    Notes: A borehole sparker seismic source enclosed in a semi-flexible tube has been developed to produce a short compressional seismic pulse with a frequency content in the range 250 Hz to 3.5 kHz with a peak power at 570 Hz. The pulse shape and frequency content are shown to be a function of the input power, the diameter of the spark chamber, the salinity of the electrolyte, the material of the spark chamber and the electrode configuration. When in a borehole, the source produces a vertically polarized shear wave but, being similar to a small explosive charge does not allow phase reversal as a means of identifying the shear wave in the received pulse train. The source is shown to be ideal for tomographic imaging surveys because of its repetitive nature, high frequency content and reliability. Very high resolution seismic reflection surveys are also shown to be possible under favourable circumstances.

    Notes: VLF wave impedance measurements have been successfully used to detect air-filled drainage galleries near the town of Alcala, Spain. The galleries are detectable by H-polarization electric field measurements due to the electric field anomalies associated with the galleries and overlying gravel deposits. The forced deviation of the primary current flowlines around the 2D void results in a higher-than-normal apparent resistivity and a relative phase low above the gallery.The findings support earlier theoretical predictions that at very low frequencies (VLFs), galvanic current effects may dominate over vortex currents in moderately conductive terrains. Theoretical modelling confirmed that for a resistive target no detectable E-polarization response can be expected from either magnetic or electric field measurements since current line deviations and vortex effects are negligible under such circumstances.The results demonstrate the importance of using at least two orthogonal VLF transmitters in order that anomalies arising from both galvanic and inductive effects may be identified, irrespective of orientation.

    Notes: Gravity profiles can be computed by summing flux lines uniformly radiating from source elements within a density distribution. Digital computations are performed efficiently, irregular density distributions modeled, and alterations easily made to the model to alter the profile by recomputation of only the altered elements. The concept applies to both two- and three-dimensional models and the corresponding datum plane contours. Two-dimensional computations are described and illustrated.

    Notes: Erianthus arundinaceus has a number of important agronomic traits including good ratooning ability, tolerance to both drought and water logging, disease resistance and vigour and is of interest as a potential source of parental germplasm to sugarcane breeders. However, to date, attempts to produce fertile hybrids between sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) and E. arundinaceus have been unsuccessful. Microsatellite markers that generated genus-specific markers and were highly polymorphic within sugarcane were identified. The microsatellite markers and 5S rDNA PCR were used to screen intergeneric (F1) clones from Saccharum officinarum×E. arundinaceus crosses, and two Saccharum backcross progeny (BC1) populations derived from crosses between selected F1 clones and sugarcane (Saccharum spp.), to identify genuine Saccharum spp. BC1 progeny. The 5S rDNA PCR marker and highly polymorphic microsatellites with Erianthus-specific bands confirmed the F1 parent of the two putative BC1 populations was a S. officinarum×E. arundinaceus hybrid and allowed the identification of the genuine BC1 progeny from selfs of the F1 parent. This is the first verification of BC1 progeny from an F1 intergeneric hybrid x sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) clone with molecular markers and confirms the introgression of E. arundinaceus germplasm into sugarcane. It should now be possible to exploit genes of value from E. arundinaceus in sugarcane breeding programmes.

Cabora Bassa, a new impoundment in the Middle Zambezi River, was closed in December 1974, filling rapidly to 12m below full supply by May 1975.The lake, with five basins, lies along a west–east axis almost parallel to prevailing south-easterly winds. Limnological records, from several stations along the lake axis, indicated homoiothermal conditions until September, the hot dry season. From then until records ceased in December, thermoclines and oxyclines were present in the deeper eastern basins. Hydrogen sulphide was recorded in hypolimnial waters towards the end of the year. Open water of the shallow, wind- and wave-swept eastern basins remained oxygenated throughout the year.Water transparency increased fivefold from April to December, increasing too from east to west. pH was alkaline becoming more acid in cool winter months and in bottom waters of stratified basins. Conductivity ranged from 95 to 119 °S cm−1 with higher values in shallow lake margins. Chemical content of surface waters showed little seasonal or spatial variation and was, in general, comparable with pre-impoundment levels.Duration of the initial ‘productive phase’ will probably be shorter than Kariba due to more rapid lake water exchange but indications are that productivity will be higher in the maturation phase.

    Notes: Stem water storage capacity and diurnal patterns of water use were studied in five canopy trees of a seasonal tropical forest in Panama. Sap flow was measured simultaneously at the top and at the base of each tree using constant energy input thermal probes inserted in the sapwood. The daily stem storage capacity was calculated by comparing the diurnal patterns of basal and crown sap flow. The amount of water withdrawn from storage and subsequently replaced daily ranged from 4 kg d–1 in a 0·20-m-diameter individual of Cecropia longipes to 54 kg d–1 in a 1·02-m-diameter individual of Anacardium excelsum, representing 9–15% of the total daily water loss, respectively. Ficus insipida, Luehea seemannii and Spondias mombin had intermediate diurnal water storage capacities. Trees with greater storage capacity maintained maximum rates of transpiration for a substantially longer fraction of the day than trees with smaller water storage capacity. All five trees conformed to a common linear relationship between diurnal storage capacity and basal sapwood area, suggesting that this relationship was species-independent and size-specific for trees at the study site. According to this relationship there was an increment of 10 kg of diurnal water storage capacity for every 0·1 m2 increase in basal sapwood area. The diurnal withdrawal of water from, and refill of, internal stores was a dynamic process, tightly coupled to fluctuations in environmental conditions. The variations in basal and crown sap flow were more synchronized after 1100 h when internal reserves were mostly depleted. Stem water storage may partially compensate for increases in axial hydraulic resistance with tree size and thus play an important role in regulating the water status of leaves exposed to the large diurnal variations in evaporative demand that occur in the upper canopy of seasonal lowland tropical forests.
