Notes: Abstract The heat transfer problem relative to the modified chemical vapor deposition process has been analyzed and the effects of solid layer thickness, torch speed and tube rotation are studied. The quasi-steady three-dimensional energy equations have been solved for the temperature fields in the gas and the solid layer with a Gaussian heat flux boundary condition on the outer surface. Of particular interest is the effect of the solid layer thickness and the torch speed on inner surface temperature, gas temperature and thermophoretic velocity. The large change of the axial temperature distribution of the surface occurs for different solid layer thicknesses or torch speeds. The presence of the solid layer and tube rotation reduce the effects of nonuniform torch heating in the circumferential direction and the resulting surface temperatures are very uniform in this direction.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Instationärer Wärmeübergang, Strömungs- und Druckverlauf wurden in einem laminaren Naturkonvektionskreislauf untersucht.
Notes: Abstract The transient heat transfer, fluid flow and pressure in a natural circulation loop have been studied under laminar flow conditions. Most studies of these systems have utilized a onedimensional approach which requires a priori specifications of the friction and the heat-transfer coefficients. In the present work the variation of the friction and heat-transfer coefficients are determined. Detailed pressure, temperature and velocity distributions are presented.

Notes: Abstract Fluid temperature measurements are reported for a natural convection loop operating in the steady state regime. Averaged and fluctuating measurements were made for a toroidal thermosyphon oriented in the vertical plane that was heated over the lower half and cooled over the upper half. The measurements were made along the tube diameter at the entrance and exit of the heating sections for heat inputs from 1400 to 8410 w/m2. The amplitude of the temperature fluctuations exceeded 10 °C near the inner walls indicating the effects from recirculating flow regions at the entrances to the heating and cooling sections.

Notes: Abstract The heat transfer and fluid flow are determined for fully developed laminar flow in a vertical channel. The effects of natural and forced convection and thermal radiation are included in the analysis. The spectral variation of the radiation properties are included through the use of the total band absorptance. The analysis is general and specific numerical results have been obtained for the 15 micron band of carbon dioxide. A simplified approach for large path is also presented which is in excellent agreement with the more exact results.

Notes: Abstract A study of the effects of radiation on the heat transfer in fully developed turbulent flow in a channel is carried out. The analysis is valid for both small optical depths and for the optically thin limit. Nongrey effects are included through use of the total band absorptance.

Notes: Abstract The problem of energy transfer in a thermally developing, radiating and conducting medium is studied. In particular, laminar flow of carbon monoxide is considered although the results may be interpreted more generally as referring to any infra red radiating diatomic gas. The effects of radiation and conduction on the temperature profile and the Nusselt number are presented for slug flow and for the parabolic velocity distribution.

Notes: Abstract The mass transfer of oxygen to a rotating cone has been measured in a quiescent fluid. Cones with vertex angles of 19.2°, 30°, 60°, 90°, 120° and 180° (disks) were used in both laminar and turbulent flow at a Schmidt number of 400. The laminar flow mass transfer data is in agreement with an equation derived for cones at high Schmidt numbers. The turbulent flow mass transfer data for cones with vertex angles greater than 19.2° is in agreement with the high Schmidt number expression of Deissler. The 19.2° cone angle, however, results in experimental values for the mass transfer which are greater than the predicted values. Lastly, the values of the Reynolds number for transition from laminar to turbulent flow, as determined directly from the mass transfer data, are in agreement with previous results.
