Abstract Much research has been carried out on the origins of long grained rice, the cereal which is the staple of most of mankind, in the last few years. This article briefly summarises the botanical results and data from archaeological excavations in China, India and Thailand especially. There is no recent information on the origins of glutinous rice but botanical evidence points to a West African origin.
