number of basal and nonbasal superlattices so that the microstructure of this cement clinker was characterized by various superstructures including one-, two- and even three-dimensional superstructures along the 〈0 0 1〉, 〈1 1 0〉, 〈1 1 2〉, 〈1 1 4〉 or 〈2 2 1〉, 〈0 1 3〉 and 〈1 2 3〉 directions with repeat periods of two or three times of that of basic one, respectively, and intergrowth of these. Various domain structures with 90°, 120° and 48.2°, etc., orientation relationships were also detected in these superstructures and the total number of these orientation variants related to the symmetry elements lost in the process of phase transformation, can be predicted according to the conclusions of Van Tendeloo and Amerlinckx, or they are equal to the number of those unique planes in the matrix.

Notes: Abstract Five criteria for evaluating the whisker microstructure have been suggested, which include (1) proportion of “perfect” single crystals, (2) morphology and growth direction, (3) length, diameter and ratio ofL/D, (4) the bulk and surface chemistries, (5) defects and their distribution. Three sets of commercially available SiC whiskers made in two countries and the TiN whiskers were characterized in terms of the above criteria.

Notes: Abstract The microstructures of unhydrated calcium aluminosulphate Ca4Al6SO16 and Ca3SrAl6SO16 have been studied by high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM). The results showed that twinning and twinned slabs could be introduced taking the [1 1 2] direction as the twin axis so that it seems to be coincident with the law of twinning formed in body-centred cubic structures. A previously reported superlattice with a repeat period twice that of the fundamental structure along the 〈1 1 0〉 direction has also been found in both matrix and twin variants. The close intergrowth of Ca3SrAl6SO16 and another phase, possibly Sr3Al2O6 existing as an inclusion between these two twin variants, was determined and clearly revealed by electron diffraction and HREM images. The coherent interphase boundaries and orientation relationship between them can also be deduced.

Notes: Abstract Several different kinds of domain structures formed during phase transformation have been observed by means of high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) in Ca4Al6S016. They are 〈110〉 90 ° and 120 ° orientation variants and 〈1 1 0〉 translation variants found in the superstructure. These orientation variants are related to the lost symmetries of matrix and the number of them can be predicted according to the Van Tendeloo's conclusion. In addition to these domain structures, the 〈1 1 0〉 180 ° rotation domain with the characteristic feature of non-stoichiometry and {1 1 0} general domain have also been revealed in the matrix. The {1 1 0} and {2 1 1} small angle grain boundaries were studied as well.

Notes: Abstract The structure of tetrahedrally close-packed phases (known also as Frank-Kasper phases) in superalloys has recently been extensively studied at the atomic level by high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) in the Laboratory of Atom Image of Solids, Academia Sinica. In addition to a magnitude of domain structures, no less than six new phases have been found. This is a resumé of the study. First, a brief description of the crystal structures of these phases is given to illustrate the capability of HREM in revealing the building of complex structures from simple structural units. Secondly, the crystallographic features of the new phases and microdomain structures are discussed. Finally, the principle of juxtaposition of parallel oriented coordination polyhedra in these tetrahedrally close-packed phases is presented and this not only explains the existing structures of such phases but may also be important in the study of the quasi-crystalline state in rapidly quenched amorphous alloys.

Notes: Abstract The microstructure of a synthetic ceramic with the nominal composition of MgSiO3 has been investigated by means of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Mistakes in stacking sequences, including an isolated fault and the coexistence of various stacking disorders resulting from the phase transition of high-temperature phase protoenstatite to room temperature phase clinoenstatite, have been determined. They consist of a sequential arrangement of the same kind of SiO3 tetrahedral chains with identical and opposite skews, respectively. These stacking faults possibly formed during the early stage of nucleation of clinoenstatite on cooling. As a result, the new polytypes with repeat periods of 1.35 and 2.25 nm, respectively, perpendicular to the (100) plane were introduced by varying the stacking sequences in clinoenstatite and orthoenstatite matrix.

Notes: Abstract The microstructure in rapidly solidified Al-Li-Cu-Mg-Zr alloys has been reexamined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that the weakening intermetallic phases, e.g. hexagonal, Z, face centred cubic (f.c.c), T, and tetragonal, H, (new phase) phases, exist in alloys with relatively high contents of Mg besides the strengthening phases. The sizes of these weakening intermetallic phases are on the scale of micrometres. The newly found tetragonal H phase, having parameters of a = 2.8 nm and c = 2.4 nm, was observed to coexist with the Z phase, and has a defined orientation relationship with the Z phase. High resolution images reveal that there are planar defects and 90 ° domains in the Z phase, multiple twins in the T phase, and two well defined crystallographic orientation relationships between the Z and T phases.

Notes: Abstract The interfacial reaction at the whisker–matrix interface in a K2O·6TiO2/6061Al composite was investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Magnesium segregation and titanium enrichment at the whisker–aluminium interface was revealed by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. It was shown that TiO and MgTi2O4 layers and MgAl2O4 particles were formed at the whisker–aluminium interfaces in the composite during the manufacturing of the composite. The thickening of the reaction layer after T6 treatment may result in the decrease of the bending strength of the composite. Specific orientation relationships between MgTi2O4 and TiO, and also between TiO and K2O·6TiO2 whiskers were also found.

Notes: Abstract High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images of stacking faults on (0 0 1) and (1 0 1) planes in a β-Si3N4 whisker were obtained and compared to image simulations. This procedure showed that the atomic structure of the four atomic planes around the (0 0 1) stacking fault plane in the β-phase is very similar to that of the unit cell of α-Si3N4 crystal. The stacking fault was observed to climb under electron irradiation in the microscope.
