    Notes: Abstract: Constraints on the spin-averaged Λp scattering length and effective range have been obtained from measurements of the pp → pK+Λ reaction close to the production threshold by comparing model phase-space Dalitz plot occupations with experimental ones. The data fix well the position of the virtual bound state in the Λp system. Combining this with information from elastic Λp scattering measurements at slightly higher energies, together with the fact that the hyperdeuteron is not bound, leads to a new determination of the low energy Λp scattering parameters.

    Notes: Abstract. The magnetic structure and ordering temperatures of three intermetallic compounds which crystallize in the tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure, TbCr2Si2, HoCr2Si2 and ErCr2Si2, have been determined by neutron diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and magnetization measurements. The Cr-sublattice orders anti-ferromagnetically with Néel temperatures of 758 K for TbCr2Si2, 718 K for HoCr2Si2 and 692 K for ErCr2Si2. Chromium atoms located at 4d crystallographic sites are aligned anti-parallel along the c-axis, with G Z Cr magnetic modes. In contrast with metallic bcc Cr, the refined room temperature value of the ordered Cr moment is anomalously large for all three compounds. No long range magnetic order of the R sublattice in TbCr2Si2 and HoCr2Si2 is observed, whilst the Er sublattice in ErCr2Si2 orders independently of the Cr sublattice below 2.4 K with moments ferromagnetically aligned in the basal plane.

    Notes: Abstract: The magnetic structures of Mn1-xFexWO4 with x = 0.0, 0.16, 0.21, 0.225, 0.232, 0.24, 0.27, 0.29, and 1.0 were refined from neutron powder diffraction data. The magnetic phase diagram could be completed in the coexistence range of different magnetic structures up to x = 0.29. For the magnetic state at 1.5 K a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with a propagation vector = (±1/4, 1/2, 1/2) was found for x ⩽ 0.22 while the magnetic spins order with = (1/2, 0, 0) for x ≥ 0.22. In the latter phase, additionally, weak magnetic reflections indexed to an incommensurate ordering with = (- 0.214, 1/2, 0.457) occur in the diffraction pattern up to x = 0.29 indicating the occurence of a reentrant phase. For 0.12 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.29 the low temperature phases are separated from a magnetic high temperature phase showing only magnetic reflections indexed to a spin arrangement with = (1/2, 0, 0). The magnetic phase diagram is discussed qualitatively considering random superexchange between the statistically distributed Mn2+- and Fe2+-ions in the coexistence range 0.12 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.29 of different magnetic structures related to those of pure MnWO4 and FeWO4.

    Notes: Abstract: The element distributions and the magnetic ordering behaviour of compounds RNi10Si2 (R = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) have been studied by neutron powder diffraction down to temperatures of 1.6 K. The compounds crystallize in an ordered variant of the ThMn12 structure type in the tetragonal space group P4/nmm. An ordered 1:1 distribution of Ni and Si on sites 4d and 4e, respectively, corresponds to a modulation vector [0, 0, 1] with respect to the space group I4/mmm of the ThMn12 structure. TbNi10Si2 orders antiferromagnetically below T N = 4.5 K with a magnetic propagation vector of [0, 0, 1/2]. The magnetic Tb moments, 8.97(2) /Tb atom at 1.6 K, are aligned along the c-axis. The Ni sites in TbNi10Si2 do not carry any ordered magnetic moments. The compounds with R = Dy, Ho, Er, and Tm are paramagnetic down to 1.6 K and 3.0 K, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract. Phase properties of optical thin film interference filters are discussed from the aspect of their usage for phase-error free wavelength separation of broadband femtosecond laser pulses. It is shown that both transmissive or reflective interference filters with high contrast ratios exhibit high cubic phase shifts on transmission or reflection, respectively, causing intolerable distortion in the temporal pulse shape. We show, however, that high efficiency wavelength separation of broadband femtosecond laser pulses can be achieved by using low contrast, properly designed reflective optical interference filters directly built into the cavity of the broad spectrum, femtosecond pulse lasers or parametric oscillators. For demonstrative purposes, we implemented the idea for a Kerr-lens mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser, and obtained two-color, inherently synchronized, unchirped, femtosecond pulse outputs from a single laser oscillator.

    Notes: Abstract Goldfish are ideal vertebrates for the study of regeneration within the central nervous system. The present behavioural and neuroanatomical investigations after bilateral transection of the entire olfactory tracts of either lateral or medial subtracts have been designed (1) to examine the relationship between morphological changes and changes in the perception of spontaneously preferred chemosensory stimuli, (2) to investigate the animals' ability to qualitatively discriminate amino acids in olfactory concentrations (below taste threshold, 10-6–10-8 M), one of which had been rewarded preoperatively (“specific” regeneration), and (3) to examine the discriminative ability for amino acids at concentrations above taste threshold (〉 10-5 M) in intact sham-operated, and in operated specimens at various time intervals before functional regeneration. Within 10–14 days after bilateral transection of the lateral olfactory tracts, specific regeneration was observed. After bilateral transection of the medial olfactory tracts, no immediate behavioural change was recorded for 1 week. Thereafter, goldfish behaviour became unstable and dropped to the chance level for 3–4 weeks. Subsequent to this time the goldfish returned to the preoperative level. Following bilateral crushing of the olfactory tracts and after total tractotomy, a specific regeneration was observed after 4 weeks and 6–8 weeks, respectively, post op. HRP studies showed that after bilateral lesioning a qualitative reinnervation of the respective nuclei within the forebrain by the medial and lateral olfactory subtracts was evident.

