Notes: Abstract TheK-Fluorescence Yield ω k of Germanium has been measured using the coincidence method and investigating the decay of74As. The branching ratios of this decay had to be measured and all relevant determining values, as detection efficiencies, absorption coefficients etc. The experimental results areP K ω K = 0.494±0.012 andω K= 0.561±0.015 usingP K= 0.881±0.003. For the branching ratios of the decay of74As we obtainedEC 2 (1.204) 0.88±0.06%EC 1 (0.596) 32.8±0.8 %Β 1 + (0.596) 24.7±0.8 %EC 1 Β 1 + =1.332±0.046. Additionally the half-lifeT 1/2=(17.76±0.03) d has been measured.

Notes: Abstract A variety of pre-Variscan granitoids and two Variscan monzogranites occurring in the central and western parts of the Lusatian Granodiorite Complex (LGC), Saxonia were dated by the single zircon evaporation method, complemented by whole rock Nd isotopic data and Rb-Sr whole rock and mineral ages. The virtually undeformed pre-Variscan granitoids constitute a genetically related, mostly peraluminous magmatic suite, ranging in composition from two-mica granodiorite, muscovitebearing biotite quartz diorite (tonalite) and granodiorite to biotite granodiorite and monozogranite. 207Pb/206Pb isotopic ratios derived from the evaporation of single zircons separated from 13 samples representing the above rock types display complex spectra which document significant involvement of late Archaean to late Proterozoic continental crust in the generation of the granitoid melts. Mean 207/Pb/206Pb ages for zircons considered to reflect the time of igneous emplacement range between 542 ± 9 and 587 ± 17 Ma, typical of the Cadomian event elsewhere in Europe, whereas zircon xenocrysts yielded ages between 706 ± 13 and 2932 ± Ma. Detrital zircons from greywackes intruded by the granitoids and found as xenoliths in them provided ages between 1136 ± 22 and 2 574 ± Ma. Rb-Sr whole rock data display good to reasonable linear arrays that, with one exception, correspond to the emplacement ages established for the zircons. Two post-tectonic Variscan monzogranites yielded identical 207/Pb/206Pb single zircon ages of 304 ± 14 Ma and record the end of Variscan granitoid activity in the LGC. The variations in Nd and Sr isotopic data of the Cadomian granitoids are consistent with an origin through the melting and mixing of Archean to early Proterozoic crust with variable proportions of mantle-derived, juvenile magmas. Such mixing may have occurred at the base of an active continental margin or in an intraplate setting through plume-related magmatic underplating. The LGC is interpreted here as a Cadomian (Pan-African) terrane distinct from adjacent Variscan and pre-Variscan domains, the origin of which remains obscure and which probably became involved in Palaeozoic terrane accretion late in the Variscan event.

Notes: Summary The muscle enzyme calpain II, in contrast to muscle calpain I, was markedly inhibited by millimolar concentrations of the polyamines spermine and spermidine. These compounds and the calpain inhibitor calpastatin had synergistic inhibitory effects on calpain II. These results suggest that the polyamines may have possible regulatory effects on the in vivo activity of calpain II enzymes.

Notes: Abstract  Dacite tephras produced by the 1991 pre-climactic eruptive sequence at Mt. Pinatubo display extreme heterogeneity in vesicularity, ranging in clast density from 700 to 2580 kg m–3. Observations of the 13 surge-producing blasts that preceded the climactic plinian event include radar-defined estimates of column heights and seismically defined eruptive and intra-eruptive durations. A comparison of the characteristics of erupted material, including microlite textures, chemical compositions, and H2O contents, with eruptive parameters suggests that devolatilization-induced crystallization of the magma occurred to a varying extent prior to at least nine of the explosive events. Although volatile loss progressed to the same approximate level in all of the clasts analyzed (weight percent H2O=1.26-1.73), microlite crystallization was extremely variable (0–22%). We infer that syn-eruptive volatile exsolution from magma in the conduit and intra-eruptive separation of the gas phase was facilitated by the development of permeability within magma residing in the conduit. Correlation of maximum microlite crystallinity with repose interval duration (28–262 min) suggests that crystallization occurred primarily intra-eruptively, in response to the reduction in dissolved H2O content that occurred during the preceding event. Detailed textural characterization, including determination of three-dimensional shapes and crystal size distributions (CSD), was conducted on a subset of clasts in order to determine rates of crystal nucleation and growth using repose interval as the time available for crystallization. Shape and size analysis suggests that crystallization proceeded in response to lessening degrees of feldspar supersaturation as repose interval durations increased. We thus propose that during repose intervals, a plug of highly viscous magma formed due to the collapse of vesicular magma that had exsolved volatiles during the previous explosive event. If plug thickness grew proportionally to the square root of time, and if magma pressurization increased during the eruptive sequence, the frequency of eruptive pulses may have been modulated by degassing of magma within the conduit. Dense clasts in surge deposits probably represent plug material entrained by each subsequent explosive event.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird ein Modell zur Berechnung des Wärmeübergangskoeffizienten beim Blasensieden vorgestellt.
Notes: Abstract A new model to calculate heat transfer coefficients in nucleate boiling is presented. Heat transfer and fluid flow around a single bubble are investigated taking into account the influence of meniscus curvature, adhesion forces and interfacial thermal resistance on the thermodynamic equilibrium at the gas-liquid interface. The model requires only bubble site densities and departure diameters. Further quantities except the thermophysical properties are not needed. From the results bubble growth rates can be derived. As an example nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficients of R-114 were calculated. They agree with experimental values within the experimental accuracy.

Notes: Abstract The metabolism of D- and L-p-fluorophenylalanine (PFP) in DL-PFP resistant and sensitive tobacco cell cultures (Nicotiana tabacum), cell lines TX4 and TX1, respectively, has been compared. The amino acid analogue was taken up at a lower rate by the resistant cell line TX4. Incorporation of PFP into protein was also considerably reduced in TX4 cells, compared to TX1 cells. This, however, resulted mainly from a diminished availability of PFP due to a more rapid conversion of PFP by TX4 cells. TX1 cells and TX4 cells converted PFP qualitatively in the same way. The only detectable metabolite of D-PFP was N-malonyl-D-PFP, while all metabolites of L-PFP were identified as sequent products of the initial deamination of L-PFP by the enzyme phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL). As TX4 cells were endowed with higher PAL-activity than TX1 cells, the resistant cells were able to metabolize L-PFP more rapidly to give, e.g., p-fluorocinnamoyl glucose ester and p-fluorocinnamoyl putrescine. In the presence of the specific PAL-inhibitor α-aminooxy-β-phenylpropionic acid TX4 cells were slightly more sensitive to PFP. This suggests that the better “detoxification” contributes to the acquired resistance. The use of PFP as specific indicator for cell lines with increased PAL-activity, and hence increased levels of phenolic compounds, is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The 22Ne(α,n)25Mgreaction is thought to be one of the main neutron sources for the astrophysical s-process. Thus cross section data for this reaction have been obtained from near the threshold (E α≈570keV) up toE α=2100 keV using the 4 MV DYNAMITRON accelerator at Stuttgart, the windowless gastarget system RHINOCEROS and a 4π neutron detector. Two new resonances have been observed atE α=623 ± 6 and 838 ± 6 kev, which dominate the reaction rate at T9〈0.3.Possible background reactions are discussed.
