Notes: Abstract High-field13C-NMR of13C-enriched compounds in dilute aqueousd 6-Me2SO solutions provides a simple, accurate method for measuring pK as of sparingly soluble carboxylic acids. Using this method, we found the pK as of mesobilirubin-XIIIα to be 4.2 and 4.9, much lower values than reported recently for bilirubin, and of mesobiliverdin-XIIIα to be 3.9 and 5.3.

Notes: Abstract Neural Networks have recently been a matter of extensive research and popularity. Their application has increased considerably in areas in which we are presented with a large amount of data and we have to identify an underlying pattern. This paper will look at their application to stylometry. We believe that statistical methods of attributing authorship can be coupled effectively with neural networks to produce a very powerful classification tool. We illustrate this with an example of a famous case of disputed authorship, The Federalist Papers. Our method assigns the disputed papers to Madison, a result which is consistent with previous work on the subject.

Notes: Conclusions The samples which contained the highest amounts of PCT also contained the higher amounts of PCB, but the amounts of the latter were 1 to 2 orders of magnitude greater, possibly reflecting the relative usage of the polychlorinated materials. The relative amounts of the perchlorinated ortho-, meta- and para-isomers of terphenyl are of interest. Three peaks were detected on GLC; the identities of these, in order of increasing retention times, were assigned by DOGUCHI et al (1974) to the ortho-, para- and meta-isomers respectively. Their identity was confirmed during the present work by perchlorination of the respective terphenyl isomers. The ratios of the areas of the perchlorinated isomers in the standard preparation of PCT were ortho:para, 0.8 to 1 and meta:para, 1.4 to 1. With the exception of only one sample — a Barn Owl liver — the ratios for the sample extracts were all lower than those for the standard. DOGUCHI et al (1974) showed a similar result in their chromatogram of a Japanese human fat extract. This may be an indication that the ortho- and meta-isomers may be degraded more rapidly in the environment than the para-isomer; experiments showed that there was no change in the ratio of the isomers when the standard material was put through the complete method. It is hoped that further work with a wider variety of bird species may help to clarify the situation.

Notes: Summary Steady-state pharmacokinetic parameters of the new, long-acting beta-adrenoceptor blocker bopindolol have been measured in 17 young and 20 elderly healthy men. The t1/2β and the AUC(0→24 h) of hydrolysed bopindolol (the active metabolite) were both increased (40% and 26%, respectively) in the elderly subjects but tmax, Cmax and CL/f were not altered. However, after adjusting the parameters to allow for the different average body weights of the two groups, Cmax and CL/f became significantly different (+29% and −30%, respectively). AUC(0→24 h) was increased by 41%. The changes of up to 41% in pharmacokinetic parameters were smaller than the alterations of 50–100% usually seen when titrating doses of antihypertensive drugs. The clinical relevance of the effects was not examined, but similar changes have been reported for other beta-blockers which did not appear to be clinically relevant and did not affect the dosage required to treat hypertension.

Notes: Abstract New measurements of second sound attenuation in bulk flowing He II are reported which extend to a region of higher Reynolds number. An expression for the attenuation explicitly containing the quantum vortex line density is developed which allows comparison with vortex line density data taken by other means. A bellows driven experimental apparatus is used to produce bulk flow velocities of 0 to 1 m/sec in a channel of 4.064 mm square internal cross section. Second sound pulses are produced by applying a square voltage pulse 200 Μs width and variable height to a strain gauge heater. The second sound pulses are detected with thin film sensors mounted 56 and 119 mm downstream. The velocity-dependent attenuation, measured as a function of bulk flow velocity at 1.5, 1.8, and 2.0 K, is compared with data from other researchers. The attenuation, and thus the vortex line density, appears to follow a gradual transition from laminar to turbulent behavior. Current theories do not account for the presence of quantized vortices in bulk flowing He II, where (v n−v s), and thus do not explain the observed second sound attentuation in this regime.

Notes: Abstract The growth dynamics of GaAs, AlAs and (Al, Ga)As films grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on GaAs(110) and (111)A substrates have been studied using reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) intensity oscillations and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). In contrast to growth on (001) oriented substrates, the period of the RHEED intensity oscillation does not in general provide a measure of the growth rate. This is explained by the very different surface chemistry involved, since the short lifetime of arsenic molecules (As2 or As4) on non-(001) surfaces results in cation-stable surface conditions, which generate arsenic (anion)- induced intensity oscillations, whereas on (001) surfaces they are cationinduced under all normal growth conditions. The effects of this behaviour on surface morphology are illustrated, as are the relative influences of Ga and Al. STM images obtained during the first few monolayers of growth provide a detailed indication of the growth mode and in particular explain in a simple manner the origin of bilayer period RHEED intensity oscillations obtained during growth on GaAs (110).

Notes: Abstract Solving deterministic equivalent formulations of two-stage stochastic linear programs using interior point methods may be computationally difficult due to the need to factorize quite dense search direction matrices (e.g., AA T ). Several methods for improving the algorithmic efficiency of interior point algorithms by reducing the density of these matrices have been proposed in the literature. Reformulating the program decreases the effort required to find a search direction, but at the expense of increased problem size. Using transpose product formulations (e.g., A T A) works well but is highly problem dependent. Schur complements may require solutions with potentially near singular matrices. Explicit factorizations of the search direction matrices eliminate these problems while only requiring the solution to several small, independent linear systems. These systems may be distributed across multiple processors. Computational experience with these methods suggests that substantial performance improvements are possible with each method and that, generally, explicit factorizations require the least computational effort.

Notes: Abstract Many microorganisms have an inherent capacity to degrade the toxic organic compounds that enter the environment as a result of pollution and natural activities. Significant degradation of these compounds may take many years and it is frequently necessary to consider methods that can accelerate this process. There have been several demonstrations of enhanced biological degradation of toxic wastes, both in the laboratory and under field conditions. The prospects for enhanced biological cyanide degradation are reviewed. Compared with bench-scale processes, there are very few reports of field-scale processes for cyanide bioremediation. The implementation of such field-scale degradation requires inputs from biology, hydrology, geology, chemistry and civil engineering. A conceptual framework is emerging that can be adapted to develop new processes for bioremediation of toxic organic wastes. In terms of cyanide biodegradation, this framework incorporates identification of microbes, determination of the optimal conditions for degradation, establishment of the metabolic pathways involved in cyanide degradation, identification and localization of the genes involved, identification of suitable microbial strains for practical application and development of practical engineering processes. The present review addresses the progress that has been made in each of these aspects of cyanide biodegradation. It also examines the existing field applications of biological cyanide degradation and makes recommendations for future research.
