    Notes: Apothecia of a species of Unguicularia were found on fallen leaves of oilseed rape from November 1989 to April 1990, and from January to July 1991. On the basis of the limited literature on this genus, these apothecia were tentatively identified as Unguicularia cfr. raripila, a species not previously reported in the UK, or on oilseed rape. Although saprophytic, it is of significance in oilseed rape crops, as its ascospores are similar in size and shape to those of the important pathogen Pyrenopeziza brassicae, the cause of light leaf spot. The ascospores of both species can be dispersed either as single spores or in groups, although those of U. cfr. raripila are more often dispersed in groups. Due to confusion in distinguishing the ascospores of these two species, it is likely that studies of the epidemiology of light leaf spot using spore samplers have overestimated the numbers of ascospores of P. brassicae dispersed, and hence their potential contribution to epidemics. Apothecia of U. cfr. raripila were abundant in the spring of both 1990 and 1991, but those of P. brassicae were much more rare. The species of Unguicularia is described.

    Notes: : As part of a comprehensive water quality investigation on the Fox Chain of Lakes during May to October 1975, water samples from the Chain and Cedar Lake (reference) at 25 locations were collected weekly or bi-weekly to determine the species and densities of algae. The results have been evaluated for algal composition, density, and succession for each location.Sixty-four algal species were recovered from 414 samples. The number of species per sampling location varied from 10 at Channel Lake and Lake Marie to 26 on Fox Lake (main) and Grass Lake. Blue green algae were predominant and occurred at 25 of the 25 sampling stations. They consisted mainly of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. The only flagellate of importance was Ceratium hirundinella, and significant concentrations of this organism were limited to Channel Lake and Lake Catherine. The only green alga bloom was created by Ulothrix variabilis on the waters of Pistakee Lake. Diatoms were quite significant on the shallower water bodies.Algal densities ranged from about 25 to 14,000 cts/ml. The highest count occurred on Mineola Bay. Other high counts (〉10,000 cts/ml) observed were waters taken from Channel Lake, Grass Lake, and Fox Lake (main). In Grass Lake, 60 percent of the collections had algal densities in excess of 2,000 cts/ml. Most of these were the diatom Cyclotella meneghiniana.

    Notes: Abstract The influences of both hole cold expansion and interference-fit fasteners for extending the fatigue life of multi-layer aluminium alloy joint specimens under variable-amplitude loading have been examined experimentally. Improvements in fatigue life were markedly dependent on the degree of load transfer in the specimen joint. Secondary bending in the joint also had a major influence, reducing the effectiveness of these life improvement techniques. Depending on the joint configuration, improvements in fatigue life ranged from nothing at all to a factor of about 40. Fretting appeared to be involved in the initiation of all cracks and where this occurred on faying surfaces only small, if any, improvements in fatigue life were obtained.
