Notes:
Summary By means of enzyme-histochemical methods the enzyme pattern of the wall (sections) and the endothelium (endothelial membrane preparations) of aorta and a. pulmonalis in rabbits and calves resp. was investigated. Most of the enzymes tested rendered positive results. A remarkable feature is the high content of LDH and G-6-PDH. This finding indicates that glycolysis plays an important rôle in the metabolism of the vascular wall. No quantitative differences of the enzymes are observed in the various segments of the aorta; there are, however, slight differences between the values obtained in the aorta and those obtained in the a. pulmonalis (i.e. higher values are obtained in the a. pulmonalis). Slight qualitative differences are found in the enzyme pattern of the muscle cells of the vascular wall and that of the endothelial cells. They are possibly explicable by the different environment and/or the various functional requirements or by differences in the two species used in the investigation.
