Notes: Abstract A new model of the upper tracheobronchial tree is proposed to account for the three-dimensional nature of the airway system. In addition to the tube length, the tube diameter, and the branching angle, the model includes information on the orientation angle of each tube relative to its parent tube. The orientation angle, defined as the angle between two successive bifurcations, is useful for calculating the gravitational inclination of each tube. The information on orientation angle is further used to construct a binary coding system for identifying individual tubes in the airway tree. The proposed model is asymmetrical, but the same principles can be readily used to construct a symmetrical one.

Notes: Abstract: Higher-order approximation techniques for estimating stochastic parameter of the non-homogeneous Poisson (NHP) model are presented. The NHP model is characterized by a two-parameter cumulative probability distribution function (CDF) of sediment displacement. Those two parameters are the temporal and spatial intensity functions, physically representing the inverse of the average rest period and step length of sediment particles, respectively. Difficulty of estimating the parameters has, however, restricted the applications of the NHP model. The approximation techniques are proposed to address such problem. The basic idea of the method is to approximate a model involving stochastic parameters by Taylor series expansion. The expansion preserves certain higher-order terms of interest. Using the experimental (laboratory or field) data, one can determine the model parameters through a system of equations that are simplified by the approximation technique. The parameters so determined are used to predict the cumulative distribution of sediment displacement. The second-order approximation leads to a significant reduction of the CDF error (of the order of 47%) compared to the first-order approximation. Error analysis is performed to evaluate the accuracy of the first- and second-order approximations with respect to the experimental data. The higher-order approximations provide better estimations of the sediment transport and deposition that are critical factors for such environment as spawning gravel-bed.

Notes: Abstract We report low threshold and high speed 1.55 μm complex-coupled distributed feedback (CCDFB) lasers with gain coupling induced by a current blocking grating. Excellent device performance has been demonstrated with a record-low threshold of 5.6 mA, a large modulation bandwidth of 11 GHz and useful high temperature operation up to 95°C.

Notes: Abstract The dark currents of InSb metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) charge injection devices (CIDs) in the temperature range 30 to 120K are studied. It is found that a thermal-generating process dominates the dark current in the high temperature region. When the device is under small bias voltage, a bump in the trap emission current appears below 70K. This current is due to carrier capture and emission processes of a hole trap state located in the bulk material, and the measured activation energy is 50meV. For larger bias conditions, the band-to-band tunnelling current gradually overcomes the trap emission current. It smears out the bump in the trap emission current, and shows a slightly temperature-dependent behaviour in the plot. The effects of field electrodes are also studied. It is found from experimental results that the edge of the electric field around the device periphery plays an important role in the band-to-band tunnelling process, and a field electrode with suitable bias can improve the dark current response drastically.

Notes: Abstract The fatigue fracture behavior of chlor-alkali monolayer membranes is investigated under a condition similar to the membrane electrolysis cell service environment, i.e., at 86°C in brine solution. The linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) approach, i.e., da/dN vs. AK, is implemented in this study. It is found that the fatigue crack propagation behavior of the chlor-alkali membranes can be successfully characterized via the LEFM technique. The fatigue fracture surfaces of the membranes are also investigated using stereo-optical microscopy and are found to show typical fatigue striation patterns. Detailed experimental procedures for preparing and testing of the membranes are presented.

Notes: Abstract We introduce the notion of (0,m)-Codazzi tensors relative to an affine connection which extends the well known concept for m = 2. On compact Riemannian surfaces of genus γ we determine the dimension of the R-vector space of traceless Codazzi tensors, which depends on m and γ only, additionally we extend these result for genus zero. We give some exemplary applications to submanifolds in affine and in Riemannian geometry and to Weyl geometries.

Notes: Abstract We introduce the concept of a relative Tchebychev hypersurface which extends that of affine spheres in equiaffine geometry and also that of centroaffine Tchebychev hypersurfaces and give partial local and global classifications for this new class. Our tools concern a new operator and interesting properties of the traceless part of the cubic form.
