    Notes: Abstract A basic trypsin-subtilisin inhibitor has been isolated from the egg white of marine turtle (Caretta caretta Linn.) and purified to homogeneity by gel filtration followed by ion-exchange chromatography. It has a single polypeptide chain of 117 amino acid residues, having a molecular weight of 13,600. It lacks methionine and tryptophan. Its isoelectric point is atpH 10.0 and the sedimentation coefficient (s20,w) value of 1.62 S is independent of protein concentration. It has a Stokes radius of 18.8 Å, an intrinsic viscosity of 0.048 dl g−1 and a diffusion coefficient of 10.17×10−7 cm2 sec−1. Its fluorescence emission spectrum is similar to that of free tyrosine and the bimolecular quencing rate constant of its tyrosine residues with acrylamide is 3.15×109 M−1 sec−1. The inhibitor strongly inhibits both trypsin and subtilisin by forming enzyme-inhibitor complexes at a molar ratio of unity. The nature of inhibition toward both enzymes is not temporary. It has independent binding sites for inhibition of trypsin and subtilisin. Chemical modification with tetranitromethane suggests the presence of three tyrosine residues on the surface of the inhibitor molecule.

    Notes: Summary The nett gain or loss of total soil nitrogen was worked out from a long-term manure and fertilizer experiment conducted for seven years and still continuing at Ranchi Agricultural College, Kanke, Ranchi India. The total nitrogen in soil showed a deficit balance where lower and unbalanced doses of fertilizers were applied. Increasing levels of fertilizer combinations with lime removed the highest amount of nitrogen in intensive cropping. The nett loss was highest (95 kg/ha) in case of control, at 100% NPK the nett gain was 37 kg N per ha, and at 150% NPK 72 kg N per ha which was the highest.

    Notes: Summary The balance sheet of phosphorus and potassium were worked out from a long term manure and fertilizer experiment conducted for eight years and is still continuing at Ranchi Agricultural College, Kanke, Ranchi, India. Increasing levels of fertilizer combination with organic manure and lime give the highest yield as well as removed the highest amount of phosphorus and potassium from the soil and gave the positive gain of soil phosphorus and potassium in intensive cropping. The highest gains of 59.0 and 278.0 kg/ha of phosphorus and potassium respectively were recorded in 150% NPK application.

    Notes: Summary An assessment of the status of available micronutrients has been made in a long term field experiment on a fixed rotation of soybean-potato-wheat at the Ranchi Agricultural College, Kanke on acid soil. Results of eight years fertilizer applications with lime has resulted in reduction of available micronutrients whereas the FYM application with balanced dose of chemical fertilizers increased the available micronutrients of soil. The maximum loss of 1.0 Zn and 13.2 Fe kg/ha respectively were from the lime treated plots with balanced dose of fertilizers and the highest gain of 0.26 Zn, 1.08 Cu, 13.2 Fe and 54.0 Mn kg/ha respectively were recorded from the FYM treated plots with balanced dose of chemical fertilizers. Organic carbon was significantly positive correlated with av. Zn & Mn, whereas av. Mn significantly negative correlated with pH. Other relationship were found to be non significant.

    Notes: Summary Potassium deficiency resulted in a increased accumulation of total phosphorus, inorganic phosphorus and sugar phosphate which suggested some interference in phosphorus metabolism predominantly beyond the sugar phosphate synthesis stage. Roots appeared to be a reservoir for accumulation of various phosphorus fractions of Japanese mint (Mentha arvensis L. var.piperascens). A higher respiration rate under potassium deficiency might be one of the factors to retard the inclusion of inorganic phosphorus into structural components, resulting in poor formation of organophosphorus compounds needed for plant growth and development. In spite of an increased essential oil content (ml/100 g dry weight) in a phosphorus deficient situation, total essential oil production (ml/plant) was low. Foliage growth, essential oil content and respiration was higher between 60 to 80 days and seemed to be associated with a high intensity of enzymatic and metabolic activity, as observed in various phosphorus fractions rising to a very high value after 80 days of crop growth.

    Notes: Summary Nutritional studies on wheat were carried out on sandy loam soils of Lucknow for a period of three years. Plant analysis for nitrogen was carried out at various growth stages of wheat plant. The important conclusions emerging out of these studies are as follows: 1 Two peak periods of nitrogen efficiencyi.e., first at tillering and second at ear-initiation stage were observed. 2 Maximum uptake of nitrogen and protein content was noted in treatment where nitrogen at 56 kg N was applied with 44.8 kg P2O5 per hectare. 3 The rate of nitrogen uptake from seedling to tillering was about 45 per cent; from jointing to ear initiation 25 per cent, and 30 per cent upto grain-formation stages in wheat plant's life cycle. 4 Best recovery of nitrogen of 53 per cent was noted in treatment where 56 kg N + 44.8 kg P2O5 per hectare was applied.

    Notes: Summary Studies on the uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus were carried out in an early paddy variety N22 on a medium loam soil at Govt. Research Farm, Kanpur. Plant samples above soil surface were collected and analysed for the above mentioned nutrients. The salient results emerging out of these investigations are as under: 1. Only one period of nitrogen and phosphorus efficiency at tillering stage was observed. 2. Maximum uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus was noted in the treatment where nitrogen at 66 kg combined with phosphates at 44 kg per hectare was applied. 3. The rate of uptake of nitrogen from seedling to tillering was about 45 per cent, from jointing to ear initiation stage 35 and 20 per cent upto maturity, whereas in case of phosphorus about 70 per cent was taken upto panicle emergence. 4. Highest recovery of nitrogen (64.8 per cent) was noted where nitrogen at 66 kg with 44 kg P2O5; per ha was applied while best recovery of phosphorus was observed in treatment where 22 kg P2O5 combined with 66 kg N per ha was applied. 5. Best rentability of nitrogen was noticed in the treatment N44 P22 whereas N66 P22 treatment showed best rentability of phosphorus.