    Notes: Abstract Multiunit activity and slow local field potentials show Omitted Stimulus Potentials (OSP) in the electrosensory system in rays (Platyrhinoidis triseriata, Urolophus halleri) after a missing stimulus in a 3 to 〉20 Hz train of μV pulses in the bath, at levels from the primary medullary nucleus to the telencephalon. A precursor can be seen in the afferent nerve. The OSP follows the due-time of the first omitted stimulus with a, usually, constant main peak latency, 30–50 ms in medullary dorsal nucleus, 60–100 ms in midbrain, 120–190 ms in telencephalon — as though the brain has an expectation specific to the interstimulus interval (ISI). The latency, form and components vary between nerve, medulla, mid-brain and forebrain. They include early fast waves, later slow waves and labile induced rhythms. Responsive loci are quite local. Besides ISI, which exerts a strong influence, many factors affect the OSP slightly, including train parameters and intensity, duration and polarity of the single stimulus pulses. Jitter of ISI does not reduce the OSP substantially, if the last interval equals the mean; the mean and the last interval have the main effect on both amplitude and latency. Taken together with our recent findings on visually evoked OSPs, we conclude that OSPs do not require higher brain levels or even the complexities of the retina. They appear in primary sensory nuclei and are then modified at midbrain and telencephalic levels. We propose that the initial processes are partly in the receptors and partly in the first central relay including a rapid increase of some depressing influence contributed by each stimulus. This influence comes to an ISI-specific equilibrium with the excitatory influence; withholding a stimulus and hence its depressing influence causes a rebound excitation with a specific latency.

    Notes: Summary In the present investigation we localized binding sites for the lectins WGA (wheat germ agglutinin), RCA I (Ricinus communis agglutinin), LFA (Limax flavus agglutinin) and SBA (soya bean agglutinin) in the 7-day-old mouse embryo at the ultrastructural level. Lectin binding sites were localized on formaldehyde fixed embryos, embedded in LR-Gold, using gold-labelled lectins. Binding sites for WGA and RCA I were observed at the surface of the embryonic ectoderm oriented towards the proamnion cavity and the outer surface of the extraembryonic and the embryonic endoderm. Staining for SBA and LFA binding sites was seen in the basement membrane of the ectoderm. Moreover, binding sites for LFA were observed in the nucleoli of cells of the ectodermal, the mesodermal and the endodermal layer and in free ribosomes located in the cytoplasm of these cells.

    Notes: Abstract  The differentiation of primitive epithelial precursor cells in the thymic primordium into subcapsular, cortical, and medullary epithelial cells of the mature thymus requires the activity of the nude gene product Whn. Whn is also required for proper keratinization of the hair shaft. We determined the nucleotide sequence of a 58 kilobase region on mouse chromosome 11 that encompasses the mouse nude gene and part of the two neighboring genes, encoding a sodium/dicarboxylate co-transporter and the retinal protein 4. Using cross-hybridization, the human orthologue of the mouse nude gene was isolated. The human WHN protein also consists of 648 amino acids, 85% of which are identical to the mouse protein. Like the mouse gene, the human gene consists of eight coding exons and utilizes two alternative first exons in a tissue-specific fashion. Sequences upstream of the two alternative first exons display promoter activity in heterologous reporter assays. Whereas both promoters appear to be active in skin (albeit at different levels), only the most upstream element is active in the thymus, indicating that transcriptional activity of the whn gene is subject to complex regulation. Nucleotide sequence database comparisons reveal that among other winged-helix genes, the HTLF and HTLFL1 genes are most closely related to whn, although the exon/intron structure of the human HTLF gene in the DNA binding domain differs from that of whn.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Bürzeldrüse derEnte wurde elektronenmikroskopisch untersucht. Zwei verschiedene Fettsubstanzen kommen in den Drüsenzellen vor. In den basalen Zellschichten liegen stark osmiophile undhomogene Fettpartikel von etwa 1,5μ Durchmesser. In den inneren Zellschichten und im Drüsenlumen kommen Fettkörperchen vor, die eine Lamellierung zeigen. Diese lamellierten Körperchen entstehen aus unscharfen 2μ großen Zelleinschlüssen. Bemerkenswert ist ferner das Auftreten von einzelnen Vakuolen in den mittleren Zellagen, deren Zahl zum Drüsenlumen hin in starkem Maße zunimmt, so daß die inneren Zellschichten wabenartig aussehen. Gleichzeitig verändern sich die übrigen Zellbestandteile in folgender Weise: Das Hyaloplasma wird dichter, wahrscheinlich durch Zusammendrängung der granulären Bauelemente. Die Mitochondrien verlieren ihre typische Innenstruktur und erscheinen deutlich plumper. Der Kern färbt sich weniger mit Osmiumsäure an. Die Zellgrenzen lassen sich schließlich nicht mehr darstellen. Im Drüsenlumen liegen die lamellierten Körperchen dicht gedrängt, stellenweise noch mit Cyotoplasmaresten durchsetzt. Die Fettentstehung in der Zelle, der Sekretionsmechanismus und der Sekretionstyp der Bürzeldrüse wird diskutiert.
