Notes: Summary Incubation of calf brain membrane preparations with the plant lectins, concanavalin A and wheat germ agglutinin did not inhibit neurotransmitter receptor binding sites directly. Plant lectins did however protect these sites against subsequent trypsin digestion suggesting that neurotransmitter binding sites may be associated with glycoprotein structures.

Notes: Abstract Objective: Disopyramide and salicylic acid were used as model compounds to characterize racial differences in binding of drugs by alpha1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) and albumin, respectively. Drug-free plasma was collected from 29 healthy volunteers (15 white, 14 black). Disopyramide and salicylic acid unbound fractions (fu) in plasma were determined by equilibrium dialysis using 14C-disopyramide and 14C-salicylic acid. Results: Disopyramide unbound fractions were significantly higher in blacks than whites (0.131 vs 0.113) as were salicylic acid unbound fractions (0.053 vs 0.048). When unbound fractions were corrected for AGP and albumin concentration, racial differences were no longer present. Conclusion: Many drugs which bind to AGP and/or albumin may exhibit racial differences in unbound fractions. However, these differences are likely explained by differences in protein concentrations rather than differences in the number of binding sites on the protein or racial differences in affinity of the protein for drugs.

Notes: Abstract A fine-resolution primitive equation numerical model is constructed for the Iberian continental shelf and slope region, with open boundaries to the north, south and west. The model is forced by climatological wind fields and relaxed at the surface to climatological temperature and salinity fields. A series of numerical experiments is conducted to investigate the influence of the open boundary conditions. The numerical results include coastal upwelling in summer and a poleward current in winter. The effects of advection of Mediterranean Water and eastern North Atlantic Central Water feature in the circulation. Qualitative comparisons are made with observations.

Notes: Abstract A computer program has been written to calculate realistic ultrasonic fields in solids. The program calculates the field due to a transducer coupled to the solid through either a fluid medium such as water or a solid medium such as a plastic shoe with a thin layer of fluid couplant. In this technique the transducer face is divided into many small areas, each of which is assumed to be a source of spherical waves. A ray is traced from each source point, through the coupling medium, and into the solid to the requested field point. The vector sum of the fields of each of the rays is then calculated to find the total incident field at that point for a particular frequency. The calculations have been compared to the fields predicted by the models of Thompson and coworkers [1, 2] and with experimental results.

Notes: Abstract Multiparasitism studies were conducted in the laboratory between the egg-larval polyembryonic parasitoid Copidosoma floridanum (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) and the larval endoparasitoid Microplitis demolitor Wilkinson (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in the mutual host Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Most multiparasitized hosts produced either a C. floridanum brood or died without any parasitoid emergence. Most multiparasitized hosts underwent supernumerary molting; however, multiparasitized hosts that produced a C. floridanum brood exhibited growth characteristics associated with C. floridanum parasitism while multiparasitized hosts that died exhibited growth characteristics more typical of M. demolitor parasitism. Multiparasitized hosts that produced a C. floridanum brood increased in weight, and usually exhibited the behavioral and morphological characteristics associated with initiation of metamorphosis. In contrast, multiparasitized hosts that ultimately died gained little weight and exhibited no characteristics associated with metamorphosis. M. demolitor progeny died in multiparasitized hosts as eggs or first instar larvae, but no direct evidence was found to indicate that physical attack by C. floridanum precocious larvae was responsible for their elimination.
