    Notes: A two-dimensional microstrip gas chamber (MSGC) with a 5 cm × 5 cm detection area has been developed. It has 254 anodes and 255 back strips, both with 200 µm pitches. Using this MSGC, linear polarization of X-rays was successfully measured in the energy range 6–14 keV. In addition, the performance of the MSGC as an X-ray imaging polarimeter has been simulated using the EGS4 program (Electron Gamma Shower, Version 4) modified for this purpose. In this article, the results of both the polarization measurement and the simulation are reported.

    Notes: An imaging soft X-ray microscope with zone plates has been installed at Rits SR Center (Ritsumeikan University, Kusatsu, Japan). With this microscope, specimens were set in air, which made it possible to investigate the specimens without breaking the vacuum of the microscope. The specimens can be prefocused with an optical microscope. Dry and wet biospecimens in air were observed. A new optical system was designed to improve the resolution.

    Notes: A Wolter-type grazing-incidence mirror was used as an objective for an imaging X-ray fluorescence microscope. The microscope was constructed at the beamline 6C2 of the Photon Factory. The shortest wavelength used was ∼0. 1 nm, which was limited by the grazing-incidence angle of the mirror. To demonstrate the possibility of recording X-ray fluorescence images, several fine grids were used as test specimens. Characteristic X-rays emitted from each specimen could be clearly imaged. Spatial resolution was estimated to be better than 10 µm.

Soldiers are produced soon after colony foundation and the number of soldiers increases nonlinearly during colony growth. The number of soldiers scales to the square-root of the number of non-soldiers and linearly to the surface area of the gall. This suggests that soldiers are produced to defend an area, for example the perimeter of the colony or the surface of the gall, rather than individual aphids.

    Notes: Abstract A method using the conventional finite elements and a finite domain energy integral, Ĵ, was applied to determining the dynamic stress intensity factors for rapidly propagating cracks not only in linear elastic but also in viscoelastic bodies. In order to simulate crack propagation, a node release technique was employed in which the nodal force near the crack tip was gradually reduced to zero according to the prescribed scheme. Several schemes were tested and the most satisfactory result was found to be obtained by the linear relaxation scheme. The dynamic stress intensity factors were determined by evaluating the Ĵ integral. Three seemingly different representations of Ĵ-integral were used and each result for linear elastic problems was in good agreement with the analytical solutions and other available numerical results. The dynamic stress intensity factors for viscoelastic problems were also determined by using a proper representation of Ĵ-integral.

    Notes: Abstract A new approach based on the inverse analysis is proposed for estimating material parameters of nonlinear constitutive equations. Using the measurable response of experimental specimens, an inverse analysis is carried out to predict most suitable values of unknown material constants. In general, the accuracy of prediction depends on geometries of specimens and types of measurements. In order to identify optimal experimental procedure, the Kalman filter technique is employed. We have chosen the Gurson model for porous elastic-plastic materials as the material model and its two parameters as the unknown constants. Gurson's constitutive model has been widely used for studying ductile fracture as well as shear localization of various metals. Detailed finite element simulations are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in determination of the two parameters relating to void nucleation. In the Kalman filter procedure, it is found that the rate of convergence to the correct solutions depends on shapes of test specimens, initial estimates of the unknown parameters, and accuracy of measured data as well as computed reference data. Our analysis predicts that when two differently shaped specimens under tension are used (i.e., a plate with a center hole and another with double side notches), a significant improvement occurs in the rate of convergence.

    Notes: Abstract The distribution of glucokinase in rat liver under both normal feeding and fasting-refeeding conditions was investigated immunohistochemically. Under normal feeding conditions, glucokinase immunoreactivity was observed in both nuclei and cytoplasm of parenchymal cells. The nuclei were stained intensely and evenly, whereas the cytoplasm showed weak immunoreactivity of different degrees of staining intensity depending on the location of the cells. The cytoplasm of perivenous hepatocytes was stained more intensely, though not so much more, than that of periportal hepatocytes. The cytoplasm of hepatocytes surrounding the terminal hepatic venule (THV), of hepatocytes surrounding the portal triad, and of some other hepatocytes showed a stronger immunoreactivity than that of residual hepatocytes. The nuclear immunoreactivity in hepatocytes surrounding the portal triad and in some other hepatocytes was weak or absent, and positive immunoreactivity was detected at the plasma membrane of some of these cells. After 72 h of fasting, glucokinase immunoreactivity was markedly decreased in all hepatocytes. After the start of refeeding, the cytoplasmic immunoreactivity began to increase first in the parenchymal cells surrounding the THV and extended to those in the intermediate zone followed by those in the periportal zone. In contrast, the increase in nuclear immunoreactivity started in hepatocytes situated in the intermediate zone adjacent to the perivenous zone and then extended to those in the perivenous zone followed by those in the periportal zone. Hepatocytes surrounding either THV or portal triad showed a distinctive change in immunoreactivity during the refeeding period. After 10 h of refeeding, strong immunoreactivity was observed in both the cytoplasm and the nuclei of all hepatocytes, and appreciable glucokinase immunoreactivity was detected at the plasma membrane of some hepatocytes. These findings are discussed from the standpoint of a functional role of glucokinase in hepatic glucose metabolism.
