    Notes: Electron microscopy shows that textured Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductors contain many partial dislocations associated with stacking faults in a-b planes. Two types of partial dislocations parallel to the [100] and [010] direction have been identified with Burgers vectors [a/2, 0, c/6] and [0, −b/2, c/6], respectively, which are the same as the displacement vectors of the associated stacking faults.

    Notes: The effect of size and dimensionality on the magnetic moments of Fe, Co, and Ni have been studied theoretically by confining the atoms to various structural forms such as chains, surfaces, and thin films. The size of these systems is controlled by limiting the number of atoms. A new first-principles theory is developed that enables us to study the electron spin density of states and moments of atoms in clusters containing two to a few thousand atoms. The theory is based upon the elementary principles governing the tight binding and linear combination of atomic orbitals formulations. It contains no adjustable parameters and can be applied to systems with or without topological symmetry. We have discovered quantum size effects on the magnetic moments of linear chains and these effects disappear when the chains contain more than 20 atoms. We have also found distinct effects of the local environment on the magnetic moment. For example, the moments increase with decreasing coordination number and increasing interatomic distance. Our results will be compared with available experimental and theoretical results.

    Notes: We investigate the quasistatic magnetic hysteresis of ferromagnetic thin films grown on a vicinal substrate, using Monte Carlo simulations within a two-dimensional XY model. Intrinsic in-plane anisotropy is assigned to surface sites according to their local symmetry. The simulated hysteresis loops show a strong anisotropy: the coercive field is the largest when the external field is along the step direction and vanishes when the external field is perpendicular to the step direction. In general, the coercivity increases with increasing step density, but displays a more complex dependence on film thickness. The simulations also suggest that the mechanism for the magnetization reversal is coherent rotation. These results are in good agreement with experiments. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Molecular beam epitaxy has been used for growing InGaAs self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) in InAlAs on an InP(001) substrate. Nominal deposition of 9.6 monolayers of In0.9Ga0.1As results in QDs of ∼6.5 nm high with an areal density of 3.3×1011 cm−2. Conspicuous bimodal size distribution is identified, and is responsible for the observed QDs photoluminescence (PL) emission with two peaks at 0.627 and 0.657 eV. Good agreement is achieved between the observed PL peak energies and calculated results.© 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Picosecond hole dynamics in GaAs grown on silicon substrate are reported for the first time using time- and energy-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. The emission spectrum is attributed to transitions from electrons in donor (Si, 1016 cm−3) states to the internal stress separated heavy hole and light hole bands [(D°→hh), (D°→lh)]. The intraband thermalization process for heavy holes is observed to be faster than for light holes. The intervalence-band thermalization time of holes is found to be about 11 ps. The hole cooling rate is measured to be six times smaller than expected based on hole scatterings with longitudinal optical phonons.

    Notes: Visible photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectra of Ge clusters embedded in porous silicon (PS) have been studied. The as-prepared sample shows redshifted and enhanced room temperature PL relative to reference PS. This result can be explained by the quantum confinement effect on excitons in Ge clusters and tunnel of excitons from Si units of the PS skeleton to Ge clusters. One year storage in dry air results in a pronounced decrease in PL intensity but blue-shifted in contrast to reference PS. This phenomenon correlates to the size decrease of macerated Ge clusters and occurrence of "quantum depletion" in Ge clusters. Consequently, only excitons in Si units contribute to PL. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A novel mimetic enzyme immunoassay to determine α-1-fetoprotein (AFP) in solution was developed. Hemin, a horseradish peroxidase substitute, was used as a labelling reagent to catalyze the reaction of p-hydroxyphenylacetic (HPA) and hydrogen peroxide in alkaline media. In the competitive immunoassay, monoclonal anti-AFP antibody was coated on a 96-well plate (polystyrene) and a constant amount of hemin-labelled AFP and a known volume of test solution were added. Non-labelled and hemin-labelled AFP compete for binding to the plate-bound antibody. After the immunoreaction, the immunochemically adsorbed hemin-AFP conjugate moiety was determined by measuring the fluorescence produced in a solution containing HPA and hydrogen peroxide. The calibration graph for AFP was linear over the range 0 ∼ 380 ng/ well with a detection limit of 1.0 ng/well. The method has been applied to determine the AFP in human blood serum with satisfactory results.

    Notes: Abstract. The dynamic features of interspike interval sequences and structures of spatiotemporal patterns of firing in a coupled noisy neural network are investigated. The system displays complex dynamics under periodic external stimuli. The dynamics is modulated by a periodic impulse-like synaptic current which relates to a global coupling interaction between neurons. The firings of the stimulated neurons are phase-locked to this current. In addition, the interspike interval histograms are studied for the case of frozen noise which does not change its value within a time interval once it has been distributed onto the network. It is found that the peaks in these histograms are located at integer multiples of the period of the external stimulus, and the heights of these peaks decay exponentially, which corresponds to the experimental results.
