    Notes: Carbon isotope composition (δ13C) was measured in a glasshouse experiment with N2-fixing and NO3–- or NH4+-fed Casuarina equisetifolia Forst. & Forst plants, both under well-watered and drought conditions. The abundance of 13C was higher (more positive δ13C) for NH4+- than for NO3– -grown plants and was lowest for N2-fixing plants. NH4+-fed plants had more leaf area and dry weight and higher water use efficiency (on a biomass basis) than N2- and NO3–-grown plants and had lower water consumption than plants supplied with NO3–, either with high or low water supply. Specific leaf areas and leaf area ratios were higher with NH4+ than with NO3– or N2 as the N source. The difference observed in δ13C between plants grown with different N sources was higher than that predicted by theory and was not in the right direction (NH4+-grown plants with a more negative δ13C) to be explained by differences in plant composition and engagement of the various carboxylation reactions. The more positive δ13C in NH4+- than in NO3–-grown plants is probably due to a decreased ratio of stomatal to carboxylation conductances, which accounts for the lower water cost of C assimilation in NH4+-grown plants.

    Description: This paper describes the characterization of the light hole, also known as the lumen, in implanted stents affected by restenosis processes using bioimpedance (BI) as a biomarker. The presented approach will enable real-time monitoring of lumens in implanted stents. The basis of the work hereby reported is the fact that neointimal tissues involved in restenosis can be detected and measured through their impedance properties, namely, conductivity and permittivity. To exploit these properties, a 4-electrode setup for BI measurement is proposed. This setup allows study of the influence of the various tissues involved in restenosis fat, muscle, fibre, and endothelium, together with the blood, on the BI value at several frequencies. In addition, BI simulation tests were performed using the electric physics module available in COMSOL Multiphysics®. Interestingly, fat constitutes the most influential layer on the value of impedance (measured in kΩ/μm—magnitude change per micrometre of lumen occlusion). A case study using a standard stent is also presented. In this study, where the involved tissues and blood were simultaneously considered, we conducted an analysis for stable and vulnerable plaques in restenosis test situations. In this regard, the proposed method is useful to test the stent obstruction and detect potential dangerous cases due to nonstable fat accumulation.

    Description: This research presents a study of environmental monitoring at different sampling sites from the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Toluca (MAVT), Mexico, using mosses (Leskea angustata(Tayl.) andFabronia ciliaris(Brid.)) and soil samples. The epiphytic mosses and soils were sampled in two campaigns within two periods of the year, a rainy and dry-cold season. The selected sampling sites included urban regions (UR), transitional regions (TR), and protected natural areas (PA). The samples were analyzed by the Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) to determine As, Cr, Hg, and Se principally. However, due to the versatility of the analytic technique used, other elements including Cs, Co, Sc, Sb, Rb, Ce, La, Eu, and Yb were also detected. Statistical analysis (As, Cr, Hg, and Se) was carried out with principal components and cluster analysis methods; this revealed that a good correlation exists between metal content in mosses and the degree of pollution in the areas sampled. The obtained results in mosses showed that the concentrations of As, Cr, Co, Cs, Rb, Ce, La, and Yb increased with respect to the concentrations obtained during the first sampling, whereas Se, Sc, Sb and Eu, concentrations were decreased. For As and Hg, the concentrations were similar in both sampling periods. The soil samples present the most significant concentration.
