Notes: Abstract The remarkable behavior of female Ozophora baranowskii of lightly tapping the male with the hind legs during copulation was studied in relation to multiple copulations, copulation length, and sperm transfer. Multiple copulations did not affect female fecundity, fertility, or longevity. The incidence of tapping was higher in shorter copulations, which did not result in sperm transfer to the female. Female tapping behavior may be a mechanism for choosing between males after copulation has begun.

Notes: Abstract A potentiostatic study of polycrystalline cadmium anodes (99.99%) in KOH solutions has been performed. The correspondingI-t curves obtained for potentials between −840 and −890mV (versus Hg/HgO, KOHsin) show a minimum and a maximum of current for all the concentrations of KOH empoloyed, except for 0.5 M. The mathematical treatment applied to the region appearing after the current minimum suggests that the cadmium oxide growth on the metal takes place according to a diffusion-controlled, three-dimensional hemispherical electrocrystallization with progressive nucleation. However, a change in the type of nucleation must be accepted, from progressive for short times to instantaneous for larger times. This change is more pronounced when the KOH concentration increases and explains the (I 2/J m 2 ) versus (t/t m) and the logI versus logt plots established for the different models of electrocrystallization.

Notes: Abstract Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and d.c polarization resistance measurements (Rp) were used to study the corrosion resistance of surface layers produced by nitrogen ion implantation into copper substrates. Ion implantation was carried out using a Wickham ion beam generator, applying an acceleration voltage of 100keV, a mean current of 0.40 mA and a nitrogen dosage of 4 × 1017 ions cm−2. Surface analyses were made by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Electrochemical measurements (EIS and Rp) performed in a 0.6m sodium chloride solution show nitrogen-implanted specimens have greater a.c. and d.c. apparent polarization resistance than nonimplanted specimens. The results obtained with electrochemical measurements indicate that nitrogen ion implantation in copper forms a protective surface layer which improves the corrosion resistance of the pristine material, a feature of great interest for the design of new contact materials for the electricity and electronic industries.

Notes: Abstract Viscosities and densities of lithium perchlorate solutions in different ethylene glycol-water compositions have been measured at 25.0 and 35.0 °C. From these data, the correspondingB-coefficients of theJones-Dole equation have been determined. TheB-value depends on the solvent composition and it reaches a maximum in the water-rich region. This behaviour is analysed in terms of ionic solvation and solvent structure.

Notes: Summary. We consider the approximation of the vibration modes of an elastic plate in contact with a compressible fluid. The plate is modelled by Reissner-Mindlin equations while the fluid is described in terms of displacement variables. This formulation leads to a symmetric eigenvalue problem. Reissner-Mindlin equations are discretized by a mixed method, the equations for the fluid with Raviart-Thomas elements and a non conforming coupling is used on the interface. In order to prove that the method is locking free we consider a family of problems, one for each thickness $t〉0$ , and introduce appropriate scalings for the physical parameters so that these problems attain a limit when $t\to 0$ . We prove that spurious eigenvalues do not arise with this discretization and we obtain optimal order error estimates for the eigenvalues and eigenvectors valid uniformly on the thickness parameter t. Finally we present numerical results confirming the good performance of the method.

Notes: Abstract  Sequences of Aotus nancymaae immunoglobulin kappa light-chain rearrangements were analyzed after reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Among 22 in-frame rearrangements analyzed, 12 IGKV genes belonging to the families 1, 2, or 3 were identified. Aotus counterparts for all five human IGKJ genes were found. The identity of the deduced human and Aotus amino acid sequences was between 83% and 92% for junctional regions and 74% for the constant region. Sequence comparisons between rearrangements indicated that somatic mutations, the addition of nongermline-encoded nucleotides, and exonuclease trimming contribute to the generation of diversity of Aotus immunoglobulin kappa chains. The high identity of Aotus and human IGK genes is comparable to that of T-cell receptor genes and further supports the proposal to use the Aotus Plasmodium falciparum infection model for the evaluation of malaria vaccine candidates.

Notes: Abstract  A novel method to characterize segregation effects in silica-zirconia materials prepared by the sol-gel method through the alkoxide route is reported. These segregation effects were studied by using the Radial Distribution Function obtained from the X-ray diffractograms. The information obtained by this technique allows one to predict the spatial distribution of one of the oxides into the other as a function of the annealing temperature and the relative concentration of both constituents. Silica and Zirconia were chosen for preparing the alloys since Si and Zr have the same oxidation state and, in spite of both ions being of different atomic radius, they do not produce distortion in the oxygen sub-lattice (due to an oxygen deficiency) which could influence the spatial distribution of both cations into the lattice.

Notes: Abstract  Aluminium matrix-zirconia nanoparticles-reinforced composites were prepared by the infiltration technique. The metallic matrix for these composites stabilizes the tetragonal phase of zirconia at low temperature (450 °C) whereas at 610 °C a mixture of tetragonal and monoclinic was obtained. The wear resistance of zirconia-modified aluminium was significantly improved due to the presence of the ceramic nanoparticles embedded into the matrix.

Notes: Abstract  Zirconia–silica materials prepared by the sol-gel method at different compositions were gamma irradiated with a dosage of 40 Krads for different irradiation periods. The thermoluminescent (TL) emission was studied as a function of the zirconia for temperatures from 100 to 300 °C. Pure zirconia produces a strong TL signal, followed by 50% zirconia sample, while pure silica and the 5% zirconia sample show a weak TL signal. This means that there exists a self-inhibited process possible due, on the one hand to the segregation effects of both components, and on the other to the stabilization of either tetragonal or monoclinic zirconia phases. This effect opens the possibility to control the TL signal in a wide range of dosages allowing to use this system as a wide range dosimeter.
