Description:
The quantitative analysis of the interactions sea-air shows that two main seasons exist in the central elliptic area of the Caribbean Sea: the sunny winter-spring season and the rainy summer-autumn season. The first is from December to May characterized by a semi-arid climate with sunshine, high evaporation, small precipitation and runoff and high surface salinity; the second is from June to November characterized by a more semihumid climate with cloudiness, small evaporation, high precipitation and runoff and lower surface salinity. The warmwatercirculation is best described by the spreading of the Subtropical Undercurrent characterized by the narrow intermediate salinity maximum in 50-200 m. The boundary between the warmwater- and the coldwater-spheres is best fixed by the oxygen-minimum in 300 to 600 m depth sloping from S to N like the core of the undercurrent. The whole paper forms an abstract of some chapters of the author's extensive study on the "Stratification and Circulation in the Antillen-Caribbean Basins", which in 1964 is published by the Lamont Geological Laboratory as No. 2 of the "Vema Research Series".
