Notes: Abstract Experiments were carried out to measure the optical coherence of an argon laser beam in tap water, distilled water, ocean coastal water and in processed water with 3% sodium chloride added. Measurements were made for water path lengths up to 2.9 m using two different procedures. The first was Young's experiment and the second involved an optical geometry common to the Laser Doppler Velocimeter. Results showed no degradation in the normalized degree of coherence over the measured distances. However, local changes in the index of refraction did cause the interference fringes to have some motion (approximately one-fourth of a fringe width). Tests were also carried out using the Laser Doppler Velocimeter in the back-scatter mode to measure the centre line velocity of a submerged jet. Results agreed very well with independent measurements.

Notes: Abstract Little is known about how adults of the corn leafhopper,Dalbulus maidis (DeLong & Wolcott), and its congeners survive subfreezing temperatures at high elevations during the dry winter in Mexico. In the laboratory, duration of survival at −5°C was measured for four MexicanDalbulus species:D. maidis, D. elimatus (Ball),D. gelbus DeLong andD. quinquenotatus DeLong & Nault; and a closely related North American species,Baldulus tripsaci Kramer & Whitcomb. Adult leafhoppers reared under environmental conditions that simulated the beginning of the dry winter season during October in Mexico (‘October-reared’) were at least twice as tolerant of −5°C than adults reared under environmental conditions that simulated the beginning of the wet summer season during June (‘June-reared’).Dalbulus species found primarily at high elevations, such asD. elimatus, were seven times more tolerant of −5°C thanD. quinquenotatus, a species which overwinters at low to mid elevations on itsTripsacum hosts. October-rearedD. maidis adults survived relatively short periods at −5°C (LT50=8.9h) compared to October-rearedD. elimatus adults (LT50=42.3h). This suggests that in Mexico,D. maidis either overwinters in protected habitats at higher elevations or it migrates to lower, frost-free regions. October-rearedB. tripsaci adults, which overwinter in the egg stage, were intolerant of −5°C (LT50=2.6h). A conditioning period for 1 h at +5°C before and after exposure to −5°C significantly improved survival forD. maidis. Supercooling points (SCPs) were between −23 and −20°C, indicating that mortality of these leafhoppers at −5°C was due to cold shock injury rather than internal ice formation.

Notes: Abstract Cholinesterase activity of orgnophosphorus-susceptible and resistant cattle ticks (Boophilus microplus) has been determined, and found to be much lower in the resistant strain. Experiments on inhibition of tick cholinesterases by organophosphates indicated that the resistant strain possessed at least one cholinesterase which reacted more slowly with organophosphates than did the cholinesterase of the susceptible strain. The greatest difference of reaction rate occurred with compounds which give the largest factors of resistance under bio-assay conditions. The organophosphate resistant cholinesterase was also less rapidly inhibited by carbamates. A strain of the blue tick (B. decoloratus), which is resistant to arsenic and chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides, had normal levels of cholinesterase activity, and this enzyme was fully susceptible to organophosphate inhibition.

Notes: Abstract The amortized analysis is a useful tool for analyzing the time-complexity of performing a sequence of operations. The disk scheduling problem involves a sequence of requests in general. In this paper, the performances of representative disk scheduling algorithms,SSTF, SCAN, andN-StepSCAN, are analyzed in the amortized sense. A lower bound of the amortized complexity for the disk scheduling problem is also derived. According to our analysis,SCAN is not only better thanSSTF andN-StepSCAN, but also an optimal algorithm. Various authors have studied the disk scheduling problem based on some probability models and concluded that the most acceptable performance is obtained fromSCAN. Our result therefore supports their conclusion.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we propose a new parallel sorting algorithm which is based upon an operation which sorts three elements. This algorithm is similar to the parallel odd-even merge sorting algorithm proposed by Batcher, except in the latter, the basic operation sorts only two elements. The correctness of our algorithm is also proved.

Notes: Abstract In this paper a parallel algorithm to solve the stable marriage problem is given. The worst case performance of this algorithm is stated. A theoretical analysis shows that the probability of the occurrence of this worst case is extremely small. For instance, if there are sixteen men and sixteen women involved, then the probability that the worst case occurs is only 10−45. Possible future research is also discussed in this paper.

Notes: Abstract We shall present a divide-and-conquer algorithm to construct minimal spanning trees out of a set of points in two dimensions. This algorithm is based upon the concept of Voronoi diagrams. If implemented in parallel, its time complexity isO(N) and it requiresO(logN) processors whereN is the number of input points.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we will present systolic algorithms for static versions of the convex hull problem and the half-plane intersection problem. The systolic algorithms are based on a cyclic shift operation that makes each object meet all the other objects.

Notes: Abstract The TaL x ray spectrum from the electron capture decay of181W is analyzed into components characteristic of the threeL-subshells and theL 1 subshell yields atZ=73 are determined to beΩ 1=0.15±0.02,f 12=0.23±0.05 andf 13=0.32±0.02. A revised decay scheme for the decay of181W is proposed from measurements of x-ray and gamma intensities. A value of 0.97±0.08 for theK-conversion coefficient of the 153 keV transition is obtained and itsE 2/M 1 multipolarity mixing ratio,δ 2(0.25) is deduced.
