    Notes: Abstract We have studied one family of Chinese origin, in which benign infantile convulsions and paroxysmal choreoathetosis (of the dystonic form) were co-inherited as a single autosomal dominant trait. This association is specific to ICCA syndrome, which we have recently described in four French families. Some patients in the new family also exhibit recurrence of epileptic seizures at a much later age, making the ICCA syndrome in this family atypical. DNA samples isolated from this family of 22 members (9 affected) have been tested with genetic markers at chromosome 16p12-q12, in which region the ICCA syndrome has previously been linked. Confirmation of linkage to this pericentromeric region of human chromosome 16 has been obtained and no critical meiotic recombination event has been detected in the ICCA region. This result suggests that, in contrast to marked clinical heterogeneity, the association of infantile convulsions with paroxysmal dyskinetic movements could be genetically homogeneous.

    Notes: Abstract Based upon the transition rate equation of dipoles in the membrane, we deal with two important aspects of interaction of nerve signals: (1) conditions for nerve excitation and (2) frequency spectrum analysis of nerve impulse. Interrelations between signal amplitudes and frequencies are formulated in detail. There are several important conclusions which can be drawn from our calculations. First, toexcite the nerve, low frequencies are generally more effective than high frequencies. Second, tosedate the nerve (i.e. to suppress undesired activities), high frequencies would suit better. Third, harmonics produced through interactions of nerve signals are not necessarily weaker than the fundamental frequencies. The great significance of our theory is that it indicates in principle the feasibility to alter or rewrite the information contents of a nerve message in our body by applying stimulations of appropriate strengths and frequencies. Thus, the theory provides a physical basis and hence some understanding for a new branch of medicine—neuro therapy such as Nogier's auriculotherapy, Lamy's phonophoresis, Voll's electroacupuncture and the fast rising TENS (transcutaneous electro-neuro stimulation).

    Notes: Abstract In the theory as presented in this paper and the following one, we shall attempt to apply the semiconductor principles and methods to the study of ion transport in thin lipid membranes. Detailed formulations are given on the potential energy barriers at the interfaces, voltage drops in the polar and non-polar regions, and potential and field distributions in the diffuse double layer and within a charged membrane. These results will be used mainly as the boundary conditions for the solution of ion flow as to be given in the following paper. The analysis clearly indicates that the ion transport is interface-limited and is profoundly influenced by the presence of surface charges. An explanation of Na+ extrusion in nerve membrane is given based on the field distribution analysis. The theory also suggests that the “membrane potential” depends mainly on surface charges but not necessarily on ion permeation through the membrane.

    Notes: Abstract From a quantum mechanical standpoint, electron tunneling may occur in a nerve axon because the nerve membrane (60 to 100 angstroms) is thin enough for the tunnel effect and because the external solution and the axoplasma are redox systems which can provide electrons. Calculations and diagrams of the density-of-states are given to predict theN-shaped current-voltage characteristics which have been observed in the studies of squid giant axons, of the reconstituted liquid membranes and of the marine algae.

    Notes: Abstract Following the theory of surface recombination in semiconductors, we have derived an expression for the rate of ion recombination at the membrane surface. The surface recombination rate is used in the boundary conditions of current flows at the interfaces. Expressions for the ion fluxes are then derived as functions of environmental variables and membrane parameters. Our analysis strongly suggests that the ion flow through a thin lipid membrane consists of two major components: the surface barrier jumping current and the surface recombination current that are controlled decisively by surface barrier height, surface trap density and surface recombination rates. These general formulations are useful not only for the calculation but also for the understanding of ion transport in thin lipid membranes under a variety of experimental conditions. The implications of this theory to biological membranes and its possible extensions are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The equation for the quantum transitions (spontaneous and stimulated) of membrane dipoles is solved for the various forms of time-varying stimulation in nerve. From the condition of ever-increasing dipole population in the upper state, the threshold for excitation is determined in each case. The results obtained are in agreement with the established facts. The optimum frequency for stimulation is given asv 0=0.0615/T 2 whereT 2 is the dipole relaxation time. The feature of the theory is that the mathematical formulation is based upon a physical mechanism and the results can thus provide some understanding in the observed phenomena.

    Notes: Abstract The expression of β-amylase genes in rice (Oryza sativa) and its regulation by phytohormones gibberellic acid (GA) and abscisic acid (ABA) were examined. Upon germination β-amylase is synthesizedde novo in aleurone cells and (GA) is not required. Exogenous addition of GA does not enhance the β-amylase activity, while ABA inhibits the β-amylase activity, mRNA accumulation, and the germination of rice seeds. GA can reverse ABA inhibition of β-amylase expression, but not ABA inhibition of seed germination. Such regulation represents a new interaction of ABA and GA.

    Notes: Abstract The stability problem of the disturbed algebraic Riccati equation of continuous linear time-invariant systems is discussed in this paper. Through matrix norm analysis the estimation (expressed in terms of the disturbance range of the system parameters) of the disturbance range in the solution of the disturbed algebraic Riccati equation is established. Apparently this method is quite convenient for the practical computational purposes.

The allowable disturbance ranges are given so that the maintenance of the Lyapunov stability and the Popov's hyperstability of a discrete linear system is guaranteed.
