Description: Population control of small sucking insects has been challenging, and alternative control methods are constantly being sought. Visual traps have long been used to monitor and control pests. Colored sticky cards are widely used for diurnal pests, but their effects are influenced by environmental light conditions. Artificial light traps are mostly used for nocturnal pests. Here, we explored and evaluated light-emitting diode (LED) traps for the monitoring and control of small diurnal sucking insects using greenhouse tests targeting the greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum. We tested the trapping efficacy of the LED water pan trap, assessed the most attractive LED light and analyzed its efficacy under different weather conditions. The results showed that the LED water pan trap was too inefficient to be useful. Green LEDs were more attractive than yellow LEDs, UV LEDs and green-UV combinations. Regardless of sunny or cloudy conditions, the green LED trap caught more than twice the number of whiteflies than the yellow sticky card alone under summer shading conditions. Our study suggests that LED traps have a significant field application value in whitefly mass trapping and may also be efficient for other diurnal insects. The design of LED traps specific for diurnal insects is discussed.

Description: A novel Energy Selective Filter (ESF) mounted in waveguide is presented based on nonlinear element, which is sensitive to the power intensity of incident wave achieving frequency selection as well as energy selection. The proposed ESF consists of three parts, the middle circuit board with diode loaded, the upper and bottom ground metallic patches. The mechanism of the ESF is analyzed through equivalent circuit model and its performance is investigated numerically and experimentally. According to the waveguide measurement, a shielding effectiveness of 13 dB is achieved in case of high power input and the insertions loss is less than 0.3 dB across the whole frequency range when low power signal inputs. It is a pluggable component in waveguide that could reflect high power signals of specific frequency to protect the following electronic equipment.

Description: A graphene-based controllable broadband terahertz metamaterial absorber with transmission band is presented in this paper. It consists of a graphene-SiO2-frequency selective surface (FSS) sandwich structure. The sinusoidal graphene layer supports continuous plasmonic resonances, forming a broad electric-tuning absorbing band. Bandpass FSS constructs a transmission window outside the absorbing band. The simulation results indicate that the absorption from 0.5 THz to 1 THz can be tuned continuously from 0.4 to 0.9 with angle and polarization independence. A transparent window peaking at 1.65 THz maintains high transmittance over 0.7. The metamaterial absorber has potential applications for detection, stealth, filtering, and electromagnetic compatibility.

Description: Rapidly increasing mobile data traffic have placed a significant burden on mobile Internet networks. Due to limited network capacity, a mobile network is congested when it handles too much data traffic simultaneously. In turn, some customers leave the network, which induces a revenue loss for the mobile service provider. To manage demand and maximize revenue, we propose a dynamic plan control method for the mobile service providers under connection-speed-restriction pricing. This method allows the mobile service provider to dynamically set the data plans’ availability for potential customers’ new subscriptions. With dynamic plan control, the service provider can adjust data network utilization and achieve high customer satisfaction and a low churn rate, which reflect high service supply chain performance. To find the optimal control policy, we transform the high-dimensional dynamic programming problem into an equivalent mixed integer linear programming problem. We find that dynamic plan control is an effective tool for managing demand and increasing revenue in the long term. Numerical evaluation with a large European mobile service provider further supports our conclusion. Furthermore, when network capacity or potential customers’ willingness to join the network changes, the dynamic plan control method generates robust revenue for the service provider.

Description: In this paper, we propose and implement a novel framework of deep learning based antenna selection (DLBAS)-aided multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) software defined radio (SDR) system. The system is constructed with the following three steps: (1) a MIMO SDR communication platform is first constructed, which is capable of achieving uplink communication from users to the base station via time division duplex (TDD); (2) we use the deep neural network (DNN) from our previous work to construct a deep learning decision server to assist the MIMO SDR platform for making intelligent decision for antenna selection, which transforms the optimization-driven decision making method into a data-driven decision making method; and (3) we set up the deep learning decision server as a multithreading server to improve the resource utilization ratio. To evaluate the performance of the DLBAS-aided MIMO SDR system, a norm-based antenna selection (NBAS) scheme is selected for comparison. The results show that the proposed DLBAS scheme performed equally to the NBAS scheme in real-time and out-performed the MIMO system without AS with up to 53% improvement on average channel capacity gain.

Description: The shellfish–algae mode of integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA) is a sustainable aquaculture method that benefits the environment and the carbon cycle. However, most current shellfish–algae aquaculture modes are based on the expansion of kelp aquaculture. Due to the low tolerance of kelp to high temperatures, integrated shellfish–algae aquaculture areas often become shellfish monocultures in summer, which may lead to both high mortality rate of shellfish and to economic loss while causing serious environmental harm via eutrophication, decreases in dissolved oxygen (DO), and decreases in pH. In this study, we investigated the effects of different ratios of seaweed (Gracilaria lemaneiformis), which is tolerant of high temperatures, to Japanese scallop (Patinopecten yessoensis) on water quality and environmental parameters. A two-day small-scale enclosure water body experiment was conducted in Sanggou Bay (Shandong, China) in August 2019. The results demonstrated that culturing shellfish alone significantly affected pH, DO, eutrophication, and other environmental indicators, as well as the carbonate system. The negative environmental impact of the shellfish–algae aquaculture system was much smaller. However, too high a proportion of algae might consume excessive amounts of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and nutrients, while too low a proportion of algae might not fully absorb the nutrients released by the cultured shellfish, in turn leading to an increased risk of eutrophication. The shellfish–algae aquaculture system not only improved the inorganic carbon system, but also the organic carbon system. At the end of the experiment, all the parameters of the inorganic carbon system had decreased significantly, while all the parameters of the organic carbon system had increased significantly. The results of this study illustrate the need to include macroalgae rotations in summer, and that an appropriate ratio of shellfish to algae is necessary to achieve a sustainable aquaculture system. Moreover, this research has also confirmed the importance of the future and related research in the actual production, which will provide useful information to guide governmental strategies for summer aquaculture rotations and insight into the controversy concerning whether aquaculture is a carbon source or sink.
