    Description: Slow-slip events (SSEs) have been detected to occur along the southern flank of Kilauea volcano (Hawaii, USA). SSEs have been recorded using continuous Global Positioning System (GPS) and tiltmeters stations. Until now, differential radar interferometry results have not been conclusive about the spatial pattern of associated vertical motion, although GPS time series show subsidence signals. In late May 2012, the most recent SSE began and it lasted for approximately 3 days. SSE was accompanied by earthquakes at the decollement ( ∼7--9km ), and an unusual swarm across the Koa’e fault system (June 5th). Here, we use a dense GPS network and Radarsat-2 satellite data to map the associated ground deformation. A SSE fault-slip map is inferred using elastic modeling and compared with the fault-slip map due to long-term volcano flank motion. Inferred long- and short-term fault-slip distributions allow observing a complementary pattern, likely related to different fault properties.

    Description: We present an up-to-date high resolution picture of the ongoing crustal deformation field of Iberian region, based on an extensive combination of permanent and non-permanent GPS observations carried out since 1999. We detected appreciable deformation along the NW and SE margins of the Iberian Peninsula and along the Gibraltar arc, while on the inner parts of the peninsula, the crustal deformation occurs locally at rate 〈 15 nanostrain/year.

    Description: Stratigraphic and morphostructural analyses have been carried out in the Mt. Etna volcanic region (eastern Sicily) to investigate in detail the deformation events that have affected the sedimentary successions forming the substratum of the volcano. In the foredeep, Quaternary submarine sedimentation ended 600 ka ago when the whole area emerged in response to homogeneous regional uplift. The irregular distribution of a stratigraphic marker, recognized through the analysis of more than 250 borehole logs, suggests that local dynamics also affected the area. We identify both compressional tectonic dynamics and volcano-related tectonic activity, and discriminate among their associated deformations. In particular, we quantify the vertical deformation component of the compressional structures (thrusts and related folds) and recognize for the first time a vertical component of deformation whose pattern clearly indicates a doming process acting at Mt. Etna. The comparison between long-term and short-term rates suggests that the doming has acted consistently over space and time through the last 600 ka and provides clues to the source of uplift. This component, defined by a specific Quaternary sedimentary horizon, has been compared with vertical deformation obtained by analytical inversion of morphological substratum data, and localizes the source at a depth of ∼16 km, at the mantle-crust transition. This uplift may be the consequence of hydration occurring in the altered ocean-like crust.

    Description: In this paper we present the main results inferred from GPS data collected between 1998.00 and 2009.78 along the northern rim of the Hyblean Plateau from 9 continuous and 23 survey-mode sites. From a geological point of view, this area is of great interest because 1) it represents an important piece of the collision front between Nubia and Eurasia 2) it is very close to the biggest European volcano Mount Etna and 3) it has been hit by strong earthquakes in the past (1169 and 1693) that struggled the cities of Catania, Siracusa and Ragusa provoking tens of thousands of casualties. We have found that the ground deformation pattern clearly defines an area of prevailing contraction along the northern rim of the Hyblean Plateau with a maximum negative strain-rate of about 0.14µstrain/yr in agreement with both geological and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data. In addition, a transition to extensional regime is acting toward the central sector of the plateau. The velocity field referred to the Eurasian frame indicates that a large part of the plateau is dominated by a 5.4mm/yr northward motion.
