Notes: Abstract Two species of crustose brown algae (Ralfsiaceae) are discussed. Petroderma maculiforme is described from several Massachusetts collections and Porterinema fluviatile is described for the first time from North America. The known world-wide distribution of both species is cited, and data are given on their ecology, and vegetative and reproductive periodicities. The wide range of salinities from which plants of these species have been collected indicate that they are both euryhaline. Lithoderma lignicola Kjeliman (1883) is synonymized with Petroderma maculiforme (Wollny) Kuckuck (1897) and Porterinema marina Jaasund (1965) with. P. fluviatile (Porter) Waern (1952).

Notes: Abstract The vertical distribution, floristic composition and habitat ecology of sublittoral, benthic algae are described for two deep water, offshore stations in the Gulf of Maine, based on in situ observations and collections to 47 m depth during SCUBA and submarine dives. Twenty species of macroscopic algae were collected between 29 and 45 m. These occurred in two benthic algal associations: a Ptilota serrata association of fleshy, almost exclusively red algae from 29 to 37 m; and a deeper Lithothamnium glaciale association dominated by encrusting corallines and extended from ca 38 m to the lowest limit of macroscopic vegetation at 44 to 45 m. Below 45 m only endozoic and epizoic diatoms associated with sponges were observed. Owing to the seasonal stability, homogeneous composition and clear extinction depths of the two associations, we propose that the extinction depth of benthic seaweeds may provide a useful bioassay for making temporal comparison of water conditions at a single geographic region and, where substrata are similar, spatially among different geographic regions. Data obtained during the Jeffreys Ledge study are discussed in relation to this hypothesis.

Notes: Abstract Microbial souring (production of hydrogen sulfide by sulfate-reducing bacteria, SRB) in crushed Berea sandstone columns with oil field-produced water consortia incubated at 60°C was inhibited by the addition of nitrate (NO3) or nitrite (NO 2 − ). Added nitrate (as nitrogen) at a concentration of 0.71 mM resulted in the production of 0.57–0.71 mM nitrite by the native microbial population present during souring and suppressed sulfate reduction to below detection limits. Nitrate added at 0.36 mM did not inhibit active souring but was enough to maintain inhibition if the column had been previously treated with 0.71 mM or greater. Continuous addition of 0.71–0.86 mM nitrite also completely inhibited souring in the column. Pulses of nitrite were more effective than the same amount of nitrite added continuously. Nitrite was more effective at inhibiting souring than was glutaraldehyde, and SRB recovery was delayed longer with nitrite than with glutaraldehyde. It was hypothesized that glutaraldehyde killed SRB while nitrite provided a long-term inhibition without cell death. Removal of nitrate after as long as 3 months of continuous addition allowed SRB in a biofilm to return to their previous level of activity. Inhibition was achieved with much lower levels of nitrate and nitrite, and at higher temperatures, than noted by other researchers.

Notes: Abstract: High spin states in 126Ce and 127Pr were populated via heavy ion reactions with 182-MeV 35Cl projectiles on a thick 96Ru target. Prompt γ–γ coincidences were measured. New states in 126Ce and 127Pr were found. The results are discussed in the framework of the core–quasiparticle coupling model.

Notes: Abstract The dislocation structure of NiO single crystals used in diffusion studies has been examined by transmission electron microscopy. The crystals contain dislocations (the dislocation density being 4 × 1012 m−2) that are probably a result of the growth process. The dislocations have a Burgers vector ofa/2 〈110〉. On annealing at temperatures above 1400° C the density is reduced to ∼ 7 × 1011 m−2, most of the dislocations forming low angle boundary arrays. The dislocation density was found to be much greater in the vicinity (within 1μm) of a mechanically polished surface.

Notes: Antioxidants such as bisphenol A (BPA) have long been recommended for retention of physical properties on oven-aging of PVC plasticized with certain plasticizers. We have shown how BPA inhibits oxidative fragmentation of plasticizers such as diisodecyl adipate (DIDA) and thus decreases apparent volatility, and how it improves retention of modulus, elongation, and low temperature flexibility. Low concentrations are more beneficial than either zero or high concentrations, especially on longer aging. At higher concentrations, although the plasticizer is retained in the PVC, it becomes less efficient at low temperature, and low-temperature flex is impaired while elongation is preserved. DIDA exudes during oven-aging unless oxidation occurs to prevent it. When BPA is present, exudation is worst at the most efficient concentrations of antioxidant. This appears to be the normal incompatibility of DIDA at 105°C which is permitted by the antioxidant. On oxidation, the dielectric constant of DIDA rises into the 4-8 range, signifying compatibility with PVC, and the DIDA does not exude.

Notes: A review of the compounding requirements for producing flexible PVC with quite satisfactory outdoor life is presented. Testing criteria and the importance of incorporated additives of specific types are reviewed. Data on multi-location outdoor weathering are shown. The prime importance of thickness and additive migration is proposed.

Notes: This paper presents a test method, by modification of ASTM D 1790, to follow the changes in brittleness temperature Tb of plasticized PVC during weathering and to produce a profile of the changes in a composition. It may also be used to measure the change in brittleness temperature at the end of a specific weather test. Few and small specimens are used to avoid the exposure of prohibitively large sheets that otherwise would be required and to make short the unacceptably long time otherwise demanded. It therefore makes programs practical that involve many formulations aimed at superior performance. It gives greater confidence than mere visual and tactile observations that a given compounding ingredient or a total composition can or cannot do the job that is required of it.
