    Notes: Abstract The structure of the title compound [Cu2(bipym)3(N3)2(CH3OH)2](CF3SO3)2(CH3OH)2 has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The crystals are triclinic, space group P1, with a = 8.1844(5), b = 11.0253(6), c = 12.9089(7) Å, α = 80.249(4), β, = 74.933(5), γ = 74.001(4)°, and Z = 1. The structure consists of a dinuclear Cu(II) unit formed of two didentate bipym ligands, one bis-didentate bipym ligand, two azido anions, and two coordinating methanol molecules. The Cu(II) atom is elongated tetragonally surrounded by two nitrogens of the didentate bipym ligand, one nitrogen of the bis-didentate ligand, and one nitrogen of the azido anion forming the equatorial plane with one nitrogen of the bis-didentate ligand and an oxygen atom of the methanol molecule as the axial atoms. A noncoordinating triflate anion and an additional methanol molecule are also in the crystal lattice and have a hydrogen bond distance of 2.801(3) Å with an angle of 157(4)°. The cations link by O – H ··· N bonds into infinite chains running in the c-direction.

    Notes: Abstract The compound [Fe(bipym)33](CF3SO3)2 (in which bipym = 2,2′-bipyrimidine) crystallizes in the space group P21/c, with a = 13.7641(11), b = 18.7557(19), c = 12.3627(11) Å, β = 103.085(8)° and Z = 4. The low-spin Fe(II) atom is octahedrally surrounded by six nitrogen atoms of three bipyrimidine groups with Fe—N distances that vary from 1.968(4) to 1.975(4) å. In the far-infrared region the Fe—N vibrations are observed at 359 and 372 cm-1.

    Notes: Abstract Reaction of Cu(II) triflate with an excess of 2-aminopyrimidine (ampym) in ethanol followed by slow crystallization results in a most unusual crystal lattice, which can be considered as consisting of two interpenetrating sublattices. The compound analyzes as [Cu(ampym)2(H2O)2(CF3SO3)2(ampym)4]. Crystal data: Triclinic, P $$\overline 1$$ , a = 7.6179(5), b = 11.4311(14), c = 11.8373(13) Å, α = 84.098(9), β = 79.998(7), γ = 84.253(8)°, Vol = 1010.151(8) Å, Z = 1, Dcalc = 1.592 g/cm3. One part of the lattice consists of the unprecendented linear chain of neutral ampym molecules; the chain is built up by Watson–Crick type bis-hydrogen bonds between imine N atoms and N-H groups of the NH2. This ampym chain is apparently stabilized by the other part in the crystal lattice, which can best be described by starting from the centrosymmetric trans-CuII(ampym)2(H2O)2 ion (Cu-N = 2.01 Å; Cu-O = 1.94 Å). This Cu ion is coordinated by two monodentate ampym ligands, two water molecules and two semi-coordinating triflate oxygen atoms. The Cu chromophore is held in position by hydrogen bonding towards a triflate ion (two times for symmetry reasons), and (again two times) a free ampym ligand. The triflate ion bridges a water hydrogen to a next-neighboring free ampym ligand. The noncoordinating ampym molecule has four bonding sites, of which two are used in H-bonding with the coordinated ligand, one with the triflate and the last one with the water hydrogen atom. The noncoordination ampym molecules in this sublattice finally form aromatic stacks with coordinated ampym and with itself in pairs (ring-ring distance 3.77-3.80 Å).

    Notes: Abstract The title compound, catena-[bis(azido-N)-copper(II)-μ(bis(2-benzimidazolyl)butane), [Cu(C18H18N4)(N3)2]n, was obtained from the reaction of the ligand bis(2-benzimidazolyl)butane and Cu(N3)2. The x-ray crystal structure is reported. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with a = 8.2524(10), b = 12.765(5), c = 9.1125(15) Å, β = 106.423(12)°, Z = 2. The Cu(II) ions are square-planar coordinated with trans-oriented end-on binding azido ligands. The structure is a polynuclear chain with the benzimidazole bridging at each end. In addition a N(ligand)-H···N(azido) H-bridge [N(ligand)···N(azido) = 2.994(7) Å] is present, resulting in a pseudo 2-dimensional lattice. The characteristic azido infrared vibrations are found at 2060 and 2077 cm−1 (νas(N3)) and 1284 and 1297 cm−1 (ν(N3)).

