Koshelets, Huabing Wang, and Peiheng Wu Detection and imaging using light at terahertz frequencies continues to be a topic of keen interest for numerous applications. Recent investigations have shown that stacks of natural Josephson junctions in cuprate superconductors are suitable emitters of THz radiation; now our attention turns to effective use of such a source. Using two setups, one featuring bolometric detection and the other heterodyne, the authors achieve results respectively comparable to those for time-domain spectroscopy and systems based on quantum cascade lasers. These findings indicate that their setups are in fact suitable for gas sensing in environmental monitoring. [Phys. Rev. Applied 8, 054005] Published Fri Nov 03, 2017
