Notes: Single-time Lagrangians are treated in this paper, describing the dynamics of systems of point particles, which are given as formal power series in some ordering parameter and which may contain higher time derivatives in all terms but the leading one. An efficient method for eliminating the higher time derivatives directly on the Lagrangian level is presented. This method clarifies the meaning of using the lower-order equations of motion in higher-order terms in a Lagrangian. The method consists of an iterative use of "contact'' transformations in the jet prolongation of the extended configurations space and is called "the method of redefinition of position variables.'' Several examples from electrodynamics and relativistic gravity are treated explicitly.

Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.

Notes: Abstract A central problem in a real case remediation of an oil contaminated site is the knowledge of the volume and the extent of the pollution. As the estimation of the mass balance, usually based on some point measurements, presents a large range of uncertainty, controlled experisites constitute essential research tools. The objective of SCERES (Controlled Experimental Site for Water and Soil Remediation Research) is to test techniques for both pollution quantification and in situ remediation of light non–aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) contaminated aquifers and soils. This paper reports results of experiments conducted on the experimental site SCERES and describes two techniques of surfactant flushing for the recovery of trapped diesel oil: an infiltration from the soil surface for the vadoze zone treatment and injections in depth for the capillary fringe treatment. Despite a satisfying mass balance, we underline some complex phenomena which influence the flow of fluids such as surfactants and mobilized oil in saturated and unsaturated porous media, in particular, the effect of surfactant agglomeration on oil removal efficiency. This research work also highlights some problems especially those linked with the confinement of the heterogeneous oil impregnation body.

Notes: Abstract The ADM Hamiltonian for a many-particle system is calculated up to the postlinear approximation, i.e., to the approximation that both the equations of motion for the particles and the equations of motion for the gravitational field in case of no-incoming radiation correctly result up to the postlinear approximation. The relation of this Hamiltonian to the ADM Hamiltonian obtained by a post-Newtonian approximation scheme which was applied up to the first radiation-reaction and radiation levels is discussed. From here the standard formulas for the mechanical angular momentum and energy losses as well as the radiated energy and angular momentum are deduced. Background logarithmic and logarithmic radiative terms are shown to be not present at our approximation if the condition of no-incoming radiation is fulfilled.

Notes: Abstract We study the effect of an infinitesimal coordinate transformation on the Lagrangian and on the metric functional of a system ofn point masses. We show how to compute the Lagrangians ofn point masses at the second postNewtonian approximation of general relativity in different coordinate systems. The Lagrangians are shown to depend on the accelerations except in a special class of coordinates. This class includes the coordinates associated with the canonical formalism of Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner, but excludes most other coordinate systems used in the literature (notably the harmonic one).
