    Description: Adaptive waveform design for cognitive radar in the case of extended target detection under compound-Gaussian (CG) sea clutter is addressed. Based on the CG characteristics of sea clutter, the texture component is employed to characterize the clutter ensemble during each closed-loop feedback and its estimation can be used for the next transmitted waveform design. The resulting waveform design problem is formulated according to the following optimization criterion: maximization of the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for sea clutter suppression, and imposing a further constraint on sidelobes level of the waveform autocorrelation outputs for decreasing the false alarm rate. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach.

    Description: The tortuosity of the pore structure is an important factor affecting medium (water and harmful ions) transport in cement-based materials. In this study, a new tortuosity model was established to reveal the effect of aggregate size, morphology, and graded media on the transport path in cement-based materials. Based on the stereological principle and the geometric algorithm, the distribution model of the ideal pebble and polygonal aggregate in cement-based materials was given first. Then, based on the image processing technology and MATLAB software, the morphology of the actual aggregate was also characterized to prove the similarity relationship between the ideal aggregate and actual aggregate. The reliability of the tortuosity model was verified by the mercury intrusion porosimetry test and data from other literature. Based on the tortuosity model, the influences of the aggregate particle shape parameters, hydration degree, and water-to-cement ratio on the tortuosity of the transport path were analyzed. Finally, the tortuosity model was further simplified to facilitate engineering application.

    Description: Leucine-rich glioma inactivated 1 (LGI1) is a secreted protein that interacts with ADAM transmembrane proteins, and its mutations are linked to human epilepsy. The function of LGI1 in CNS development remains undefined. Here, we report novel functions of LGI1 in the generation of cerebellar granule precursors (CGPs) and differentiation of radial glial cells (RGCs) in the cerebellum. A reduction in external granule layer thickness and defects in foliation were seen in embryonic and new-born LGI1 knockout (KO) mice. BrdU staining showed an inhibited proliferation of CGPs in KO embryos, which might be explained by the reduced Sonic hedgehog in embryos. In addition, the differentiation of RGCs into Bergmann glias was suppressed in KO mice. Enhanced Jagged1-Notch1 signaling in KO mice via reduced β-secretase proteolysis suggests that altered phenotype of RGCs is due to abnormal Notch1 signaling. Together, our results demonstrate that LGI1 is an essential player in the cerebellar development. Scientific Reports 5 doi: 10.1038/srep07827

    Description: Impurity removal and modification of rare earth concentrate powder were conducted by roasting weak acid-weak alkali leaching to obtain the active components of denitrification catalysts. NH3 selective catalytic reduction catalyst samples were prepared by mixing and kneading with pseudo-γ-Al2O3 boehmite as carrier. The results showed that the Ce7O12 content in the active component samples increased and dispersed more evenly. The grain size of the samples was refined, the specific surface area increased, and the active sites exposed more. Ce coexists in the form of Ce3+ and Ce4+. Fe coexists in the form of Fe3+ and Fe2+, but Fe3+ is abundant. Some Ce, La, Nd, Pr, Fe, Mn, and other components formed solid melts during preparation, which increased the synergistic catalytic effect. The denitrification efficiency of the catalyst sample was 92.8% under the conditions of reaction temperature 400 °C, NO content was 600 ppm, NH3/NO ratio was 1.5, and O2 concentration was 4%.

    Description: Positively-charged surfaces on implants have a similar potential to upregulate osteogenesis of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) as electromagnetic therapy approved for bone regeneration. Generally, their osteogenesis functions are generally considered to stem from the charge-induced adhesion of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins without exploring the underlying surface charge/cell signaling molecule pathways. Herein, a positively-charged surface with controllable tertiary amines is produced on a polymer implant by plasma surface modification. In addition to inhibiting the TNF-α expression, the positively-charged surface with tertiary amines exhibits excellent cytocompatibility as well as remarkably upregulated osteogenesis-related gene/protein expressions and calcification of the contacted BMSCs. Stimulated by the charged surface, these BMSCs display high iNOS expressions among the three NOS isoforms. Meanwhile, downregulation of the iNOS by L-Can or siRNA inhibit osteogenic differentiation in the BMSCs. These findings suggest that a positively-charged surface with tertiary amines induces osteogenesis of BMSCs via the surface charge/iNOS signaling pathway in addition to elevated ECM protein adhesion. Therefore, creating a positively-charged surface with tertiary amines is a promising approach to promote osseointegration with bone tissues. Scientific Reports 5 doi: 10.1038/srep09369

    Description: In recent years, urban flooding occurred frequently because of extreme rainstorms. Sponge city construction can effectively mitigate urban flooding and improve urban rainwater utilization. Low-impact development (LID) is regarded as a sustainable solution for urban stormwater management. In this project, a comprehensive evaluation system was developed based on environmental and economic benefits using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) of the United States (US) Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The performance of four LID scenarios with the same locations but different sizes of green roof, permeable pavement, concave greenbelt, and rain garden were analyzed in the Sucheng district of Jiangsu province in China. Results illustrate that the green roof performed best in reducing runoff, while the rain garden performed worst. The LID combination scenario (1) that contained more green roof, permeable pavement, and concave greenbelt facilities, but fewer rain gardens had the better comprehensive performance on the basis of environmental and economic benefits. The combined scenario (2) (LID proportion of maximum construction area was 40%) could also be an alternative. This study provides a guide to optimize LID layouts for sponge city construction, which can also provide optimal selection for other sponge city constructions.

    Description: Around the world, the increasing drought, which is exacerbated by climate change, has significant impacts on vegetation carbon assimilation. Identifying how short-term climate anomalies influence vegetation productivity in a timely and accurate manner at the satellite scale is crucial to monitoring drought. Satellite solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has recently been reported as a direct proxy of actual vegetation photosynthesis and has more advantages than traditional vegetation indices (e.g., the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI and the Enhanced Vegetation Index, EVI) in monitoring vegetation vitality. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of SIF in interpreting drought effects on vegetation productivity in Victoria, Australia, where heat stress and drought are often reported. Drought-induced variations in SIF and absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) estimations based on NDVI and EVI were investigated and validated against results indicated by gross primary production (GPP). We first compared drought responses of GPP and vegetation proxies (SIF and APAR) during the 2009 drought event, considering potential biome-dependency. Results showed that SIF exhibited more consistent declines with GPP losses induced by drought than did APAR estimations during the 2009 drought period in space and time, where APAR had obvious lagged responses compared with SIF, especially in evergreen broadleaf forest land. We then estimated the sensitivities of the aforementioned variables to meteorology anomalies using the ARx model, where memory effects were considered, and compared the correlations of GPP anomaly with the anomalies of vegetation proxies during a relatively long period (2007–2013). Compared with APAR, GPP and SIF are more sensitive to temperature anomalies for the general Victoria region. For crop land, GPP and vegetation proxies showed similar sensitivities to temperature and water availability. For evergreen broadleaf forest land, SIF anomaly was explained better by meteorology anomalies than APAR anomalies. GPP anomaly showed a stronger linear relationship with SIF anomaly than with APAR anomalies, especially for evergreen broadleaf forest land. We showed that SIF might be a promising tool for effectively evaluating short-term drought impacts on vegetation productivity, especially in drought-vulnerable areas, such as Victoria.
