Synopsis A method for the histochemical identification of xanthine dehydrogenase, the terminal enzyme in the production of uric acid, has been developed. The presence of the enzyme in the liver, kidney, pancreas and intestine of the fowl was confirmed and its distribution in these organs demonstrated. Strong positive reactions were seen in hepatic cells, renal proximal convoluted tubules, pancreatic acinar cells, and epithelium of the small intestine. Weak reactions were detected in the ovarian follicle and the epithelium of the proventricular mucous membrane.
