Description / Table of Contents: Summary In 1984 and 1985 three pairs of wild Kestrels breeding in nest boxes on buildings were watched 10 752 hours during the reproductive season by using an automatic registering system. Each flight of the Kestrels from or to the nest could be determined and timed by photographing a clock simultaneously. Miniature cameras and Super-8-films were used. Advantages and disadventages of the cameras and of the automatic registering system are discussed. During the reproductive season the pellets of adult and juvenile Kestrels accumulate in the nest. Therefore the contents of the nest could be used for analyzing quality and quantity of food. An appropriate method had to be developed. Pellets of Kestrels living in cages contained 16,7 % of the mice resp. voles and 8,7 % of the birds fed. A comparison between the samples of photographic registering at the nest boxes and the nest contents revealed that 16,3 % of the mice resp. voles and 8,5 % of the birds brought by the adults could be found in the latter. These figures are identical with those from the caged Kestrels. Using ascertained factors of correction composition and quantity of prey can be calculated by the nest contents after the fledgings have left the nest.

Notes: Abstract. The STAT transcription factors form a family of signal transducers and activators of transcription. We sequenced the bovine STAT5B cDNA and both STAT5-encoding genes, STAT5A and STAT5B, representing the first complete description of any STAT5-encoding gene. DNA fiber FISH hybridization revealed that the genes reside only 40 kbp apart on BTA19. Both genes are segmented into 19 exons and all but two of the homologous exons are of equal size. The genes harbor a central block of nearly identical DNA sequence (97.5% sequence identity over 3373 bp), spanning from intron 5 to intron 9. Isolation and sequencing of the homologous segments from mouse revealed the same unusually high degree of intronic sequence conservation in these segments of the murine STAT5-encoding genes. However, the respective sequences are completely divergent between the two species. A comparison of the inter- and intragenic cDNA sequence preservation at nonsynonymous sites reveals that the DNA-binding domain is under the strongest selection pressure for both intergenic and factor-specific intragenic sequence preservation. The so-called ``SH3'' segment of the linker domain, in contrast, shows species-specific sequence identity in all but one amino acid residues in both factors, in cattle, human, and mouse. This indicates that the same species-specific selection pressure occurs on the linker domain from both factors, STAT5A and STAT5B. Thus, the comparison of evolutionary selection pressures resting on various domains suggests that the DNA-binding domain might contribute to differential DNA binding of STAT5A and STAT5B factors, while both might interact equally well with other cellular factors through a segment of the linker domain.

Notes: Abstract 34 compounds containing the SO2-N-C-N-moiety are investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry to study problems of polymorphic species. There are arguments for different crystalline solids of 16 sulphonyl derivatives. The phenomenon of polymorphism can be discussed both in terms of different hydrogen bonding and conformational effects. Although two tautomers are thinkable for the compounds being investigated the sulphonylimino structure is assumed to yield the most stable state.

Notes: Abstract A total of 44, 40, 47, 51, and 58 barley samples for feed use were collected randomly after the 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, and 1992 crops, respectively, from farms located in an area of southwest Germany. The sum of precipitation from May to September was high in 1987 and markedly lower in 1989–1992. Deoxynivalenol, 3-. and 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol, nivalenol, fusarenon-X, T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin and diacetxyscirpenol were determined by gas chromatography with mass selective detection (GC-MS), zearalenone,α- and β-zearalenol by GC-MS or by HPLC. Deoxynivalenol was the major toxin with incidences at 71–98% and mean contents at 42–400 µg/kg. In contrast, incidences of zearalenone, 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol, nivalenol, HT-2 toxin, and T-2 toxin were at 7–68, 7–48, 11–41, 0–9, and 2–29%, respectively; with mean contents at 3–146 µg/kg. α- and β-zearalenol and diacetoxyscirpenol were not detected in any sample. 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol and fusarenon-X were assayed in samples from 1987, 1991 and 1992. 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol was detected in 30, 0 and 2% of samples, respectively, with an average content of positive samples at 8 and 4 µg/kg, fusarenon-X was not detected. Over the years, incidences and levels of toxins remained constant, decreased or increased. The correlation between the occurrence of toxins and level of precipitation is discussed.

Notes: Abstract A total of 237 commercially available samples of cereal-based foods including bread and related products, noodles, breakfast cereals, baby and infant foods, rice and other foods were randomly collected in southwest Germany during the first six months of 1998. The trichothecenes deoxynivalenol (DON), 3-and 15-acetyl-deoxynivalenol (3-,15-ADON), nivalenol (NIV), fusarenon-X (FUS-X), T-2 toxin (T-2) and HT-2 toxin (HT-2) were determined by gaschromatography/mass spectrometry following clean-up by a two stage solid-phase extraction. Detection limits ranged between 2 and 12 μg/kg. Based on all samples, the incidence of DON, HT-2, T-2, 3-ADON,15-ADON, and NIV was at 71, 18, 4, 4, 4 and 2%, respectively; the average contents in positive samples were at 103, 16, 14, 17, 24 and 109 μg/kg,respectively. Fus-X was not detected in any sample. A lower (P 〈 0.05) DON content was found in baby and infant foods as well as in cookies and cakes compared to bread. Overall, based on the incidence and level of all six toxins, the degree of contamination was lowest in baby and infant foods. Foods produced from either white or whole grain flour did not differ (P 〉 0.05) with regard to the incidence and level of DON. In foods produced from cereals of organic production both the incidence and median content of DON was lower compared to conventional production. Zearalenone, α- and β-zearalenol were determined by high performance liquid chromatography in 20 selected samples, mostly baby and infant foods. These toxins were not present in excess of the detection limit in any sample.

Notes: Abstract. Most of current neural network architectures are not suited to recognize a pattern at various displaced positions. This lack seems due to the prevailing neuron model which reduces a neuron's information transmission to its firing rate. With this information code, a neuronal assembly cannot distinguish between different combinations of its entities and therefore fails to represent the fine structure within a pattern. In our approach, the main idea of the correlation theory is accepted that spatial relationships in a pattern should be coded by temporal relations in the timing of action potentials. However, we do not assume that synchronized spikes are a sign for strong synapses between the neurons concerned. Instead, the synchronization of Synfire chains can be exploited to produce the relevant timing relationships between the neuronal signals. Therefore, we do not require fast synaptic plasticity to account for the precise timing of action potentials. In order to illustrate this claim, we propose a model for translation-invariant pattern recognition which does not depend on any changes in synaptic efficacies.
