    Description: New observations of the quiet-time energy spectrum of 0.16- to 2-MeV electrons have been made with the Caltech Electron/Isotope Spectrometer which was launched on IMP-7 in September 1972. Earlier measurements of quiet-time electrons in this energy range by other groups have resulted in spectra differing by more than an order of magnitude in intensity. A minimum quiet-time flux level somewhat lower than the lowest previously reported spectra and consistent with an extrapolation of the spectrum measured at higher energies is found. A galactic secondary source of knock-on electrons is consistent with these results and with independent studies of the interstellar spectra of cosmic-ray nuclei, provided that solar modulation does not suppress the 0.16- to 2-MeV electron flux by more than a factor of about 3. Although not required, other recently suggested sources may also contribute to the observed fluxes.

    Description: The isotopic composition of hydrogen and helium in solar cosmic rays provides a means of studying solar flare particle acceleration mechanisms since the enhanced relative abundance of rare isotopes, such as H-2, H-3, and He-3, is due to their production by inelastic nuclear collisions in the solar atmosphere during the flare. Electron isotope spectrometer on an IMP spacecraft was used to measure this isotopic composition. The response of the dE/dx-E particle telescope is discussed, and alpha particle channeling in thin detectors is identified as an important background source affecting measurement of low values of (He-3/He-4). The flare-averaged results obtained for the period October, 1972 November, 1973 are given.

    Description: Derivation of new upper limits to the flux of solar-flare positrons in the energy range from 0.2 to 2 MeV. The observations were made during four solar-particle events in late 1972, with the Caltech Electron/Isotope Spectrometer on IMP-7. The 0.2- to 2-MeV positron flux is compared directly to the solar-flare electron (0.2 to 2 MeV) and proton (1.2 to 27.5 MeV) fluxes measured in the same detector system. Summing over four solar events, it is found that e+/(e+ + e-) is less than .006. Calculated fluxes of solar-flare positrons for these four events are well below the obtained upper limits.

    Description: Simultaneous observations of the quiet-time interplanetary positron and electron spectra between 0.16 and 1.6 MeV are reported. The measurements were made in selected time intervals between October 1, 1972 and February 1, 1973 with the Caltech Electron/Isotope Spectrometer on the IMP-7 satellite. The detector system consists of a stack of 11 silicon surface-barrier detectors surrounded by a plastic scintillator anti-coincidence cup. The method of e+ identification and possible background effects are discussed and upper limits to the 0.16 to 1.6 MeV quiet-time positron flux are reported. During this period positrons amounted to less than 20% of the total 0.16 to 1.6 MeV electron flux.

A galactic secondary source of knock-on electrons is consistent with these results, provided that there is negligible solar modulation. Although not required, other recently suggested sources may also contribute to the observed fluxes.

    Description: Results of a new quiet-time measurement of the relative abundance of cosmic-ray H-2 and He-4. The observations were made in selected time intervals between September 1972 and February 1973 with the Caltech Electron/Isotope Spectrometer on IMP-7. In the energy interval from 13 to 29 MeV/nucleon, an upper limit to the H-2 to He-4 ratio of less than 0.06 is found. This new upper limit is significantly lower than finite H-2/He-4 ratios measured in earlier years by other workers. Possible implications of this new result are discussed.
