Notes: Abstract Measurements of the viscosityη and the densityϱ are reported for 14 binary mixtures of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with hydrocarbons, haloalkanes, and alkylamines at 303.15 K. The viscosity data have been correlated with equations of Grunberg and Nissan, of McAllister, and of Auslaender. Furthermore, excess viscosityΔ Inη and excess Gibbs energy of activationΔG* E of viscous flow have been calculated and have been used to predict molecular interactions occurring in present binary mixtures. The results show the existence of specific interactions in MMA + aromatic hydrocarbons, MMA + haloalkanes, and MMA + primary amines.

Notes: Abstract We compute velocity and the corresponding energy changes due to non-resonant interactions of protons with Alfvén solitons. It is seen that the protons heat in the perpendicular direction but associated with this is a cooling in the parallel direction.

Notes: Abstract Quality management standard BS5740/ISO9001 is a key technology for UK and Europe in the 1990s. This paper shows that the relevance of BS5750/ISO9001 is limited and suggests that standards bodies must develop and endorse new standards to ensure that software quality improvement programmes continue to be adopted by the information technology industry.

Notes: Abstract The uptake of amino acids from a chemically defined medium was determined for various species ofFusobacterium. Reference strains utilized a wider range and higher levels of amino acids than clinical isolates. Among the acidic and basic amino acids, arginine, histidine, and glutamate were used by most species. In general, nonpolar neutral amino acids such as alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, proline, and methionine were poorly utilized. Apart from glycine and tyrosine, the neutral but polar amino acids such as serine, cysteine, and asparagine were incorporated at significantly high levels. ThusFusobacterium species, unlike several Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria, have the capacity to utilize both free amino acids and peptides as energy sources and may partly account for the wide distribution of these species in areas of tissue degradation.

Notes: Abstract A study of the uptake of amino acids and its influence by a peptide source was carried out withFusobacterium varium as a convenient representative of the genus. Reference strains and a clinical isolate had similar amino acid uptake profiles, but most amino acids were incorporated at lower concentrations by the latter. In general, high levels of serine, asparagine, glutamate, cysteine, and arginine were incorporated by all species. Histidine, lysine, threonine, and aspartate were taken up at lower levels, whereas the nonpolar neutral amino acids such as alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, glycine, proline, phenylalanine, and methionine were poorly metabolized. Yeast extract, as a source of peptides, stimulated the uptake of several amino acids such as histidine and glutamate, whereas others such as methionine, threonine, and asparagine were repressed. The incorporation of some amino acids such as aspartate, ornithine, lysine, and arginine was unaffected by the presence of peptides. Equimolar nitrogen concentrations of amino acids or ammonia could not replace the peptide requirement, emphasizing the importance of peptides as an energy source. The limited capacity ofFusobacterium spp. to hydrolyze proteins increased approximately 30% in the presence of the proteolytic species,Porphyromonas gingivalis, and may represent one bacterial interaction in which peptides may become available toFusobacterium species in vivo.

Notes: Abstract A chemically defined medium (BGDM) has been developed specifically forBacteroides gingivalis. The medium contains 4 amino acids, 5 mineral salts, cysteine hydrochloride as a reducing agent, and the growth factors hemin and menadione. Eight strains ofB. gingivalis have been subcultured repeatedly in this medium with no apparent changes in colonial or cellular morphology. The metabolic end products of strains grown in this medium were reproducible and yielded patterns similar to those produced by cells cultured in complex media. The growth rates were about 50% slower than those of cells grown in a complex medium, and the growth rate constants ranged between 0.013 and 0.067 H−1. When the defined medium was supplemented with protein hydrolysates such as trypticase, proteose peptone, bactocasitone, or yeast extract, at concentrations up to 1.0%, growth increased. No such growth increase was observed in the medium supplemented with casamino acids. Thus a minimal medium can be formulated by adding one of the growth-enhancing protein hydrolysates to the defined medium at varying concentrations depending upon the growth yield required.

Description: ITER cryolines (CLs) are complex network of vacuum-insulated multi and single process pipe lines, distributed in three different areas at ITER site. The CLs will support different operating loads during the machine life-time; either considered as nominal, occasional or exceptional. The major loads, which form the design basis are inertial, pressure, temperature, assembly, magnetic, snow, wind, enforced relative displacement and are put together in loads specification. Based on the defined load combinations, conceptual estimation of reaction loads have been carried out for the lines located inside the Tokamak building. Adequate numbers of embedded plates (EPs) per line have been defined and integrated in the building design. The finalization of building EPs to support the lines, before the detailed design, is one of the major design challenges as the usual logic of the design may alter. At the ITER project level, it was important to finalize EPs to allow adequate design and timely...

Description: System of Cryoline and Cryo-distribution for ITER has matured to a stage of preliminary design with the advent of industrial associates. Starting from the cold power source, the system of Cryoline and Cryo-distribution transfers the controlled cold power through a large network to the superconducting magnets and cryopumps. The functional responsibility also includes very high reliability and availability with respect to the operation of the ITER machine. Following the completion of conceptual design, it was necessary to perform a detailed engineering study of the complete network of distribution system in totality, before entering in to the industrial phase. This is to ensure the functional responsibility of the system. Value engineering in the area of distribution boxes including interfacing Cryolines has been performed in order to access the integrated reliable performance with respect to the overall cryogenic system, reducing the risk transferred to the industrial partners. Th...
