    Description: Core-complex formation driven by lithospheric extension is a first-order process of heat and mass transfer in the Earth. Core-complex structures have been recognized in the continents, at slow- and ultraslow-spreading mid-ocean ridges, and at continental rifted margins; in each of these settings, extension has driven the exhumation of deep crust and/or upper mantle. The style of extension and the magnitude of core-complex exhumation are determined fundamentally by rheology: (1) Coupling between brittle and ductile layers regulates fault patterns in the brittle layer; and (2) viscosity of the flowing layer is controlled dominantly by the synextension geotherm and the presence or absence of melt. The pressure-temperature-time-fluid-deformation history of core complexes, investigated via field- and modeling-based studies, reveals the magnitude, rate, and mechanisms of advection of heat and material from deep to shallow levels, as well as the consequences for the chemical and physical evolution of the lithosphere, including the role of core-complex development in crustal differentiation, global element cycles, and ore formation. In this review, we provide a survey of ~40 yr of core-complex literature, discuss processes and questions relevant to the formation and evolution of core complexes in continental and oceanic settings, highlight the significance of core complexes for lithosphere dynamics, and propose a few possible directions for future research.

    Description: The juxtaposition of domains of shortening and extension at different scales in orogens has fueled many debates about driving forces and tectonic interpretations, including timing of deformation. At the orogen scale, gravitational collapse and mass transfer from orogenic plateaux to forelands explain some of these juxtapositions. At a regional scale, structures in gneiss domes are commonly contractional yet are coeval with regional extension and denudation. Here we use three-dimensional numerical experiments to show that crustal flow in orogenic domains does not necessarily conform to plate motion. We document contractional crustal flow associated with the formation of a gneiss dome in an orogenic pull-apart setting where localized extension and crustal thinning focus the exhumation of deep crust. We show that the flow field results in a complex strain pattern in which an extensional strain regime that is collinear with the direction of plate motion is partitioned into the shallow crust, whereas contractional structures and fabrics at a high angle to the direction of imposed transport develop in the deep crust. Advective mass transfer across regions of contrasting yet coeval strain regimes leads to a polyphase tectonic history. We observe structural features remarkably similar to those documented in some natural gneiss domes such as the Montagne Noire, which developed in a dextral pull-apart domain at the southern margin of the French Massif Central.

    Description: Im Kontext der funktionalen Entmischung wurde das Wachstum des Pendlerverkehrs am Beispiel der Region Nordwestschweiz thematisiert. Es bestätigte sich, dass die interkommunale Pendlermobilität stark zugenommen hat. Der Anteil der interkommunalen Pendler stieg zwischen 1970 und 1990 von 33% auf 52%. Trotz der Bevölkerungssuburbanisierung dominiert der interkommunale Pendlerverkehr innerhalb und in die Agglomeration Basel, da sich das Arbeitsplatzangebot weiterhin in der Agglomeration Basel konzentriert. Im interkommunalen Pendlerverkehr ist in den 80er Jahren der öffentliche Verkehr stärker gewachsen als der motorisierte Indidividualverkehr. Dies im Unterschied zum starken Wachstum des MIV in den 70er Jahren. In der Stadt Basel benutzten 1990 57% aller intrakommunalen Pendler ein öffentliches Verkehrsmittel. Dieser Anteil betrug 1990 in den ländlich-peripheren Gemeinden durchschnittlich 3%. Um dem Trend der zunehmenden Trennung zwischen Wohnen und Arbeiten entgegenzuwirken, sind einerseits Massnahmen zur Steigerung der Wohnstandortqualität in den Zentrumsgemeinden zu ergreifen. Andererseits kann längerfristig die Zunahme des Pendlerverkehrs im allgemeinen und des motorisierten Individualverkehrs im speziellen nur durch Kostenwahrheit im Verkehr (Road-Pricing usw.) und durch restriktive Massnahmen in den vom Verkehr betroffenen Gemeinden verhindert werden.
