    Description: In order to study the coupling relationship between large earthquakes and the ionosphere, the techniques of ionosphere data acquisition were refined by the Crustal Movement Observation Network of China (CMONOC) to detect the pre-earthquake ionospheric abnormal and coseismic ionospheric disturbances (CID) of the Mw 6.6 Lushan earthquake on 20 April 2013. Based on the regional ionosphere maps (RIMs) derived from the Global Positioning System (GPS) observations of CMONOC, the ionospheric local effects near the epicenter of the Lushan earthquake one month prior to the shock were analyzed. The results show that the total electron content (TEC) anomalies appeared 12–14 (6–8 April), 19 (1 April), and 25–27 (24–26 March) days prior to the Lushan earthquake, which are defined as periods 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Multi-indices including the ring current index (Dst), geomagnetic planetary (Kp) index, wind plasma speed (Vsw) index, F10.7, and solar flares were utilized to represent the solar–terrestrial environment in different scales and eliminate the effects of solar and geomagnetic activities on the ionosphere. After the interference of solar–terrestrial activity and the diurnal variation in the lower thermosphere were excluded, the TEC variations with obvious equatorial ionospheric anomaly (EIA) in period-1 were considered to be related to the Lushan earthquake. We further retrieved precise slant TECs (STECs) near the epicenter to study the coseismic ionospheric disturbance (CID). The results show that there was clear STEC disturbance occurring within half an hour after the Lushan earthquake, and the CID propagation distance was less than the impact radius of the Lushan earthquake (689 km). The shell models with different altitudes were adopted to analyze the propagation speed of the CID. It is found that at the F2-layer with the altitude of 277 km, which had a CID horizontal propagation velocity of 0.84 ± 0.03 km/s, was in accordance with the acoustic wave propagation velocity. The calculated velocity acoustic wave from the epicenter to the ionospheric pierce points of this shell model was about 0.53 ± 0.03 km/s, which was also consistent with its actual velocity within the altitude of 0–277 km. Affected by the geomagnetic field, the CID mainly propagated along the southeast direction at the azimuth of 190°, which was almost parallel to the local magnetic line.

    Description: Although most lotic ecosystems are groundwater dependent, our knowledge on the relatively long-term ecological effects of groundwater discharge on downstream reaches remains limited. We surveyed four connected reaches of a Chinese karst stream network for 72 consecutive months, with one reach, named Hong Shi Zi (HSZ), evidently affected by groundwater. We tested whether, compared with other reaches, HSZ had (1) milder water temperature and flow regimes, and (2) weaker influences of water temperature and flow on benthic algal biomass represented by chlorophyll a (Chl. a) concentrations. We found that the maximum monthly mean water temperature in HSZ was 0.6 °C lower than of the adjacent upstream reach, and the minimum monthly mean water temperature was 1.0 °C higher than of the adjacent downstream reach. HSZ had the smallest coefficient of variation (CV) for water temperature but the largest CV for discharge. Water temperature and discharge displayed a significant 12-month periodicity in all reaches not directly groundwater influenced. Only water temperature displayed such periodicity in HSZ. Water temperature was an important predictor of temporal variation in Chl. a in all reaches, but its influence was weakest in HSZ. Our findings demonstrate that longer survey data can provide insight into groundwater–surface water interactions.

    Description: Underwater wet welding technology is widely used. Because the stability of droplet transfer in underwater wet welding is poor, the feasibility of improving the droplet transfer mode has been discussed from various technical directions. In this work, the characteristics of pulsating wire feeding were studied in the pulsating wire feeding mode by investigating the effects of changing the pulsating frequency, the wire withdrawal speed, and the wire withdrawal quantity on the droplet transfer process and the welding quality. With the aim of improving weld forming and welding stability, the authors selected the coefficient of variation and the ratio of unstable droplet transfer as the indexes to evaluate the effect of droplet transfer control. The pulsating wire feeding process of underwater wet flux-cored wire was analyzed in depth, and the following conclusions were drawn: using the pulsating wire feeding mode and after comparing and analyzing the pulsed wire feeding process under the same frequency condition, the authors found that the forming and stability were better under the conditions of slower withdrawal speed and smaller withdrawal quantity. The short-circuit transition ratio decreased steadily with the increase of pulsating wire feeding frequency, the rejection transition ratio first rose and then decreased, and the splash ratio first decreased and then rose.

    Description: The DREB transcription factors regulate multiple stress response genes, and are therefore useful for molecular plant breeding. AhDREB, a stress-inducible gene, was isolated from Atriplex hortensis L. and introduced into Populus tomentosa Carrière under the control of the CaMV35S promoter. Under salt stress, the chlorophyll content and net photosynthetic rate were higher in transgenic lines than in the wild type (WT). Moreover, the rate of electrolyte penetration (REC) was lower in the transgenic lines. Additional analyses revealed that the AhDREB transgenic plants generally displayed lower malondialdehyde (MDA) activity but higher superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities and proline content than the WT under salt stress. RNA sequencing indicated that AhDREB could enhance tolerance to salt by activating various downstream genes in the transgenic plants. Furthermore, no growth inhibition was detected in transgenic plants expressing AhDREB driven by the constitutive CaMV35S promoter. The transcriptome showed 165 and 52 differentially expressed genes in transgenic plants under stress and non-stress conditions, respectively, among which no significant metabolic pathway was enriched and no unintended effects have yet been identified. Together, these results suggest that AhDREB may be a good candidate gene for increasing salt tolerance in transgenic poplar breeding.

    Description: Transit offers stop-to-stop services rather than door-to-door services. The trip from a transit hub to the final destination is often entitled as the “last-mile” trip. This study innovatively proposes a hybrid approach by combining the data mining technique and multiple attribute decision making to identify the optimal travel mode for last-mile, in which the data mining technique is applied in order to objectively determine the weights. Four last-mile travel modes, including walking, bike-sharing, community bus, and on-demand ride-sharing service, are ranked based upon three evaluation criteria: travel time, monetary cost, and environmental performance. The selection of last-mile trip modes in Chengdu, China, is taken as a typical case example, to demonstrate the application of the proposed approach. Results show that the optimal travel mode highly varies by the distance of the “last-mile” and that bike-sharing serves as the optimal travel mode if the last-mile distance is no more than 3 km, whilst the community bus becomes the optimal mode if the distance equals 4 and 5 km. It is expected that this study offers an evidence-based approach to help select the reasonable last-mile travel mode and provides insights into developing a sustainable urban transport system.
