Notes: Abstract In recent years considerable interest has been shown in impurity-induced compositional disordering of III–V compound semiconductor devices, especially in efforts directed towards fabricating index-guided buried heterostructure lasers and other unique photonic and electronic devices. In this work we describe the study of compositional disordering induced by MeV implantation of oxygen and krypton into AlAs-GaAs superlattices and the fabrication of index-guided quantum well heterostructure lasers by MeV oxygen ion implantation.

Notes: Abstract. Mono-ortho PCBs are global contaminants of wildlife with the potential to produce toxicity by an aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)–mediated mechanism. To determine the potency of 2,3,3′,4,4′-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 105) for producing reproductive and developmental toxicity, adult ring-necked pheasant hens (Phasianus colchicus) were orally dosed with 0, 0.06, 0.6, or 6 mg PCB 105/kg hen/week for 10 weeks to achieve cumulative doses of 0, 0.6, 6, or 60 mg PCB 105/kg hen after which hens were bred with untreated roosters once per week for 8 weeks. Except at week 6 of the egg-laying period when cumulative egg production in the 6 mg PCB 105/kg hen group was greater than controls, fertilized egg production was not significantly different between treatment groups. Embryo mortality and chick mortality were not significantly different between treatment groups. Total body and heart weights of all chicks 1 day posthatch (dph) were not different between groups, however, liver weights of chicks from the 60 mg/kg treatment group were greater than controls at 1 dph. The first chick to hatch from each hen was reared to 21 dph and among these birds, the total body, liver, and heart weights were not different between groups. There were no dose-related malformations of the beak or limbs, and no signs of subcutaneous edema, ascites, or pericardial edema in chicks at 1 or 21 dph. Hepatic microsomal monooxygenase activities [ethoxyresorufin-O-dealkylase (EROD), benzyloxyresorufin-O-dealkylase (BROD), and methyloxyresorufin-O-dealkylase (MROD)] were significantly elevated in chicks at 1 dph from hens given a cumulative PCB 105 dose of 6 mg/kg and in chicks at 21 dph from hens given a cumulative PCB dose of 60 mg/kg. These results indicate that a cumulative PCB 105 dose up to 60 mg/kg hen does not decrease the production of fertilized eggs or increase embryo or chick mortality in ring-necked pheasants, but does increase chick hepatic monooxygenase activity.

Notes: Abstract The dual-Doppler radar coplane method of scanning and data reduction has been used to determine the internal airflow and radar reflectivity structure of a convective storm. Cumulus convection growing in a moderately sheared wind environment resulted in a nonsteady, moderate intensity thunderstorm. Precipitation fallout and downward moving air are found downshear of an updraft inclined in the downshear direction. Rapid storm translation, vertical shear of the ambient wind, and slow subcloud ascent of inflow air act to establish this observed draft configuration. The absence of significant cold air outflow and its attendant gust front at the surface is attributed to (i) appreciable inflow of slow moving air into the downdraft at the middle layers and (ii) the fact that the potentially coldest air was located too low to contribute significantly to a deep downdraft circulation.

Notes: Abstract In metaphase preparations from leucocytes of the toad, Bufo marinus, conspicuous secondary constrictions are present in the number 7 pair of chromosomes. These constrictions were considered to be the nucleolar organizers since they were associated with nucleoli during prophase. In 35 out of 60 individuals taken from natural populations, the homologous nucleolar organizers produced two equal-sized nucleoli and secondary constrictions (Group I animals). Pour animals (Group II) had only one very large secondary constriction in the majority of their metaphase preparations and an abnormally high frequency of cells containing one nucleolus. The remaining 21 animals (Group III) had unequal-sized constrictions in most of their metaphases but were more variable than the individuals of Groups I or II since they also had metaphases with two equal constrictions or only one constriction. The DNA from individuals of each group was hybridized with radioactive ribosomal RNA in order to correlate the size of nucleoli and constrictions with the amount of DNA (rDNA) homologous to ribosomal RNA. The two animals of Group II which were studied contained 0.056% of their genome homologous to ribosomal RNA a value considerably higher than those found for any of the animals of Groups I or III. These high values for rDNA coupled with the morphological appearance of the nucleolar homologues suggested a duplication of the nucleolar organizer in the homologue with the long constriction. The amount of rDNA in animals of Group I and III varied between 0.025 and 0.048% of the genome. Although the animals with unequal-sized constrictions (Group III) had generally lower contents of rDNA than those with equal-sized constrictions (Group I), the values overlapped between the two groups. Further evidence which correlates the size of nucleoli with the number of ribosomal RNA genes comes from studies with a “small nucleolar” mutant of the Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum). Animals homozygous for this deletion were found to contain only 55% of the complement of rDNA present in the wild type. It is concluded that partial deletions and duplications of the nucleolar organizer as well as highly variable contents of rDNA are common in the genome of these amphibians.

Notes: Summary A variant chromosome no. 21 consisting of two stalks and two satellites in tandem was detected during a survey of a human isolate. The variant segregated in three generations of a large kindred. One male had the variant no. 21, a metacentric Y, and a 47, XXY complement; however, no other evidence of chromosomal nondisjunction was found. Computer-aided analysis of sequentially stained variant no. 21 chromosomes indicated that silver-stained material corresponded to the proximal stalk region (as defined defined by Giemsa). These data support the hypothesis that human nucleolar organizers are localized to the stalks of acrocentric chromosomes.

Notes: Summary Benzodiazepines are widely prescribed, and in 1979 almost 10% of the adult population was taking them. Prior studies of outpatient usage of benzodiazepines have relied on survey or prescription data, which may be confounded by noncompliance. To determine the actual use of benzodiazepines, plasma benzodiazepine concentrations were measured in 225 consecutive outpatients from a university cardiology outpatient service. Self reports indicated that the great majority of the patients (191) were taking at least one medicine, and 70 reported being on a psychotropic drug. Seventy-seven patients reported taking benzodiazepines, the majority being on bromazepam (20), diazepam (26) or oxazepam (19). In 25 of those 77 patients, the reported drug could not be detected in plasma. Conversely, in 10 of the 225 patients, benzodiazepines which were not reported were detected (diazepam or flurazepam). Of those taking benzodiazepines, many had a low concentration, suggesting intermittent rather than regular use. Thus, many patients for whom benzodiazepines are prescribed take them irregularly, and a small group uses them without reporting their prescription. These findings have implications for the clinical presentation of illness and for the possibility of drug interactions.
