Notes: Abstract In this paper we introduce a systematic approach for the modelling of complex biological systems which is especially useful for the analysis of signal transduction mechanisms in cell biology. It is shown that systems analysis in form of top-down levelled dataflow diagrams provides a powerful tool for the mathematical modelling of the system in terms of a stochastic formulation. Due to the exact formulation, the consistency of the model with the experimental results can be tested by means of a computer simulation. The method termed Structured Biological Modelling (SBM) is illustrated by modelling some aspects of the second messenger network which regulates cell proliferation. As an example for the strainghtforward development of a mathematical description a stochastic computer model for intracellular Ca2+ oscillations is presented.

Notes: Summary rps10, encoding the plastid ribosomal protein S10, is a nuclear gene in higher plants and green algae, and is missing from the large ribosomal protein gene cluster of chlorophyll b-type plastids that contains components of the prokaryotic S10, spc and alpha operons. The cyanelle genome of Cyanophora paradoxa is shown to harbor rps10 as another specific feature of its organization. However, this novel plastid gene is not contiguous with the genes of the “S10” operon, but is adjacent to, and cotranscribed with, the str operon, a trait also found in archaebacteria.

Notes: Summary Cholinesterase reactivators — trimedoxim, methoxim and obidoxim — injected in the dose of 20 mg/kg s.c., increase muscle glycogen concentration in normal, but not in adrenalectomized rats. This effect may be in connection with simoultaneously found rise of serum corticosteron level. Trimedoxim decreases adrenaline, methoxim and obidoxim noradrenaline concentration in adrenals.

Notes: Abstract The str operon containing the genes for the ribosomal proteins S12 (rps12) and S7 (rps7) and for the elongation factors G (fus) and Tu (tufA) has been characterized for some cyanobacteria and chloroplasts from algae and higher plants. In the case of plastids a stepwise reduction. by one and two genes, respectively, has been observed due to gene transfer to the nuclear genome. The nucleotide sequence of the str operon on the cyanelle genome from Cyanophora paradoxa was determined as a first example for a chlorophyll b-less plastid. It comprises rps12, rps7 and tufA which are closely linked and not interrupted by introns. Transcript analysis revealed cotranscription of the two ribosomal protein genes whereas tufA gave rise to a monocistronic mRNA. Phylogenetic studies using these three different traits allowed an assessment of the position of Cyanophora paradoxa among oxygenic photoautotrophs.

Notes: Abstract Standing crop, population size, and species diversity of the macrobenthic organisms in an estuarine channel were studied before and after dredging. A new suction-corer which sampled an area 0.1 m2 to a depth of 30 cm was used in order to insure the inclusion of large, deep-dwelling animals. Eleven months after dredging, biomass and number of species and specimens had not recovered to pre-dredging levels. Colonization began with relatively large, swiftly moving forms such as the errant polychaete Nereis succinea and the crab Neopanope texana sayi. Stations in silt and mud regions recovered more slowly than those in sandier sediments. Most of the dominant and subdominant species had not recovered 11 months after dredging, and the previously abundant polychaetes Notomastus latericeus and Clymenella torquata had virtually disappeared. Only relatively uncommon lamellibranchs such as Tellina agilis, Lyonsia hyalina and Mulinia lateralis increased after dredging. Distribution of sediment types changed as the result of modified tidal velocities in the channel. Mud and silt were removed by the dredge, exposing the sand underneath, and sandy stations became muddier as the result of lowered current velocities. Marked changes in species composition reflected this change in sediment character. Eleven months after dredging no evidence of succession was found, but colonization had begun. Values of all three parameters studied were reduced to small fractions of pre-dredging levels, although species diversity in sandy sediments exceeded pre-dredging levels.

Notes: Summary A method is described for the C/H determination with a completely titrimetric finish. Both carbon and hydrogen are converted to an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide, which is titrated in a non-aquous medium. The procedure can be applied for the analysis of substances separated by a gas Chromatograph. The determination takes about six minutes.

Notes: Abstract Water-soluble poly(acrylamide-allylamine) copolymers containing covalently bound amino groups, prepared by copolymerization of acrylamide and allylamine, can be used as general carriers for coupling of different types of saccharides or saccharide derivatives. The water-soluble macromolecular carbohydrate derivatives can be easily labelled and used in various solid-phase techniques to study protein-saccharide interaction. Two types of coupling reaction were used to prepare polyacrylamide derivatives of saccharides: reductive amination was applied to couple the reducing disaccharides and a carbodiimide reaction was used to couple heparin via its carboxyl groups to the amino groups of the poly(acrylamide-allylamine) derivative. Peroxidase labelled or biotinylated derivatives were shown to be useful in studies on the binding properties of lectins and proteins from boar seminal plasma.