    Notes: Abstract. The cellular distribution and processing pathways of two platinum compounds, modeling the antitumor drug cisplatin (cDDP) in human osteosarcoma (U2-OS) cells is reported. A [Pt(en)Cl2] entity has been covalently linked to a carboxyfluorescein diacetate (CFDA) moiety and to a dinitrophenyl (DNP) moiety. The two different constructs were administered to living cell cultures that were analyzed using digital fluorescence microscopy. The non-fluorescent CFDA construct becomes fluorescent after cellular uptake and subsequent acetate hydrolysis by esterases, and is therefore suitable to monitor platinum in living cells; the DNP construct can be visualized by immunocytochemistry and consequently serves as a control. Both complexes were readily internalized by the cells, and localized throughout the whole cell. After 2–3 h the complex accumulated in the nucleus, but 6–8 h after incubation a punctuate staining of a cytoplasmic region was observed, that persisted and became more pronounced after 24 h. The overall fluorescence in the cell decreased over time, implying a secretion of the platinum complex. Surprisingly, the accumulation remained visible after 72 h. Co-localization experiments with a Golgi apparatus-selective stain indicate the involvement of Golgi vesicles in intracellular processing of cisplatin-derived complexes. Immunocytochemical studies, using the DNP derivative, resulted in very similar images as obtained with the CFDA construct. CFDA-boc (a non-platinum-containing fluorescein derivative) was used as control: a faint staining throughout the whole cell was observed. Cisplatin-resistant U2-OS/Pt cells showed staining patterns very similar to the U2-OS cells using both platinum constructs. This study illustrates that only a very small portion of the platinum complex eventually remains bound to DNA, as after 24 h no significant fluorescence could be observed in the nucleus. Cisplatin-derived complexes with fluorescent tags afford a new insight into the cellular processing of these complexes and therefore may contribute to further unraveling of the mechanism of platinum antitumor complexes.

    Notes: Summary Coordination compounds having the general formula ML2Ox are described, with Ox = oxalato dianion; M = Ni, Co and Zn; 1 = water and imidazoles. The compounds are characterised by chemical analyses, i.r., far-i.r., Raman, ligand field and e.s.r. spectra. Magnetic susceptibility measurements at low temperatures indicate a polymeric structure of ant i-ferromagnetically coupled M2+ ions. All physical measurements agree with a polymeric structure built up by oxalate ions as tetradentate bridging ligands forming one-dimensional linear chains. Flach metal ion is coordinated by four oxalate oxygens and two donor atoms (N or O) in distorted octahedron. For M = Ni, the magnetic susceptibility measurements can be best described with the Heisenberg model including a zero-field splitting; for M = Co, the Ising model gives the best results. The exchange coupling constants, IJ1, vary from 9-13 cm−1.

    Notes: Summary Compounds with the composition CuXL, in which X=Cl− or Br− and L=R,S-1-amino-2-propanol andS-1-amino-2-propanol, both with deprotonated hydroxy groups, are described. Magnetic measurements strongly suggest these compounds to have a tetrameric cubane-type structure with a Cu4O4 core. The racemic and optically-active compounds show a different magnetic behaviour, most likely originating from different cluster types for the isomers. The results of the i.r., f.i.r. and e.s.r. spectra are in good agreement with the proposed cluster types.

    Notes: Summary The synthesis of coordination compounds of formula M(viz)n(A)2 is described, where viz. =N-vinylimidazole, M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn or Cd, A = ClO 4 − , BF 4 − or NO 3 − , and n varies from 3 to 6, depending upon the particular combination of cation and anion. The compounds are easily prepared in ethanol from the hydrated metal(II) salts and the ligand and the products were characterized using i.r., ligand-field, far-i.r. and e.p.r. spectra in conjunction with x-ray powder diagrams and magnetic techniques. Octahedral cations [M(viz)6]2+ are formed in many cases, although square planar species Cu(viz)4(A)2 and tetrahedral species [M(viz)4]2+ for M = Co and Zn are also found. Compared withN-alkylimidazole ligands, viz behaves differently in some cases, resulting in special effects in the crystal packing, and can be related to the quite rigid ligand structure. The “pyridine-type” N-atom of the imidazole ring appears to be coordinated; in all compounds no evidence is found for C=C double bond coordination.
