Description / Table of Contents: Summary The notion of Productivity, although old, has taken a great importance these last years. Recent works, especially those written in English, have discussed this subject from three points of view: 1° Definition of the terms used (Mac Fadyen, 1948); 2° Analysis of the concept (Clarke, 1946; Pennak, 1946; Ricker, 1946); 3° Transcription of the concept in mathematical language (Clarke, 1946; Ricker, 1946, 1948). The notion of Productivity implies a detailed study of the environment; a good way to understand the biological transformation of the latter, is to cut it out in trophic levels. Simultaneously with the “material” study of the metabolic phenomena that take place in a given environment, it is necessary to consider the “energy” study of those phenomena, because Energy takes, from the point of view of Production, a more important part than Material. However, because of the difficulty of studying the transformation of Energy, most of the authors, especially biologists, prefer to discuss the problem using some limiting factors, which latter are considered to follow the technical facility of their research and of their analyses. The number of existing factors and the present state of our knowledge do not yet allow us to use the mathematical terms proposed in all circumstances; the latter, however, have been worked out, and might possible be of use for the workers in their choice of the Productivity criteria. In particular cases, these calculations will be compared with the observations based on statistics and others.

Notes: Abstract The study of 38 samples of aquatic fauna from Venezuela increased the number of known species here from 28 to 66. Fifteen new species for science are described. A list of Copepoda known from the other regions of South America is presented. From this list, it can be said that only 50% of the inland water Copepoda living actually in Venezuela are known.

Notes: Abstract Sixteen species of Copepoda were recorded in this first detailed study of Costa Rican zooplankton. Two of these species are halophile. Notes are given on some of the species and their distribution. One new species found will be described elsewhere. The Costa Rican fauna resembles in composition the fauna of other Central American and Caribbean regions. Relatively few species were recorded. This is partly due to a low intensity of sampling but also to the paucity of lentic habitats. The occurrence of two circumtropical species of Mesocyclops is interesting.

Notes: Abstract Studies on tropical freshwater zooplankton which commenced in the mid-19th century have been intensified during the past twenty years or so. The whole region, barring a few areas, has been investigated, including very recently tropical Australia. The widely scattered literature is briefly summarized with comments. Some general distributional patterns are emerging. There is a dearth of ecological studies especially on seasonality and production. Systematics lags behind the North Temperate zone in most tropical regions.

Notes: Abstract A revision of the list of Copepoda produced recently by Fernando (1980) was necessary to take in account the progress of knowledge in this field. 25 species were listed. Now, seven of them keep their name. Another one is placed in another genus. Seven mistakes were corrected. Two species are new for Science, Microcyclops elegans and Thermocyclops orientalis. Two varieties of already known species are also described. Eleven species are new for Sri Lanka. Three other, noted by Fernando (1980) do not seem to exist in Sri Lanka and four were not found again in the numerous samples studied.
