Notes: Abstract A system was developed to investigate the fate and behavior of anthropogenic organic contaminants at concentrations present in polluted subsoils and aquifers. A sequential soil column system was constructed to simulate redox conditions from methanogenic, sulfate-reducing, denitrifying, to aerobic conditions which normally occur in a leachate pollution plume. This system allowed the simulation of subsurface pollution with a range of xenobiotics and the observation of the microbial response to this contamination. After an adaptation period of up to about 7 months, 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2-nitrophenol were eliminated and perchloroethene disappeared almost completely in the methanogenic column. Toluene was partially transformed under sulfate-reducing conditions, and nearly completely in the nitrate-reducing column. The same applied to naphthalene under denitrifying and aerobic conditions. Aerobically, a fraction of benzene was transformed, and 1,4-dichlorobenzene decreased to very low residual concentrations in one system. No significant transformation of 1,1-dichloroethene could be seen.

Notes: Abstract The title complexes [Na{Ph2P(S)NP(S)Ph2}(L)] (where L=triglyme 1, or tetraglyme 2) were prepared in an aqueous/methanolic mixture by reaction of the sodium salt of Ph2P(S)NHP(S)Ph2 with the respective glyme ligand. Compound 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca with a = 19.526(5), b = 16.102(4), c = 21.168(5) Å, and Z = 8. The complex is monomeric with all four oxygen atoms of the glyme moiety coordinated to the Na+ cation. The S atoms of the Ph2P(S)NP(S)Ph2 anion are bound in a symmetrical fashion to the sodium cation. Compound 2 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P $$\bar 1$$ with a = 10.747 (3), b = 11.541(3), c = 14.932(4) Å, α = 81.28(3), β = 81.96(4), γ = 74.41(3)° and Z = 2. This structure was also found to be monomeric, with the additional oxygen of tetraglyme giving a seven coordinate rather than six coordinate Na+ cation.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a general framework for modeling and evaluating investments which involve flexibility to switch between alternative states of operation (for example, different sets of production inputs and outputs). The model employs a contingent claims pricing approach and encompasses previous real option models as special cases. We discuss practical solution techniques for the valuation problem under different assumptions regarding the cost and frequency of switching.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we establish several results concerning the asymptotic behavior of (random) infinite products of generic sequences of order-preserving mappings on intervals of an ordered Banach space. In addition to weak ergodic theorems we also obtain convergence to a unique common fixed point.

Notes: Abstract Protons andα-particles emitted in coincidence with a deep inelastic fragment produced in the reaction40Ar (280 MeV)+58Ni have been measured. From a detailed study of their in-plane angular distribution, it is shown that the bulk of the light charged particle emission can be attributed to a secondary evaporation process by the two primary deep inelastic fragments. A lowest estimate of the fragment spin (assuming total alignment perpendicular to the reaction plane) is obtained from the anisotropy of the out-of-plane angular distribution of theα-particles. For very asymmetric splitting, the heavy fragment spin estimate as obtained from theα-anisotropy measurement is consistent with the observed proton toα-particle multiplicity ratio. The results are in agreement with the hypothesis of a sticking configuration between two deformed nuclei.

Notes: Abstract We present several results concerning the asymptotic behavior of (random) infinite products of generic sequences of positive linear operators on an ordered Banach space. In addition to a weak ergodic theorem we also obtain convergence to an operator of the formf(·)η wheref is a continuous linear functional and η is a common fixed point.

Notes: Abstract Triple pulses are constructed for systems of two coupled reaction-diffusion equations with an asymptotically oscillatory single pulse. In (Alexander and Jones [1993]) it has been shown that an infinite sequence of double pulses can be constructed near the single pulse. Under the condition that the wave speed of a stable double pulse coincides with that of the single pulse, it is shown here that an infinite sequence of triple pulses can be constructed. These pulses have the form of the double pulse concatenated with a further single pulse far behind, and cannot be constructed in the same way for the situations considered by previous authors. Moreover, the pulses are shown to be alternately stable and unstable.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract. We describe recent developments and results of statistical learning theory. In the framework of learning from examples, two factors control generalization ability: explaining the training data by a learning machine of a suitable complexity. We describe kernel algorithms in feature spaces as elegant and efficient methods of realizing such machines. Examples thereof are Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Kernel PCA (Principal Component Analysis). More important than any individual example of a kernel algorithm, however, is the insight that any algorithm that can be cast in terms of dot products can be generalized to a nonlinear setting using kernels. Finally, we illustrate the significance of kernel algorithms by briefly describing industrial and academic applications, including ones where we obtained benchmark record results.
Notes: Zusammenfassung.

Notes: Abstract  Cytotoxic T lymphocytes play a predominant role in allograft rejection. They mediate this process through recognition of foreign major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I surface molecules encoded at the H2 locus. Embryonal carcinoma cells, the undifferentiated, neoplastic derivatives of primordial germ cells, typically lack detectable MHC class I gene expression. Despite this, embryonal carcinoma cells are subject to allograft rejection in several different mouse strains. In many instances, the H2 locus appears to be genetically linked to resistance. However, rejection of allografts of the F9 embryonal carcinoma cell line, a nullipotent cell line derived from the 129 mouse strain, does not appear to be H2-linked. Resistance to F9 tumor formation in the C57BL/6 mouse strain has been attributed to a single, unidentified locus termed Gt(B6). To genetically map the Gt(B6) locus, a total of 463 (C57BL/6×129)F2 mice were challenged with F9 cells, and 78 tumor-resistant mice were identified. Markers encompassing two candidate regions, the H2 locus on Chromosome (Chr) 17 and a second candidate locus on Chr 2, showed no indication of linkage to the resistance phenotype. Instead, results of a genome wide scan implicated mouse Chr 8, and evidence is presented demonstrating that the Gt(B6) locus maps to a region of less than 10 cM on the medial portion of Chr 8.
