Description: Overview photos were taken when arriving at the snowpit site of interest and before the snowpit was excavated. A standard digital camera (Olympus tough TG-5) was used to document the surface conditions and environment for each snowpit event. These images should be used to understand surroundings of the snowpit and conditions on the day of measurements. During winter months the measurement area of a snowpit was indicated using two orange flags. However, a transect snowpit event and snowpits during the summer seasons will not have this marking.

Description: A NIR camera allows a measurement of the reflectance of the snow profile wall to identify layers of snow grains with different specific surface area (SSA) with a spatial resolution of about 1 mm. The processing of the images of RGB-cameras must consider the sensitivity of the different color pixels. The setup of the reference targets, the flat surface and the diffuse illumination is important to get high-quality images. A geometrically corrected NIR-photo gives an objective measure of the snow stratigraphy and is observer independent. This efficient measurement has been adapted for use in polar night and day by blocking out external sunlight and packaging the camera and the illuminating infrared lights into a wooden box. The width and height of the inside of the box was 500 x 675 mm. A blanket was used to prevent any light seeping through. Inside the box, lambertian reflectance targets were mounted to account for any irregular light conditions. For MOSAiC, we used lights with two different wavelengths, 850 nm and 940 nm. We used the NIR camera in excavated snowpit walls to record the vertical and horizontal spatial variability of the SSA and snow stratigraphy. If the snowpit was higher than the NIR box, then measurement was repeated for different heights, using a ruler as a reference. NIR was also used to take images of the surface to account for small-scale spatial variability of the SSA of the snow/SSL surface. For each set of images, a dark image (without any lamps, recorded in this dataset as 0 nm) was taken, followed by images with each of the two lamps (using external light switches), to account for potential light leaks. The MAPIR camera (Survey3N Camera - Near Infrared (NIR) - MAPIR CAMERA) was built into the box and triggered by an external button. Description: In the designated snowpits on the MOSAic expedition a 100cm3 sample of snow was measured for density in the field, approximately every 3 vertical centimetres. The same snow volume was melted for salinity measurements and sealed into glass jars onboard Polarstern. As a result, δ18O and δ2H isotope composition was measured at the same intervals as density and salinity profiles, included in the snowpit dataset bundle. These samples were then transported to the WSL laboratory in Switzerland to analyse the stable water isotopes (δ18O and δ2H). This dataset provides details on the date and coordinates of the snowpit event, the height of the sample in the snow profile, and the corresponding isotope composition. This dataset includes the isotopic composition of the samples obtained in the winter months (October 2019 to May 2020). After analysis of the samples, and comparing the values to a parallel dataset (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.948511), it was identified that our samples needed to be corrected due to evaporative fractionation during sample storage. The corrected values are included in this published dataset and we recommend that future studies using this dataset use these corrected values only. The correction was done by calculating the mean of this dataset to the mean of the parallel dataset and correcting for the difference. As a result, the δ18O was corrected by -6.4‰, the δ2H was corrected by -36.4‰. The new values are located in the columns 'δ18O H2O [‰ SMOW] (Corrected)' and 'δD H2O [‰ SMOW] (Corrected)'. We would like to emphasise that calculations of d-excess values for this dataset need interpreting carefully.

Description: The SnowMicroPen (SMP) is a portable device for high-resolution in-situ measurements of penetration resistance in snow and can be correlated to snow microstructure (density, specific surface area, snow type). The penetration force is measured using a piezo-electric sensor and is digitally recorded every 4 micrometers. The SMP signal can infer stratigraphy, snow type, and snow microstructure at a vertical resolution of 1-4 mm. Based on the force signal, density and specific surface area parameterizations are calculated. Through horizontally repeated measurements, the SMP can help relate detailed point-scale snow profiles to a larger sampling area and provide information about the spatial variability of snow stratigraphy and physical snow properties. During the MOSAiC expedition (October 2019-September 2020), the SMP was used to measure 389 snowpits or transects to allow for upscaling of detailed point measurements of snow profiles. This dataset consists of 6837 SMP measurements and covers a complete annual cycle of snow stratigraphy on sea ice in the high Arctic. Description: The snow temperature was measured using a waterproof thermometer with a needle probe. A ruler was used to determine the measuring height. 0 cm indicates the snow-ice interface. The measurements included the surface and the snow-ice interface temperature. Additional temperature measurements were taken at 5 cm intervals. Description: A density cutter of fixed volume (100 cm3) and known weight was used to measure the density profile of snow/SSL in 3 cm intervals. The height of the sampled volume was recorded with a ruler. 0 cm is the snow-ice interface. The combined weight of the density cutter and the snow inside it was measured with digital scales. The resulting density is the weight of snow/volume. The snow from the density cutter was collected in plastic containers and used for subsequent salinity and stable water isotope measurements. Description: We used a regular foldable wooden ruler to measure the height of the snow and the SSL. The ruler was also used for height readings for all other measurements. 0 cm is the snow-ice interface. If multiple snow height measurements were taken for one snowpit event, details can be found in the comments section, which give a range of the depth values within the 1 m wide snowpit. Description: SWE is the amount of water contained within the snowpack. To determine SWE, the snow depth and density are required. Snow depth (HS) is related to SWE by the local bulk density of snow (ρb): SWE = HS ρb / ρw, where HS is measured in mm, ρb in kg m−3, ρw is the density of water (1000 kg m−3), and SWE is measured in mm of water equivalent. At each snowpit, the ETH-SWE tube, was inserted into the snow vertically and then sealed at the bottom. The weight of the snow inside the cylindrical tube was then measured with a spring scale. If the snow cover is deeper than 0.45 m (height of the tube), then the SWE must be measured in several steps, using a ruler to note the snow height that the sample was taken from. The total water equivalent of the snow cover must be calculated as the sum of the vertically aligned samples. This dataset records the individual sample measurements, explaining why there may be multiple data entries for one snowpit event. We also measured the height of snow in each measurement, so we can back-calculate the snow density using an independent method.
