Notes: [Auszug] RECENTLY we have shown that the absorption spectrum of non-luminous thallium vapour exhibits lines corresponding to the sharp and the diffuse series, and that 1π2 is the ground orbit of the valence electron in the atom of this element. A further confirmation of this view is given by ...

Notes: [Auszug] FOLLOWING the work of one of the authors on regularities in the spark spectrum of tin (Sn III, Proc. Phy. Soc., 39, 161; 1927; and Sn IV, in the course of publication), the spectrum of the element in the singly-ionised stage (Sn II) has been investigated. According to the theory of ...

Notes: [Auszug] CONTINUING our previous work on the absorption of light by bismuth vapour, we have found that the vapour exhibits, at a temperature of about 1300°C., an absorption spectrum composed of a very great number of bands presenting a fine structure, and extending from λ6500 to λ4500. We have ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN the course of our experiments on the absorption of light by vapours of different metals, we have recently photographed the absorption spectra of lead, bismuth, antimony, thallium, and magnesium with the following results: (1) The absorption spectrum of lead shows at noo° C, besides the ...

Notes: [Auszug] As a result of careful experiments conducted by Messrs. G. Subrahmaniam and D. Gunnaiya, it has been found that the behaviour of underblown pipes presents many features of remarkable interest. The following is a brief account of the results obtained with four wooden pipes ranging over an octave ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE second spark spectrum of lead was recently analysed by K. R. Rao and ourselves; and a preliminary report of the series regularities discovered was published in a paper (Ind. J. Phy., vol. 2, pt. 4, pp. 468–476.) We have since become aware of a similar publication by Smith (Proc. N. A. S., ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE deepest term of the separation of doubly ionised arsenic (As III) is 4p 2P1. The values of these doublet terms relative to 2G were reported in a recent paper (Ind. J. Phy., 5, 3, p. 3) to be 220, 221 cm.−1. It was found in the course ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE quantum theory of line spectra developed by Bohr has been most successful in explaining the spectrum of hydrogen and helium, and by a further hypothesis the spectra of the alkali metals. By asserting that elliptic orbits are possible, as well as circular orbits, Sommerfeld succeeded in ...
