Notes: Abstract The Fokker-Planck equation for a heavy particle in a dilute gas of light particles is derived from a Boltzmann equation. Inelastic collisions between the heavy and light particles are considered, and explicit quadratures for the frictional coefficients are given in terms of the scattering kernels. It is shown that the general formulation reduces properly to known results in the cases of pure elastic and pure diffuse scattering, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The time evolution of a model system for mixtures of sodium and potassium feldspars is investigated by computer simulations in order to determine what effects aluminum-silicon ordering may have on phase separation in these minerals. We assume that there is a greater energetic advantage for Al atoms to move onto preferred sites in the vicinity of Na atoms than in the vicinity of K atoms. This couples Al/Si ordering to the phase separation. We find that in such a system phase separation is slowed substantially compared to a system in which the two processes are not coupled.

Notes: Abstract The molecular theory of the Brownian motion of heavy particles in a homogeneous solvent of light particles is extended to cover the case of interactions between the Brownian particles. This will have physical effects in the concentration dependence of the Brownian particle self-diffusion coefficient. A density expansion for the Brownian particle friction coefficient is derived, and an approximation permitting the first density correction to be calculated is suggested.

Notes: Abstract An equation of evolution for a heavy particle immersed in a solvent of lighter particles is derived for the case when the system suffers gradients of temperature composition, or velocity. The derivation unifies the theory by applying the same methods which have proved useful in the uniform case. The final equation contains some new terms due to concentration gradients in the solvent, and is applicable to the case when the heavy particles are present at finite concentration and interact with each other.

Notes: Abstract The Langevin equations for a harmonically bound particle, where the force constant is a given function of time, is solved. The mean and mean-square properties of the solution are determined. The analysis is then specialized to the case of a force constant periodic in time. It is shown that the mean fluctuations remain bounded in time precisely when the mean motion is stable (remains bounded).

Notes: Abstract The equation of evolution governing the probability density of a pair of heavy particles in a fluid of lighter particles is derived. The derivation starts from the Liouville equation and proceeds by expansion in the ratio of light to heavy masses, using the technique previously applied successfully to the singlet distribution.

Notes: Abstract We study Taylor diffusion for the case when the diffusion transverse to the bulk motion is a persistent random walk on a one-dimensional lattice. This is mapped onto a Markovian walk where each lattice site has two internal states. For such a model we find the effective diffusion coefficient which depends on the rate of transition among internal states of the lattice. The Markovian limit is recovered in the limit of infinite rate of transitions among internal states; the initial conditions have no role in the leading-order time-dependent term of the effective dispersion, but a strong effect on the constant term. We derive a continuum limit of the problem presented and study the asymptotic behavior of such limit.
