    Notes: Three halobacteria strains (T5, T6, T7), growing optimally at a sodium chloride concentration of 3.5 M, were isolated from samples collected in the Tunisian marine saltern located close to Monastir. Although they were different in colony and cell morphology, the isolates were similar in most respects and all produced a homopolyester identified spectroscopically as polyhydroxybutyrate when grown on carbohydrates. Under the same conditions, the isolates formed acidic exopolysaccharides. Acid methanolysis of their complex lipids released archaeol (2,3-di-O-phytanyl-sn-glycerol). All the isolates had polar lipid patterns characteristic of representatives of the genus Haloarcula. Partial sequence analysis of 16S rRNA genes from strain T5 confirmed its assignment to the genus Haloarcula. Although strain T5 differed phenotypically from the species Haloarcula japonica in several respects, DNA–DNA hybridization indicated that the T5 isolate is a new strain of H. japonica.

    Notes: Abstract On Oct. 4th, 1983 the area of Phlegraean Fields, near Naples (Southern Italy) was shaked by an earthquake of magnitude (M L) 4.0 that caused some damage in the town of Pozzuoli and its surroundings. This seismic event was the largest one recorded during the recent (1982–84) inflation episode occurred in the Phlegraean volcanic area, and a detailed macroseismic reconstruction of the event was carried out. Failing macroseismic data on other earthquakes occurred in Phlegraean Fields, the attenuation law of the intensity as a function of the distance as obtained for the Oct. 4th earthquake was compared with those obtained for other volcanic areas in central Italy —i.e., Tolfa, Monte Amiata — in order to check the reliability of the results obtained for Phlegraean Fields. The Blake's model of the earthquake of Oct. 4th, 1983 does not agree with the experimental data because isoseismals contain areas larger than those shown by the model. This result has been interpreted as an effect of energy focusing due to a reflecting layer 6–8 km deep.

    Notes: Abstract A novel thermophilic Gram-positive bacillus, “Bacillus thermoantarcticus”, isolated from geothermal soil near the crater of Mount Melbourne, is described. The organism grows at an optimal temperature of 63°C at pH 6.0, is oxidase-positive, catalase-negative and produces an exopolysaccharide, an exocellular xylanase, an intracellular alcohol dehydrogenase and exo- and endocellularα-glucosidase(s). The sequence of 16S rDNA is very similar to that of “Bacillus thermoglucosidasius”; however, the guanine-plus-cytosine (G + C) content is 8 mol% higher. The type strain is “Bacillus thermoantarcticus” (DSM 9572).

    Notes: Summary Five isolates of thermophilic bacteria, capable of growing at 65°C, were obtained from samples of soil collected from the Cryptogam Ridge (Mount Melbourne) and in the area north of Edmonson Point, Northern Victoria Land, Antarctica. Electron microscopy, morphological and physiological properties, lipid analyses and GC content of the isolates are described in this paper. On the basis of the results presented the organisms belong to the eubacterial domain.

    Notes: Abstract We have designed and tested a 5×5 mm2 chip which includes 24 “island” Josephson tunnel junctions (STJs) with square, circular and diamond geometries, two arrays of 100 “island” junctions and other detection devices. The junctions were based on Nb-AlOx-Nb trilayers, obtained on Si substrate by a process consisting of underlayer Nb deposition, self-aligned insulation and anodization steps. The junction quality was extensively tested by measurements of the I–V characteristics down to T=1.2 K. IcRn values up to 2.16 mV have been obtained. Preliminary results concerning the response of these samples to 6 keV X-ray radiation are discussed. Effects of the substrate on the detector response have also been observed and reported. A rough estimation of the energy resolution gives about 700 eV. The quality of the junctions is such that the electronic noise is the predominant limitation to the ultimate resolution.

    Notes: Abstract: A new fabrication process for three-terminal superconducting devices consisting of two Josephson junctions in a stacked configuration is reported. The process is based on the deposition of the whole Nb/AlxOy/Nb-Al/AlxOy/Nb multilayer on a Si crystalline wafer without any vacuum breaking. Lift-off techniques, anodization processes and a SiO film deposition have been adopted for patterning and insulating the two tunnel stacked junctions. Devices have been characterized in terms of current-voltage (I-V) curves and Josephson critical current vs. the externally applied magnetic field. They show high quality factors (V m values up to 65 mV at 4.2 K), and good current uniformity.

    Notes: Abstract We present experiments on macroscopic quantum effects in Josephson junctions with different relevant junction parameters at a temperature well above the classical-quantum crossover temperature. This has been possible by extending the measurements on the escape rate out of the metastable state at higher sweeping frequency (dI/dt up to 100 A/sec.) in order to induce non-stationary conditions in the energy potential describing the junction dynamics. The non-stationary regime for the system allows a direct observation of energy level quantitation when the rate of change of the external energy, measured in terms of the level spacing, is fast with respect to the thermal transitions between levels.

    Notes: Abstract The behavior of a superconducting tunnel junction detector (STJ) in the regime of low excitation is described, and the characteristic times of the dynamical response are discussed. The effect of a proximity layer in the STJ is analyzed in terms of the McMillan model. A set of phenomenological equations for the proximized STJ driven out of equilibrium is obtained, showing the importance of the role of the proximity effect in the dynamics of the device.

    Notes: Abstract High-T c superconductors are intensively studied for applications such as biomagnetism, but the great difficulties in making integrated dc SQUIDs have slowed down applications in the biomedical field. Moreover, magnetic noise and energy resolution are not always low enough to permit measurements of human body magnetic signals. Noise in bicrystal and biepitaxial grain boundary junctions has been extensively analyzed, and both structures showed similar 1/f noise behaviors. In order to account for the experimental results, different models describing grain boundary junctions have been made, each able to explain some aspects of the phenomenology. In this work we suggest that the “barrier” is constituted by a large number of microscopic weak links in parallel, and we analyze the effects of such a model on noise properties and the temperature dependences of the critical current, finding a good agreement with most experiments carried out on grain boundary junctions.

    Notes: Abstract Eucalyptus grandis wood was biodegraded by eight basidiomycetes and two ascomycetes. Four groups of decayed wood samples were recognized based on the principal component analysis (PCA) of weight and component loss data. Among the 10 fungal species studied, no selective lignin biodegradation was achieved. PCA was very efficient in recognizing wood decay patterns and seems to be a useful tool to analyse large group of weight- and component-loss data.
