Notes: Abstract  General equations to correlate and predict the thermodynamic properties of hydrated borates were developed based on the experimental results according to their structural types. The thermodynamic properties (ΔH f 0 and ΔG f 0) of a hydrated borate phase are the sum of the contributions of the cations in aqueous solution, the borate polyanions, and the structural water to the corresponding thermodynamic properties. This method is called the group contribution method, and it is extensively used to calculate the thermodynamic properties of many kinds of inorganic compounds, such as silicates and clay minerals.

Notes: Abstract Interactions of varying ancymidol concentrations with those of α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) or sucrose in embryo induction medium were related to the production and development of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) somatic embryos, and to the ability of these embryos to germinate. A significant sucrose×ancymidol interaction was observed only for the production of bipolar embryos; 4% sucrose with 0.75 mg l–1 ancymidol gave the best result, 78 g–1 callus. The frequency of globular embryos decreased as sucrose or ancymidol concentrations increased. Sucrose concentration affected embryo germination; 3% and 4% sucrose were optimal with approximately 60% and 40% of bipolar and globular embryos germinating, respectively. Significant ancymidol×NAA interactions were observed for the production of bipolar and globular embryos and their germination. Varying ancymidol concentrations affected embryo production and germination in combination with 0.1 mg l–1 NAA, but not with 1.0 mg l–1 NAA. The treatment combination of 0.1 mg l–1 NAA with 0.75 mg l–1 ancymidol produced the most bipolar embryos, 64 g–1 callus, and the greatest percentages of bipolar and globular embryos germinated, 63% and 42%, respectively.

Notes: Abstract  The Louisiana State University (LSU) Microsystems Engineering Team (μSET) is developing techniques for producing microstructures with predictable 3-D geometry. One approach is based on controlled anodic dissolution of electroplated structures to obtain desired shapes. A finite element model was developed to predict the resulting shapes. As a demonstration of the shaping process, development of LIGA-based scanning probe microscope tips was investigated. An array of micro-posts 1.8 micrometers in diameter and 12 micrometers high was produced using x-ray lithography and subsequent electrodeposition. The posts were sharpened electrochemically. Other geometries are being investigated.

Notes: Abstract Light-induced reactions of poly-Cu with Cl2 and the formation of CuCl x films were studied in the spectral range of 105–400 nm by using synchrotron radiation. The efficiencies of the reactions with Cl2 pressures between 10−5 and 10−2 mbar were determined from the height distributions of spatial structures in the CuCl x films. The heights typically range from 10 to 104 nm. An efficiency of about 107 CuCl x molecules per dissociated Cl2 molecule is observed at high Cl2 exposures. At low Cl2 pressures CuCl x formes anisotropically in the irradiated area. The efficiency is determined by light-induced surface processes supporting the build up of CuCl x in the long wavelength range and competing processes at short wavelengths which reduce the efficiency.

Notes: Abstract The quality and efficiency of etching at room temperature is determined in the wavelength range from 105 nm to 300 nm by replicating a mask on a GaAs(100) wafer and by wavelength selection of synchrotron radiation with filters and a monochromator. A good anisotropy and selectivity is found for Cl2 pressures from 10−2 mbar up to 1.5 mbar, but above 3 mbar the selectivity is lost. Efficiencies for stimulation of the chlorination reaction and for desorption are separated and an optimal efficiency for stimulation of about 100 removed Ga and As atoms per photon is obtained around a wavelength of 122 nm at 1.5 mbar. Growth of reaction products on the surface occurs for short wavelengths and transport processes through layers up to a thickness of 350 nm are relevant. The efficiency and quality of etching can be improved by additional desorption with long wavelengths especially with lasers.

Notes: Abstract We conducted a randomized, double-blind trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of meperidine 2 mg·kg− (M) and meperidine 2 mg·kg− plus midazolam 0.05 mg·kg− (M+M) in 40 pediatric outpatients (age 1 to 17 years) undergoing upper endoscopy procedures. The physician and nurse performing the procedure were asked to rate cooperation, emotional status, drowsiness, and overall efficacy. A blinded observer recorded the frequency of negative behaviors indicating distress, vital signs, and oxygen saturation before, during, and after the procedure. No significant differences were noted in the overall efficacy of the regimens. Good or excellent efficacy was noted in 15 of 21 children (71%) in the M group and 15 of 19 children (79%) in the M+M group by physicians; nurses assigned a good or excellent rating for 14 of 21 (67%) and 13 of 19 (68%) in the M and M+M groups, respectively. Immediately following the procedure, amnesia was noted in 4 of 17 (23%) patients who received M versus 14 of 18 (78%) patients who received M+M (P=0.002). Of the children who received M+M, the amnesia tended to occur more frequently in older children (〉11 years, 8 children, rate of amnesia 100%) than in younger children (≤11 years, 6 of 10 evaluable children, rate of amnesia 60%). There was no significant difference between the frequency of negative behaviors, rate of adverse effects, or changes in vital signs or oxygen saturation noted with the two drug regimens. We conclude that although the two sedation regimens produced similar efficacy, the combination of M+M may be preferred over M alone to enhance amnesia. Additional trials of M+M for sedation prior to other procedures are needed.

Notes: Abstract. Carassius auratus were exposed to mixtures of constant free lead (0.1 mg/L) and particulate lead (adsorbed on gibbsite particles) at varied concentrations (0, 0.4, 0.8, 1.2, 2.0, and 3.0 mg/L). The concentrations of lead and aluminum in the gills and intestines of the fish were determined after exposure. The gills were examined (after the exposure) with a light microscope for any particles adhering to the surface. The examination results revealed that lead accumulations on the gills increased with increased particulate lead concentrations in the ambient water (under conditions of a constant level of free lead), indicating the bioavailability of lead via the gills. Gibbsite particles were also observed on the gill surface after exposure. The ratio of lead and aluminum in the gills was much higher than that in the particles. Our results suggest that there was a two-step process involved in the uptake of particulate lead by fish gills: (1) adherence of the particles on the gill surface where mucus was attached; and (2) desorption of lead from the particles under conditions of the gill microenvironment.

Notes: Abstract A tissue culture procedure for the regeneration of somatic embryos and plantlets from somatic cells of the soybean Glycine max is described. Bean pods of soybean cv. TGM119 were immersed in liquid nitrogen for 20 minutes. Young embryos were excised from the immature seeds and cultured to form calli. Calli grown from the young embryos were incubated in liquid culture for two weeks. The liquid suspension culture was filtered to obtain single cells. The soybean cells were cultured for one month in a liquid medium in hanging drop cultures for development into proembryoids. The proembryoids were maintained on a solid growth medium for 40 days. The resultant callus tissue was transferred into MS media containing selected combinations and concentrations of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, Naphthaleneacetic acid, Kinetin, Benzyladenine and Indoleacetic acid. In the presence of Benzyladenine (0.2 mg/l) and Indoleacetic acid (0.01 mg/l), globular and heart shaped somatic embryos were formed on the surface of the calli. Calli containing somatic embryos were transferred into liquid medium and incubated under low light conditions. After six months further incubation, more than 1,000 plantlets and a large number of somatic embryoids at various developmental stages were obtained per flask.
